Minecraft Is Finally Getting Its Native Switch 2 Upgrade

If you’ve been waiting to see what Minecraft can really look like on Nintendo’s newest hardware, the wait is almost over. Mojang Studios has officially confirmed that Minecraft is launching as a native Nintendo Switch 2 release on October 27, 2026. This isn’t simply the original Switch version running through backward compatibility. The new edition is specifically optimized for Nintendo’s latest console and comes with improved visuals, performance enhancements, and support for Mojang’s Vibrant Visuals upgrade.

And honestly, this could be a pretty big visual jump for Minecraft fans playing on Nintendo hardware.

The original Nintendo Switch version will still work on Switch 2 through backward compatibility, so nobody is being forced to move over to the native edition. But if you want the upgraded experience, the Switch 2 version is bringing enhanced lighting, improved shadows, atmospheric effects, reflective water, and other visual improvements that should make Minecraft’s familiar blocky worlds feel much more alive.

The biggest headline feature is easily Vibrant Visuals, which Mojang describes as its largest official visual overhaul for Minecraft so far. Originally introduced for select Bedrock Edition platforms in 2025, Vibrant Visuals improves Minecraft’s presentation without throwing away the iconic visual identity that makes the game instantly recognizable.

That means you’re still getting the Minecraft you know, just with considerably more atmosphere.

Vibrant Visuals adds enhanced directional lighting, improved shadow rendering, volumetric fog, reflective water effects, and additional atmospheric lighting improvements. These upgrades can make everything from exploring forests and caves to simply watching the sun move across your world feel more dramatic.

Even better, Vibrant Visuals will be enabled by default on the native Nintendo Switch 2 version. That gives the new release an immediate visual advantage over the original Switch edition, which does not support Vibrant Visuals.

The upgrade isn’t limited entirely to Minecraft’s standard environments either. Mojang has confirmed that supported Minecraft Marketplace content can also take advantage of the improved lighting and visual effects. So compatible community-created worlds and other Marketplace creations can benefit from the Switch 2 visual overhaul as well.

And then there’s the Nintendo-exclusive content.

The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack is getting updated for Vibrant Visuals, giving Nintendo fans another reason to jump back into their Mario-themed Minecraft worlds. Players will be able to revisit iconic locations such as Peach’s Castle and Delfino Plaza with enhanced graphics, while still enjoying the pack’s Mario-themed skins and music.

That combination of Minecraft and Mario already has plenty of nostalgia attached to it. Now, those familiar locations can get a fresh visual treatment on Nintendo Switch 2.

There are a couple of catches, though. Mojang has confirmed that Vibrant Visuals will not be available in split-screen multiplayer. The feature may also be unavailable when players use certain Marketplace Worlds or other specific content.

So while the native Switch 2 version is clearly aiming to be the most visually impressive Nintendo version of Minecraft yet, the enhanced graphics won’t apply universally in every possible gameplay situation.

Your Worlds Are Coming With You, But There’s One Big Question

Now for the part longtime Nintendo Switch players will probably care about most: you won’t have to leave your existing Minecraft worlds behind.

Mojang has confirmed that existing worlds and save data can be transferred from the original Nintendo Switch edition to the native Nintendo Switch 2 version. That means years of building, exploring, surviving, experimenting, and probably getting completely lost underground can make the jump to the new edition.

For players who have spent countless hours creating massive bases or entire custom worlds, this is a seriously important feature. Nobody wants to upgrade their console only to discover that their favorite Minecraft world has been left behind.

Mojang has also confirmed a digital upgrade path for players who already own Minecraft on the original Nintendo Switch.

But there’s a pretty big mystery attached to that announcement.

Mojang has not yet revealed whether the Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade will be free or paid.

That is currently the biggest unanswered question surrounding the release. The studio has said that more information will be provided closer to launch, but for now, existing Switch owners are left waiting to find out exactly what the upgrade will cost, if anything.

That uncertainty is especially interesting because several enhanced Nintendo Switch 2 editions from Nintendo and third-party publishers have introduced paid upgrade options in recent months. Those upgrades have often fallen somewhere between $5 and $20.

However, Mojang has not said that Minecraft will follow that pricing model. At the same time, it hasn’t confirmed that the upgrade will be free either.

So, for now, players simply have to wait.

And if you decide that you don’t want to upgrade, that’s completely fine too. The original Nintendo Switch version of Minecraft will remain playable on Nintendo Switch 2 through backward compatibility. You’ll still be able to play the version you already own, but you won’t get the native release’s visual improvements and hardware-specific optimizations.

The Switch 2 edition itself has been rumored and anticipated for a while, so Mojang’s confirmation finally puts an end to months of speculation.

An ESRB rating for Minecraft on Nintendo Switch 2 appeared in June 2026, strongly suggesting that a native version was coming. Mojang has now officially confirmed the platform and launch date, with the game scheduled to arrive on October 27, 2026.

The release also fits into Mojang’s wider 2026 lineup. Another major Minecraft title, Minecraft Dungeons II, is already scheduled to launch on September 29, 2026, giving fans another reason to keep an eye on the franchise this fall.

For Nintendo players, though, the Switch 2 version of Minecraft could be the bigger deal.

You’re getting Vibrant Visuals enabled by default, enhanced lighting and shadows, volumetric fog, reflective water, improved atmospheric effects, supported Marketplace content upgrades, and a refreshed Super Mario Mash-Up Pack featuring enhanced locations such as Peach’s Castle and Delfino Plaza.

Speaking of Features: Cross-console compatibility keeps coming up across gaming right now. Our article on Is Big Walk Cross Platform? Crossplay Guide breaks down which platforms connect.

You can also transfer your existing worlds and saves, meaning your Minecraft adventure doesn’t have to start from zero.

The only major piece still missing from the puzzle is the price of the upgrade.

So, if you’re already playing Minecraft on the original Nintendo Switch, October 27 is definitely a date worth keeping on your calendar. The native Nintendo Switch 2 version is shaping up to be the most feature-rich version of Minecraft available on Nintendo hardware yet—and now we just need Mojang to answer the one question everyone is waiting on:

Will the upgrade be free, or are we paying for those upgraded blocks?
