The Kunai is one of the most versatile tools in Ghost of Yōtei: a quickfire weapon that perfectly balances stealth and aggression. Whether you’re interrupting a charging samurai or quietly thinning out enemies before a duel, the Kunai proves invaluable throughout Atsu’s vengeful journey across Yōtei’s mist-veiled lands.

But unlocking it isn’t as simple as finding it on the road. You’ll need to complete a specific questline tied to Hana the Kunai Artisan, a skilled craftswoman whose story is woven into the fate of Teshio Ridge. Here’s how to get your hands on this essential weapon.

Follow these steps to unlock the Kunai in Ghost of Yōtei:

1. Begin “The Kitsune” Questline

To start your journey toward obtaining the Kunai, initiate “The Kitsune” questline — one of the earliest narrative branches available after the first act.

This storyline introduces the Nine Tails, a rogue shinobi clan known for their ambushes and cunning traps. Completing its early segments unlocks access to the Teshio Ridge region and leads directly into your next key quest.

2. Progress Through “The Winter Farms”

Once Teshio Ridge becomes accessible, look for a quest marker labeled “The Winter Farms.”

You’ll find it near Hana’s Farm, located southeast of Red Crane Inn or northwest along the frozen farmlands. When you arrive, you’ll encounter a grim scene — a lifeless body lying outside the farmhouse.

Investigate the body to trigger a scripted ambush by Nine Tails assassins. This intense skirmish serves as your initiation into one of the game’s most critical side narratives.

3. Defend Hana’s Farm

After defeating the ambushing shinobi, a cutscene introduces Hana, a reclusive artisan skilled in crafting throwing blades. She’ll commend your reflexes and invite you to train in the art of the Kunai.

During this segment, Hana teaches you:

  • Proper aiming and release timing for the Kunai
  • How to interrupt enemy combos mid-swing
  • Efficient usage in stealth and multi-target encounters

Once you complete her brief training sequence, she gifts you your first set of Kunai — officially adding them to Atsu’s Quickfire arsenal.

How to Upgrade and Replenish Kunai?

After completing The Winter Farms quest, Hana remains available as a permanent Kunai Artisan Merchant at her farm. You can return to her anytime to:

  • Replenish Kunai (free after unlocking)
  • Upgrade damage and capacity using Iron, Bamboo, and Ryo
  • Unlock advanced throwing techniques, allowing double or triple strikes in later upgrades

Tip: Prioritize the Quick Reload and Stagger Duration upgrades early — they make higher-level duels considerably easier.

What Makes the Kunai Special?

The Kunai is not just a tool for stealth players — it’s a lifesaver in heated combat.
A single well-timed throw can stagger heavily armored foes, interrupt Oni-class enemies, or create an opening for lethal counters.

It’s especially useful when:

  • Facing multiple attackers
  • Dealing with fast or evasive shinobi
  • Trying to maintain stealth without resorting to loud kills

With Hana’s upgrades, the Kunai can evolve from a utility weapon into one of Atsu’s most lethal and strategic tools.
