An elevated overview render of CarMax Park stadium in Richmond transformed into the WinterWorld holiday festival, featuring a large ice-skating pond with skaters, a lit-up blue Ferris wheel, a towering Christmas tree, a multi-lane ice slide, a light maze, and vibrant blue and white holiday lights throughout the venue.

Richmond is preparing for a holiday season unlike anything the city has hosted before. What is usually home to baseball games will soon become a winter wonderland as 804Live unveils WinterWorld, a 39-day immersive holiday festival at CarMax Park. Backed by a multi-million-dollar investment and ambitious attendance goals, organizers hope the event will become a yearly tradition that attracts visitors from across Virginia and beyond.

The announcement, made on Wednesday, July 16, 2026 (with some reports dating it to July 15), revealed a project designed to turn the Richmond Flying Squirrels’ home stadium into a festive destination packed with attractions, entertainment, and community events.

Large-scale event announcements have kept popping up across the country this summer, including a major music festival confirming its return dates. The announcement took place during a news conference at CarMax Park, where Richmond Flying Squirrels owner and Navigators Baseball managing partner Lou DiBella arrived wearing a full Santa Claus suit and beard. He described WinterWorld as “a present to the fans” and said he hopes it becomes a new Christmas tradition for Richmond, drawing inspiration from New York City’s Rockefeller Center, where he once had an office.

The reveal also coincided with the team’s “Christmas in July” theme night.

How CarMax Park Will Be Turned Into a Massive Holiday Attraction

Creating WinterWorld will require removing and later replacing the baseball field as the stadium is transformed into an immersive holiday destination.

Visitors can expect more than one million holiday lights spread throughout the venue, along with a 13,000-square-foot ice skating pond, a six-lane, 100-foot ice slide, and a 60-foot Ferris wheel.

The attraction list also includes Richmond’s largest live Christmas tree, a Christmas tree maze, a snowball speed pitch experience, Santa’s workshop featuring visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus, a holiday retail village showcasing local small businesses, seasonal food and drinks, a dedicated 21-and-over lounge, private holiday party spaces, and performances from local schools, community groups, and entertainers.

A Year-Round Vision That Started Two Years Ago

According to organizers, the concept for WinterWorld began about two years ago while CarMax Park was still being planned.

The festival also represents the biggest non-baseball event yet for 804Live, the full-service events company launched in 2025 to make CarMax Park a year-round entertainment destination. Since the stadium opened in April 2026, it has already hosted more than 40 non-baseball events.

Led by President Chris Yancey, whose experience includes Big Apple Circus and Caesars Entertainment, 804Live oversees booking, production, and management of non-game-day events with capacities of up to 14,000 people.

Other cities have also turned to large-scale venue transformations for their own summer entertainment lineups, with Chicago hosting competing festivals side by side. Ticket Sales, Community Access and Construction Challenges Still Ahead

Ticket prices, themed programming, New Year’s Eve celebrations, and additional event details will be announced later during summer and fall 2026.

A presale is scheduled for August 2026, with public ticket sales expected to begin in September 2026. Organizers also plan to distribute 5,000 complimentary tickets through partnerships with area nonprofits.

While excitement around WinterWorld continues to build, preparations come amid ongoing concerns surrounding Diamond District construction. Roadwork and infrastructure projects near CarMax Park’s main entrance could affect event setup, with organizers targeting full accessibility by November 11.

DiBella’s group has raised those concerns in letters sent to the Richmond Economic Development Authority and city officials, stressing the importance of reliable access for both WinterWorld and the stadium’s broader year-round operations. At the time of the announcement, no city officials spoke during the event, and responses to those concerns were still pending.

Beyond the holiday attractions, WinterWorld represents a broader effort to strengthen community engagement, boost Richmond’s economy, and establish the city as a regional holiday destination for years to come.
