Every battle in Digimon Story: Time Stranger rests upon the delicate balance of attributes—Vaccine conquers Virus, Virus overcomes Data, and Data triumphs over Vaccine. Yet, in this well-defined loop lies a rare ability that defies the natural order of combat: Character Reversal.

Unlike brute-force attacks or flashy ultimate moves, Character Reversal is a thinking player’s weapon—one that bends the entire attribute triangle in your favor. Whether you seek to turn the tide of a losing battle or amplify the strengths of your monotype team, mastering this attachment skill is the key to transforming weakness into strategy.

What Is Character Reversal?

Character Reversal is an Attachment Skill that manipulates how type advantages function in battle. When activated, it flips every existing relationship in the game’s attribute system. A Vaccine Digimon that once dominated Virus types now becomes vulnerable to them. A Virus Digimon, usually weak against Data, suddenly resists it.

This inversion doesn’t stop with type matchups—it also affects elemental resistances. Fire resistance becomes Fire weakness, and Ice weakness turns into Ice resistance. The outcome is often unpredictable yet deeply strategic, creating fresh opportunities for players who plan ahead.

To visualize it simply:

  • Before Reversal: Vaccine > Virus > Data > Vaccine
  • After Reversal: Vaccine < Virus < Data < Vaccine

This fundamental change forces both players and AI opponents to rethink every move.

How to Obtain Character Reversal

Character Reversal becomes available fairly early in the game during the main mission “A Promise on a Scarf.” Once unlocked, it can be purchased as a Skill Disc from various vendors or extracted from Digimon that already know it.

Some Digimon naturally learn this skill at specific levels, giving you an early tactical advantage.

If you prefer a head start, Andromon or Pumpkinmon are excellent early choices, learning Character Reversal by Level 20.

Equipping and Using Character Reversal

1. Acquire the Skill:
Gain it naturally through level-up, purchase it as a Skill Disc, or unequip it from another Digimon who already knows it.

2. Access the Skill Menu:
From your main menu or while exploring, open your Digimon’s status screen and choose Attachment Skills.

3. Attach the Skill:
Select an open slot and equip Character Reversal. Remember that skill slots are limited, so assign it carefully to the Digimon that benefits most.

4. Deploy in Battle:
Timing matters. Activate Character Reversal right before engaging opponents with type advantage over your team. For instance, when using an all-Virus squad against Data bosses, applying Reverse to your own Digimon changes them into Vaccine-type equivalents, instantly turning the tables.

5. Plan for Permanence:
Once applied, the Reversal effect persists throughout the battle. It cannot be undone until combat ends, so commit to your plan before casting.

Why Character Reversal Is Significant?

1. Universally Effective:
Unlike many debuffs that bosses resist, Character Reversal penetrates nearly all forms of immunity. It works even in late-game boss fights, making it one of the few reliable control skills available from start to finish.

2. A Savior for Monotype Teams:
For players who enjoy building themed squads—like an all-Virus or all-Vaccine lineup—this skill is transformative. Without it, single-type teams struggle against specific bosses. With Character Reversal, they become flexible and viable for the entire campaign.

3. Early Accessibility, Lasting Power:
You can unlock this skill within your first few hours, yet its relevance extends through post-game challenges. Its utility doesn’t fade, ensuring you always have a countermeasure ready.

Advanced Strategies

• The “Tentachimon Lead” Setup:
Start a battle with a Digimon that learns Character Reversal early, such as Tentomon or its evolutions. Cast Reverse on the opponent to flip its weaknesses, then swap to your main attackers for an immediate advantage.

• Defensive Reversal:
Apply the skill to your own Digimon to flip weaknesses into resistances. This trick works beautifully against high-damage elemental bosses—especially when combined with armor or abilities that manipulate resistances.

• Countering Vademon:
In the Vademon boss battle, the enemy frequently uses Character Reversal itself. To adapt, include Digimon of varied types in your lineup. Type diversity ensures that even after multiple reversals, you maintain a source of effective damage.

Best Practices and Common Pitfalls

  • Always test Reversal in minor encounters before major fights. The effect can backfire if your elemental setup isn’t aligned.
  • Avoid stacking skills that reduce elemental resistance while using Reverse, as they may unintentionally increase it.
  • Remember: Reversal cannot be toggled mid-battle. Plan your order of moves before applying it.

Character Reversal as a Strategic Core

Character Reversal isn’t simply another tool in the combat system—it’s the ultimate equalizer. By inverting the foundational rules of Digimon attributes, it allows creative players to reshape battles on their terms. Whether you wield it to save your Virus-type favorites or exploit it against relentless endgame bosses, its versatility remains unmatched.

If there is one attachment skill every tamer should master in Digimon Story: Time Stranger, it’s this one. In a world where every fight is a loop of strength and weakness, Character Reversal teaches you that true mastery isn’t about power—it’s about perspective.
