Chicago’s biggest summer celebration is officially underway, with two of the city’s most anticipated festivals running at the same time from Wednesday, July 8 through Sunday, July 12, 2026. While one festival celebrates the city’s world-famous culinary diversity with free admission, the other brings together award-winning barbecue, country music superstars and a premium festival experience.

Whether you’re planning a family outing, a food-focused weekend or a country music getaway, Taste of Chicago and Windy City Smokeout offer distinctly different experiences that together showcase why Chicago remains one of America’s premier summer festival destinations.

Now in its 46th annual edition, Taste of Chicago takes over Grant Park from July 8–12, 2026, welcoming visitors daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. (with some schedule variations). The festival stretches along Columbus Avenue from Balbo to Monroe and remains free to attend.

Recognized as the world’s largest food festival and Chicago’s biggest annual festival, Taste of Chicago celebrates the city’s diverse culinary identity through dozens of local restaurants, chefs, food trucks and specialty vendors. Visitors can sample everything from deep-dish pizza, Chicago-style hot dogs, Italian beef, ribs and ethnic specialties to Eli’s Cheesecake, reflecting the city’s rich food culture.

Beyond the food, the festival offers entertainment across multiple stages, including the Main Stage and Petrillo Music Shell. Opening night features performances from Beach Bunny and Friko, while additional live music, cultural performances, chef demonstrations, family activities, rides including a Ferris wheel, art displays and Eli’s Cheesecake birthday celebration keep visitors entertained throughout the five-day event.

Taste of Chicago 2026: A Festival Built on Decades of Tradition

The festival began in 1980 as a one-day event on Michigan Avenue, created by Arnie Morton and others after drawing inspiration from earlier food festivals such as Taste of Cincinnati. It later moved to Grant Park, expanded significantly and eventually became one of Chicago’s defining summer traditions after the gradual phase-out of ChicagoFest.

Over the years, attendance has reached millions, helping establish the event as a showcase of Chicago’s culinary diversity.

Visitors should expect large crowds, particularly around popular vendors, making an early arrival a smart choice. Payment is generally accepted through cash and credit cards, although some booths may only accept credit cards, so confirming payment options on-site is recommended. Daily entertainment schedules remain subject to change.

Running during the exact same dates, Windy City Smokeout returns for its 13th annual edition in the United Center parking lot.

Unlike Taste of Chicago, this is a ticketed festival requiring wristbands for entry. Produced by Lettuce Entertain You, the event has earned recognition as a two-time Academy of Country Music “Festival of the Year” winner by combining major country music performances with more than 20 pitmaster teams serving barbecue from across the United States.

After launching in 2013 as a small parking-lot gathering, the festival experienced rapid growth before relocating to the United Center area in 2019.

Although both festivals run simultaneously, they deliver completely different experiences.

Taste of Chicago focuses on free family entertainment, local cuisine, cultural performances and lakefront scenery, making it an accessible event for visitors of all ages.

Windy City Smokeout, meanwhile, caters to country music fans and barbecue enthusiasts looking for headline concerts, nationally recognized pitmasters, craft beer and a high-energy outdoor festival atmosphere.

Transportation, Weather and Visitor Tips

Grant Park offers convenient access through Chicago’s public transportation network, while the United Center provides dedicated parking around the venue. Heavy traffic is expected throughout the festival period, making CTA services, rideshares, walking or cycling practical alternatives.

With July bringing peak summer temperatures and the possibility of rain, visitors are encouraged to stay hydrated, prepare for sun exposure and monitor weather forecasts before heading out. City officials also encourage festivalgoers to remain aware of crowd safety guidance throughout the events.

For visitors hoping to experience both festivals, combining them into the same trip is possible with careful planning, although they take place in different parts of the city—Grant Park along the downtown lakefront and the United Center on Chicago’s West Side.

Together, these two events mark the beginning of Chicago’s busiest festival season, offering everything from iconic local flavours to championship barbecue and live country music across one unforgettable summer week.
