Paralives Laggy or Slow? Best Fixes for Better FPS

Paralives launched in Early Access on May 25, 2026, and players across the globe are already running into a frustrating problem: the game stutters, lags, and drops frames even on high-end hardware. If you are dealing with choppy performance, you are far from alone. Here is everything you need to know to get Paralives running better on your PC right now.

Paralives Slow Performance: Is This a Known Issue?

Yes, and it is widespread. Players on Reddit and Steam have reported persistent stuttering on rigs ranging from mid-range laptops to flagship builds packing RTX 5080s, RTX 5090s, and Ryzen 7 9800X3D processors. Several users noted their GPU and CPU usage sitting below 50% while the game still stuttered, which points to the game not fully utilising available hardware resources.

One Steam user with an i9 13900K and RTX 4080 confirmed the same lag on two separate high-end machines, making it clear this is a game-side optimisation issue, not a hardware problem on your end.

Performance improvements are listed as a top priority on the Paralives development roadmap, so patches are expected. Until then, the fixes below are your best bet.

Then, Why Is Paralives Lagging?

Before jumping into fixes, it helps to understand what is actually causing the problem. Based on community reports and the nature of the Unity engine, the main culprits are:

  • Poor CPU thread utilisation (the game appears to run on very few threads)
  • Potential memory leaks causing performance to worsen the longer you play
  • Open-world simulation load since Paralives simulates everything at once rather than using instancing like The Sims 4
  • Unoptimised Early Access build that has not yet been tested across a wide enough range of hardware

Fixes to Try Right Now

1. Adjust the Frame Rate Cap

By default, Paralives applies a frame rate cap that may be too low or mismatched for your setup. Go into the display settings and either raise the cap to match your monitor’s refresh rate or set it to unlimited. Note that you may need to fully close and relaunch the game for this setting to take effect.

However, on laptops or older hardware, leaving the frame rate completely uncapped can cause your CPU to overheat and throttle itself down. In that case, capping at 60 FPS gives your system breathing room and produces more consistent frame pacing.

2. Turn Off Vertical Sync

Multiple community members reported noticeably smoother gameplay after turning off V-Sync entirely. It is one of the first settings worth toggling, particularly if your frame rate feels artificially limited or the game feels sluggish to respond to camera movements.

3. Lower Object Rendering Distance

Setting Object Rendering Distance to Medium is one of the most effective individual tweaks available right now. While it does not dramatically increase your raw FPS, it significantly reduces the frequency of stutters, which makes gameplay feel far more fluid. Several players confirmed this helped even when other settings changes made little difference.

4. Reduce Shadow Quality and Reflections

Shadows and real-time reflections are among the most GPU-intensive settings in Paralives. Dropping Shadow Quality to Low and turning Reflections down to Medium or Low reduces the rendering load without making the game look dramatically worse, since Paralives uses a stylised art style rather than hyper-realistic visuals.

5. Lower Resolution Scale

Dropping your resolution scale to around 80 to 90% of your native resolution can produce a meaningful framerate improvement. Because the game’s art direction is clean and pastel-toned, the slight reduction in sharpness is far less noticeable than it would be in a photorealistic title.

6. Close Background Applications

Discord, Chrome, and other background apps consume a significant amount of RAM. With early access games that already have unoptimised memory management, this compounds the problem quickly. Closing unnecessary programs before launching Paralives frees up RAM and reduces the chance of hitching when the game loads new textures or assets.

7. Set Your PC to Performance Mode

If you are on a laptop, your device may be limiting CPU and GPU output to save battery. You can fix this by heading to Settings, then System, then Power and Battery, and switching Power Mode to Best Performance. Keep in mind this will drain your battery faster, so staying plugged in is recommended.

8. Verify Integrity of Game Files on Steam

Corrupted or incomplete game files can cause stuttering that looks identical to optimisation issues. To rule this out, right-click Paralives in your Steam Library, select Properties, head to the Installed Files tab, and click Verify Integrity of Game Files. Steam will identify and replace any damaged files automatically.

9. Restart the Game Every Few Hours

Several players noted that performance degrades progressively the longer the game runs, which is consistent with a memory leak in the current build. Saving your game and restarting the client every two to three hours clears out accumulated memory usage and restores smoother performance.

10. Try Forcing DirectX 11 via Launch Options

Since Paralives runs on Unity, you can attempt to force a specific rendering API. Right-click Paralives in your Steam Library, select Properties, and in the Launch Options field, type -force-d3d11. This can resolve draw call bottlenecks in some Unity simulation games and reduce micro-stutters when panning the camera.

What About Mac?

A small number of players on older Intel-based Macs have reported the game being largely unplayable. Players using newer Apple Silicon machines like the M3 chip have reported significantly better results. If you are on an older Mac, the current recommendation is to wait for further optimisation patches.

Will This Get Fixed?

Almost certainly, yes. The Paralives development team has acknowledged performance as a top priority on the Early Access roadmap. Now that the game is publicly available, the team has access to a much broader range of hardware data than was possible during development, which should speed up targeted optimisation work.
