The Epic Box is the final and most complex of the Nine Tails Puzzle Boxes in Ghost of Yotei. Hidden deep within Teshio Ridge, it waits beneath a quiet Kitsune Altar, its lacquered wood and metal edges whispering secrets of the past. Solving it is less about speed and more about rhythm, a small dance of logic and patience that rewards you with the War Cry Mask, one of the most striking vanity pieces in the game.

Where to Find the Epic Box

The Epic Box can be found in Teshio Ridge, often resting at a Kitsune Altar or tucked away inside a Fox Hideout.
Most players discover it after completing the other eleven Nine Tails Boxes scattered across Yotei Six Camps and Kitsune Shrines.

From Shipwreck Shoal, ride north along the ridge until the land curls into a narrow path beneath the cliffs. Look to your west — a faint shimmer marks a Kitsune Altar, surrounded by pale maple leaves. That’s where the Epic Box rests, waiting for careful hands to open it.

This is the twelfth and final puzzle box, and it demands that you work across all four sides. Here’s how to open it step-by-step:

  1. Begin with the back side of the box. Slide the top, bottom, and left black bars slightly outward. This releases the tension inside the mechanism.
  2. Stay on the back and move the horizontal bar to the left.
  3. Turn the box right, and on this new side, slide the horizontal bar left again.
  4. Return to the front. Move the left segment of the horizontal bar left, then slide the vertical bar down a notch. Bring the left segment back to its center.
  5. On the left side, restore the horizontal bar to its neutral position.
  6. Go back to the rear and push the horizontal bar fully right.
  7. On the right side, move the horizontal bar all the way right once more.
  8. Finally, face the front side again. Move the right part of the horizontal bar to the right, then push the vertical bar down to unlock the mechanism.

If done correctly, the box clicks softly open — the War Cry Mask resting within.

The mask symbolizes triumph over all Nine Tails Boxes — a token of patience, skill, and focus. Completing it also contributes toward the “Trickster Fox” Trophy, celebrating mastery of Yotei’s most intricate puzzles.

Pro Tip for Puzzle Solvers

If you’ve grown familiar with the movement of smaller puzzle boxes, the Epic Box will feel like a culmination of all those lessons. Watch how each movement frees the next, like ripples in calm water. Use the adaptive triggers on your DualSense to feel the slight resistance when the bar is correctly aligned — it’s a subtle but vital cue.
