On October 2, 2025, Ghost of Yōtei launched, introducing Atsu, a fierce and multifaceted new protagonist. Taking on the role is Erika Ishii, the acclaimed voice actor and performer known for characters like Valkyrie in Apex Legends and Rook in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, as well as their appearances in actual-play web series such as Dimension 20 and L.A. by Night.
For Ishii, stepping into the Ghost legacy was deeply personal. “I’ve never played a character that has my face and moves like me,” they shared in an interview with GamerBraves. “She’s close to my heart in a way no other role has been.” Atsu starts as the vengeful Onryō but gradually transforms into a layered character defined by both rage and humanity: a duality Ishii relished bringing to life.
Crafting Atsu’s Persona
While Ishii’s preparation for Atsu involved only brief immersion in the character’s journey, their lifelong love of samurai cinema and storytelling informed their portrayal. “I grew up with Kurosawa films, jidaigeki, and Samurai Champloo,” they explained. Atsu’s bold style, dual katanas, and unorthodox fighting reflect this blend of traditional inspiration and modern energy. Ishii’s goal was to ensure Atsu felt authentic, dynamic, and emotionally resonant, rather than just a successor to Jin Sakai.
A Career of Representation and Versatility
Ishii has spent decades building a career centered on authenticity and representation. Openly queer, bisexual, and genderfluid, they have advocated for LGBTQ+ visibility in games and media, winning “Best LGBTQ+ Voice Actor of the Year” at the 2025 Gayming Awards. Their performances, whether in video games, tabletop series, or stage productions, consistently emphasize the humanity within fantastical roles. As Ishii told Happy Mag, storytelling allows them to explore different facets of identity safely and creatively, bringing depth to every character they portray.
The Legacy of Atsu
With Atsu, Ishii doesn’t just voice a new protagonist—they embody a hero who is both vulnerable and powerful, chaotic yet deeply human. Fans are encouraged to explore Atsu’s journey at their own pace, discovering the layers of emotion Ishii has helped craft. Through Atsu, Erika Ishii proves that carrying a legacy isn’t about imitation—it’s about creating something unforgettable in their own voice.
