How to Start “The Crimson Kimono” Mythic Tale?

Begin by traveling to Sakuru Woods in Teshio Ridge. Near a large orange-leaved Mother Daughter Tree, you will find Ugetsu, a storyteller seated beneath its glowing canopy. Speak with him to initiate the tale. His melancholic account sets the stage for your journey, a story of love lost and a garment that binds two souls.
Step-by-Step Walkthrough
Once the cutscene ends, examine the snow sculpture beside him. This triggers the appearance of red yuki mushi, ethereal insects that act as guides throughout the quest.
1. Follow the Red Yuki Mushi to a Campsite
The yuki mushi lead you through the snow to an abandoned campsite nearby. Interact with the scroll on the ground to learn of a clue pointing toward the Hakodake Mountains.

Tip: Use your horse to reach the area quickly and mark the orange Mother Daughter Tree on your map as your next objective.
2. Journey to the Hakodake Mountains
Head north from Sakuru Woods to reach the eastern Hakodake Mountains. You will spot another orange Mother Daughter Tree standing out among the white snowscape. Beneath it lies another snow sculpture. Interact with it to summon the red yuki mushi again.
However, before you proceed, a group of shinobi will ambush you from the snowbanks. Eliminate them efficiently, as stealth and counters work best due to their quick movements.
3. Find the Abandoned Shack
Once the area is clear, follow the yuki mushi uphill until you reach an abandoned shack. Inside, read the scroll resting on the wooden floorboards. It reveals another destination, north of Teshio River.
4. Travel to the Northern Teshio River
From Hakodake, head southwest to the northern edge of Teshio River. Among a field of pale birches, another orange Mother Daughter Tree will stand alone. Beneath it lies a third snow sculpture. Inspect it to once again summon the red yuki mushi.
5. Follow the Yuki Mushi Through the Mountain Path
This time, the insects will guide you toward a narrow crawl space hidden behind rocks. Slip through and enter a cold, silent cave. Inside, follow the glowing trail through tight gaps and ledges, a mostly linear path that winds through icy walls.
- Turn right at the frozen puddle and climb the opposite wall
- Swing across a small ravine using your grappling hook
- Proceed through another tunnel until daylight breaks ahead
Soon, you will emerge into an open clearing where an abandoned home waits, a relic of a family’s final winter.
6. Explore the Abandoned Home

Enter the house and climb the ladder to the attic. There, on a small wooden table, lies a final scroll. Reading it reveals the tale’s conclusion and points you toward the last snow sculpture, the one you may have noticed by the frozen stream below.

7. Examine the Final Snow Sculpture

Exit the house and approach the snow sculpture near the frozen river. It is incomplete, as if awaiting its missing half. Interacting with it will trigger the appearance of the yuki mushi one final time.
8. The Mother’s Grave and the Crimson Kimono
Follow the glowing insects past the stream until you reach a grave site nestled behind the home. Examine the rocks to the right of the grave, and you will uncover a small chest containing the Crimson Kimono Armor.

Atsu will automatically equip it in a brief cutscene, symbolizing both the end of the tale and the continuation of a legacy woven from love and sacrifice.
Rewards & Armor Effects
Reward: Crimson Kimono (Armor Set)
Crimson Kimono Effects (at max level):
- Greatly reduces enemy detection radius
- Allows Chain Assassinations using up to two kunai
- Increases the range for Kusarigama Assassinations

This armor is particularly effective for stealth-based builds, emphasizing quiet precision and control. It also pairs well with charms that boost stealth damage or kunai effectiveness.
Lore Insight – The Tale of the Mother and Daughter
While The Crimson Kimono functions as a quest, it is also one of Ghost of Yotei’s most emotionally resonant mythic tales. The Mother Daughter Tree serves as a recurring symbol of memory, each orange-leaved tree marking where warmth once defied the snow. Ugetsu’s storytelling is not mere folklore; it is a remembrance of a love that transcended time and tragedy.
Following the yuki mushi feels almost spiritual. They embody both guidance and grief, leading Atsu through echoes of another’s sorrow until she becomes part of their story herself.
