Black and white cinematic art for the Onryo Armor upgrade, featuring a samurai warrior and a spectral wolf, with the text "ONRYŌ ARMOR UPGRADED" and "WOLF'S CALL IMPROVED."

In Ghost of Yotei, the Onryo Armor is more than a defensive layer; it’s a symbol of Atsu’s grief and vengeance. From the moment she walks away from the ashes of her village, this spectral armor becomes a reflection of her will, evolving as her story — and fury — deepens.

Unlike other armor sets that rely on merchants, dyes, or crafting resources, the Onryo Armor’s upgrades are earned through narrative progress, echoing the spirit of the game’s design: every scar, every victory, and every fallen foe adds to Atsu’s legacy.

How to Upgrade the Onryo Armor

To upgrade the Onryo Armor, you must follow the Gold Ginkgo Leaf, a poetic phrase the game uses to signify your progress through the Main Tales of Ghost of Yotei.

Each completed Main Tale that involves one of the Yotei Six upgrades the armor to the next tier automatically — no resources, merchants, or blueprints required. These quests are marked by golden ginkgo leaves on your map, signifying fated encounters that push Atsu closer to her destiny.

Main Tales required to upgrade the Onryo Armor:

  • Saito
  • The Oni
  • The Kitsune
  • The Saito Brothers

You can face the Yotei Six in any order. Each completed Main Tale triggers a visual and functional transformation of the armor, symbolizing Atsu’s spiritual growth and the manifestation of her vengeance.

What “Follow the Gold Ginkgo Leaf” Really Means?

When inspecting the Onryo Armor, you’ll see the cryptic note: “Follow the Gold Ginkgo Leaf.”

In Ghost of Yotei’s world, this is not a metaphor — it’s a literal quest marker system. Gold Ginkgo Leaves are icons used to denote main storyline missions, separating them from side quests and bounties.

Each time you complete a tale marked with these golden leaves, Atsu’s bond with the spiritual realm strengthens, and the Onryo Armor ascends to its next form.

Onryo Armor Overview

TypeBody Armor
DescriptionThe garb of a hunter haunted by vengeance. Said to blur the line between the living and the dead.
PerksSpirit-based fear mechanics, enhanced wolf summon synergy, increased damage against terrified foes.
Lore NoteThe name “Onryo” draws from Japanese folklore — vengeful spirits that return from death to exact justice. The armor mirrors Atsu’s descent into that mythos, merging her humanity with ghostly wrath.

Cosmetic Evolution

Each upgrade stage of the Onryo Armor doesn’t just alter stats — it visually tells Atsu’s story.

  • Base Form: Worn yellow kimono with faint spirit etching.
  • Tier II: Armor plates gain faint white veining resembling ginkgo roots.
  • Tier III: A blue spectral aura shimmers when standing near fallen foes.
  • Tier IV: The fur collar becomes snow-streaked; the mask gains a faint oni grin.
  • Tier V: Ethereal wolf markings glow on her shoulders under moonlight.

These aesthetic transitions are subtle but haunting, reinforcing Ghost of Yotei’s visual storytelling where every piece of gear breathes narrative intent.

Tips for Players

  • Don’t Rush the Tales: Since upgrades are tied to the Yotei Six, pacing your progression lets you experience the emotional weight of each battle and appreciate each armor evolution.
  • Use Spirit Attacks Wisely: To trigger the Onryo perks effectively, build your combat rhythm around Spirit Attacks and thrown weapons — these maximize fear effects and wolf summons.
  • Pair with Charms: Equip charms that boost Spirit Attack recovery or Wolf duration to complement the Onryo set’s synergy.
