A routine grocery run in Des Moines, Iowa, took a seriously bizarre turn after a woman spotted a package of meat in a Hy-Vee freezer that appeared to show part of a scaled animal—with what looked like a claw still attached. The label made the discovery even stranger: “Unknown – New Scale Item.”

TikTok creator Tyleah Trotter, known online as @tyleahtrotter940, filmed the package and shared it with her followers, quickly turning one confusing supermarket find into a viral internet mystery. Millions watched as viewers tried to figure out exactly what kind of creature had ended up in the freezer. Eventually, Hy-Vee stepped in with an answer—but the explanation still left an important question about the label itself.

The Viral Hy-Vee ‘Unknown Meat’ Package That Had Everyone Guessing

Trotter’s video begins with a close-up of the unusual packaged meat. The item appeared to have dark, scaly-looking skin, visible pink flesh and a portion resembling a foot or claw still attached.

But instead of identifying the animal, the package label simply read:

“Unknown – New Scale Item.”

The item appeared to be priced at approximately $10.99 per pound in the original video. Clearly confused by what she was seeing, Trotter filmed the package and issued a warning that quickly caught viewers’ attention:

“Y’all be careful in America.”

Naturally, the internet had plenty to say.

One commenter joked:

“They serving Godzilla.”

Another imagined how the unusual product might have made it onto the shelf:

“Manager said, ‘Put it on sale, they’ll throw butter and Old Bay on it.”

Not everyone found the discovery funny. One commenter wrote:

“Call the f—— health department.”

As the video spread across social media and collected millions of views, viewers began examining the dark scales, pink flesh and attached claw for clues. Some believed they could identify the animal. Others thought the entire thing looked like something straight out of a fantasy movie.

Then Hy-Vee revealed what was actually inside the package.

Hy-Vee Reveals the ‘Unknown Meat’ Was Actually Alligator

According to a statement provided by Hy-Vee to BroBible, the mysterious meat was alligator.

A Hy-Vee spokesperson said:

“We are aware that alligator being sold at one store was not labeled appropriately, and we have addressed the situation.”

That distinction is important.

The available evidence does not show that Hy-Vee knowingly placed genuinely unidentified meat on sale. Instead, the retailer acknowledged that alligator being sold at one store had been given an inappropriate label and said the situation had been addressed.

In other words, the viral mystery appears to have been caused by a store-level labeling error, rather than the grocery chain not knowing what kind of animal the meat came from.

Why Was Alligator Meat Being Sold at an Iowa Grocery Store?

The answer may sound surprising, especially to shoppers who have never seen it in a supermarket freezer, but alligator meat is an edible food product commercially sold in the United States.

Its presence in a grocery store is therefore not, by itself, evidence that anything improper was happening.

Iowa’s current administrative rules also specifically define alligator as a type of “fish” for purposes of the state’s food regulations when the animal is intended for human consumption. That does not mean shoppers are literally buying conventional finfish. It is a regulatory classification used within Iowa’s food rules.

What made Trotter’s discovery so startling was the particular cut.

Consumers may be more familiar with alligator-tail meat served in restaurants or specialty food markets. The package shown in the viral video, however, appeared to include a portion of an alligator foot with its claws still attached.

That visual alone was enough to turn an otherwise commercially available food product into a full-blown social media mystery.

Was the ‘Unknown – New Scale Item’ Label Actually Allowed?

This is where the incident raises a legitimate issue.

Iowa’s current administrative rules state that labels required under the state’s food regulations must be legibly printed and “not be deceptive as to the true nature of the article or place of production.”

Federal food-labeling rules also require applicable meat and poultry products to carry identifying information. According to the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, labels generally include the product name, inspection legend and establishment number, handling statement, net weight, ingredients statement, address line, nutrition facts and safe-handling instructions, where applicable.

The USDA also states that its labeling program is intended to ensure regulated meat, poultry and egg products are labeled truthfully and are not misleading.

So, a package of alligator labeled simply as “Unknown – New Scale Item” would not accurately identify the product for an ordinary consumer. Hy-Vee itself acknowledged that the alligator at the store was “not labeled appropriately.”

However, the labeling mistake should not be exaggerated into claims that the product was unsafe, contaminated or illegally sold. No such finding is established by the available information surrounding the incident.

The Mystery Was Real—But It Wasn’t ‘Unsafe Mystery Meat’

The phrase “unknown meat” understandably made the viral story sound alarming. For shoppers, seeing a scaly animal foot with claws attached and a label that provides almost no explanation would raise obvious questions.

But the evidence supports a much narrower conclusion.

The meat was alligator, according to Hy-Vee. The retailer said the product at one store had been improperly labeled and confirmed that the issue had been addressed.

There is no evidence in the available reporting that health officials found the meat to be contaminated, that customers became ill from consuming it, or that Hy-Vee was broadly selling unidentified meat throughout its stores.

Alligator meat is commercially available in the United States, and Iowa’s food regulations expressly account for alligator intended for human consumption.

For Trotter, though, the discovery was still a wildly unexpected grocery-store moment. A package containing what appeared to be part of a scaly animal foot was sitting in a freezer with a label that essentially told shoppers nothing about what they were buying.

And that is what transformed a routine trip to Hy-Vee into a viral internet mystery.

The story has been compiled using information from BroBible, the Iowa Legislature’s current administrative rules, the Iowa Administrative Code, the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service and the original TikTok video posted by Tyleah Trotter (@tyleahtrotter940).

The viral video shows a specific package at one Hy-Vee location and should not be interpreted as evidence that all Hy-Vee stores were selling incorrectly labeled alligator products or that the product was unsafe. Hy-Vee stated that the labeling issue had been addressed.
