Prince William Reportedly Feels Harry and Meghan’s UK Return Has ‘Derailed’ a Happy Time for His Family

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are back in Britain with their children after six years in California, but their return has reportedly sent fresh ripples through an already complicated royal family dynamic. According to reports cited by Vanity Fair, Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, were caught off guard by the Sussexes’ sudden decision to make the UK their primary base for an extended period.

The move does not mean Harry and Meghan are returning to royal duties. But with Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, expected to begin school near the family’s new home in the Cotswolds, the Sussexes’ presence in Britain could bring the famously estranged brothers much closer together again—and that is where things reportedly get complicated.

More Royal Tension: This isn’t the first sign of strain reportedly building between the brothers, King Charles’ own recent gesture toward Harry has apparently caused friction of its own. Prince William Reportedly Feels Harry and Meghan’s UK Return Has ‘Derailed’ a Happy Family Moment

Harry and Meghan returned to the United Kingdom on August 26 with Archie and Lilibet after spending six years living in California. According to Vanity Fair, two sources familiar with the situation said the children are expected to attend a prep school in the Cotswolds, close to the Sussexes’ new home.

The couple will reportedly retain their Montecito property while continuing their independent professional and charitable work. Their move is also expected to keep them outside the official working monarchy.

For Harry, being back in Britain reportedly represents an opportunity to spend more time with his father, King Charles III, and reconnect with family and friends. But William is said to view the situation through a very different lens.

A source told Vanity Fair, “There’s a sense that William is going to have to be watching over his shoulder the whole time. He doesn’t know what his brother is going to spring on them all next.”

The source added, “This was meant to be a happy time for him. Catherine is doing well and George is just about to start Eton. This has just derailed them.”

William and Kate have recently been spending time with King Charles, Queen Camilla and other senior royals in Scotland. According to Vanity Fair, the family has held several discussions about Harry and Meghan’s return and what their long-term UK presence could mean.

Palace aides denied reports of a formal Balmoral “summit.” However, Vanity Fair reported that William and Charles have spoken “one-on-one” about the Sussexes and are reportedly “on the same page” that Harry and Meghan should remain private individuals without royal duties.

More William Frustration: This apparently isn’t the only recent moment William has been reported to react strongly to, a dispute over Kate’s monogram reportedly set him off in a similar way. Harry and Meghan’s Royal Status Is Reportedly a Major Concern for William and Charles

The Sussexes stepped down from official royal duties in 2020 before eventually relocating to California, where they built independent careers and business interests.

According to one source, William remains deeply concerned about why the couple decided to return so quickly.

“Prince William is very concerned about the Sussexes coming back and why they have made the decision so quickly,” the source told Vanity Fair.

The source continued, “He is adamant the situation must remain as it is and that Harry and Meghan will not carry out royal engagements. He has sought his father’s assurance there will be no changes to the present situation.”

The position reportedly aligns with Harry and Meghan’s own plans. A representative for the couple has said they do not intend to resume royal duties.

Another major issue hanging over the move is security. Harry previously challenged the decision regarding his level of taxpayer-funded protection in Britain and lost an appeal in May 2025. With the Sussexes now expected to spend substantially more time in the country, their security arrangements are expected to be reviewed.

According to Vanity Fair, William and Charles are “completely aligned” that Harry and Meghan’s status as nonworking royals should not change. Still, Harry has repeatedly argued that he requires adequate protection while visiting Britain, making security another potentially sensitive issue.

King Charles Is Reportedly Happy to Have Harry and the Children Closer

While William reportedly has major concerns, Harry’s relationship with King Charles appears to have improved in recent months.

The Sussexes visited Britain in July, allowing Charles to spend time with Archie and Lilibet. Harry is reportedly hoping that living closer to Britain will make regular contact with his father easier.

A source told Vanity Fair, “Charles is genuinely happy that Harry is back, because it means they will see more of him and the children, but I do know that he is dreading the prospect of Harry resurrecting his battle with the Home Office over security and the sense that the Harry-and-Meghan soap opera is about to start all over again.”

The family situation remains far from simple. Harry is still estranged from William, while his relationships with other senior members of the royal family also remain difficult.

The Sussexes are not expected to move into royal accommodation. Instead, they are expected to live at a private, non-royal residence outside London, with the Cotswolds widely identified as the area where they intend to establish their UK base.

Harry and Meghan Are Building a New Independent Life in Britain

The move is not being presented as a reversal of Harry and Meghan’s decision to leave royal life in 2020.

They will continue operating independently, with Harry expected to focus on charitable work, business activities and the Invictus Games. Meghan is continuing her work with her lifestyle brand, As Ever.

There has also been speculation about Meghan potentially returning to acting. Vanity Fair reported that an offer for a role in Guy Ritchie’s Netflix drama The Gentlemen remains on the table, although no final casting announcement has established that she will join the series.

Harry has also continued reshaping his charitable commitments. He stepped down as patron of Sentebale following a dispute surrounding the charity and, in August, stepped down as a trustee of African Parks after a decade with the organization.

More Royal Family Dynamics: Independent lives and complicated in-law relationships aren’t unique to the Sussexes, William’s own reported feelings about Kate’s parents have sparked plenty of conversation too. Could Harry’s Return to Britain Eventually Change His Relationship With Prince William?

The biggest unanswered question is whether living in the same country could eventually change the relationship between William and Harry.

Royal author Andrew Morton told Vanity Fair that tensions between the brothers existed long before Meghan entered the picture but have since become significantly more serious.

“There have always been tensions between William and Harry, even before Meghan came on the scene,” Morton said, “from who would get the biggest room at Balmoral to their charities. But those tensions are greater now than they have ever been. The brothers are at opposite ends of the spectrum. By coming back home, Harry has changed the narrative and William is fuming.”

Morton added, “I think there will be pressure on William to be the bigger person and forgive his brother, but I think that is still some way off.”

For now, there is no indication that a reconciliation is imminent. Buckingham Palace has declined to comment on Harry and Meghan’s return, while the Sussexes have maintained that they have no plans to resume royal duties.

The reality is now impossible to ignore: Harry and Meghan are back in Britain with their children, yet remain outside the working royal family. Their return could give King Charles more time with his son and grandchildren, but it may also place Harry and William closer than they have been in years. Whether that proximity eventually heals old wounds—or creates an entirely new chapter of tension—remains to be seen.
