Rather than opening with the familiar image of an adult Jason stalking teenagers around Camp Crystal Lake, the new series travels back to the origins of the tragedy. Linda Cardellini’s Pamela Voorhees Takes Centre Stage Before Jason’s Horror Legacy
Pamela Voorhees is no stranger to Friday the 13th mythology. Betsy Palmer famously portrayed her in the original 1980 film, where she was revealed to be behind the murders at Camp Crystal Lake.

Brad Caleb Kane Says Crystal Lake Is Not a Traditional Slasher
Kane has made one thing clear: viewers should not expect eight episodes of teenagers arriving at camp and immediately being hunted.
He described the series as “a psychological thriller” and “a paranoid ’70s thriller,” explaining that it has “all of the DNA of a slasher without quite being a slasher.”
The showrunner wanted to explore the social and cultural anxieties surrounding the era that produced the original Friday the 13th.
“I tried to think about Crystal Lake and a Friday the 13th prequel as, ‘What era did the first movie come out of?’” Kane said. “It came out of the paranoid ’70s thriller era. It came out of the mistrust-of-institutions era. It came out of the women’s lib era, the National Organization for Women era, this consciousness-raising awakening era in America. I wanted to go and play with all of those themes.”
Still, fans waiting for the bloodshed should not panic.
“There are rivers of blood in the show. There are very, I think, ingenious kill sequences and deaths and murders, but it’s all done in service of character and theme and place and time.”

Crystal Lake Will Build Slowly — Then Pamela “Goes Full Friday the 13th”
Kane recently revealed that the first half of the season may leave viewers wondering when the franchise’s familiar violence will fully arrive.
He said audiences could watch the first four episodes and think: “Okay. They are telling a story, and there’s a little bit of paranoid conspiracy thriller here, and it’s a psychological devolution or evolution, however you want to put it; but where’s Friday the 13th?”
His answer was simple and seriously ominous.
“Pam goes full Friday the 13th in this season, and you will see it.”
Kane also promised “a series of kills that are everything the movies do” and said they would hopefully satisfy “the real hunt hack-and-slash fans, too; we build to it, but it’s coming.”
He explained that the creative team deliberately avoided copying the traditional movie structure, noting that Crystal Lake is about the town and Jason’s mother rather than simply repeating the familiar formula.

Linda Cardellini Confirms the Gore Is Very Real
Cardellini has also reassured horror fans that the psychological approach does not mean the series is avoiding practical blood and gore.
“This is a longer format so there’s a lot more you get to do in eight episodes,” she said. “It’s not necessarily like 90 minutes of pure horror. There’s a lot of story there. So maybe once in a while you’ll throw some things and scream.”
The practical effects apparently became intense enough to leave an impression on the actor.
“It does get gory, yes, so much so that I wish sometimes they weren’t as practical as they were,” Cardellini said. “There’s a couple of gory moments on set that were very practical that were pretty gross. Blood everywhere at one point.”
Playing Pamela also gave her a completely different horror experience.
“Everything that I’ve ever read that was handed to me that was in that space was for the person who was being chased, not the person who was chasing everyone,” she said. “It was really fun this time to be on the other side of the knife.”
Kane has praised her performance as “inconceivably brilliant in it” and promised: “She’s gonna shock and surprise a lot of people.”
