Some news hits differently. Nearly two years after the world lost Liam Payne, court documents have confirmed what many suspected but hoped would bring some measure of peace: everything the former One Direction star left behind goes to his only child. Bear Grey Payne, just nine years old, now stands as the sole beneficiary of his father’s $29 million estate, a fortune that will largely wait for him in trust until he comes of age. It is bittersweet in the truest sense.

What the Court Documents Confirm

According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, Bear Grey Payne is the sole inheritor of $29,007,998 from Liam Payne’s estate. The May 1 filing confirms that a portion of the funds can be accessed now, but the majority will remain held in a trust until Bear turns 18 years old.

Payne died on October 16, 2024, at age 31, after falling from the balcony of his third-floor room at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He did not have a will in place at the time of his death.

Under British probate law, if a UK citizen dies without a will and has no living spouse or civil partner, their children typically inherit the estate. Since Payne was not married at the time of his death, Bear becomes the natural and sole recipient under that framework.

Who Is Managing the Estate

Back in May 2025, a court named two administrators to oversee Payne’s estate until the inheritance can be formally distributed. Those administrators are:

Bear’s mother, Cheryl (also known as Cheryl Cole or Cheryl Tweedy), the former Girls Aloud singer and X Factor UK judge, and attorney Richard Mark Bray.

The BBC previously reported that Cheryl and Bray hold the authority “to preserve the deceased’s estate until a general grant is made,” however, they currently have limited authority and cannot distribute the funds. The gross value of Payne’s estate in the UK stood at $38 million, with the net value sitting at approximately $32.2 million at the time of that filing.

Liam Payne and Cheryl dated from 2016 to 2018. They welcomed Bear on March 22, 2017, and Payne marked the occasion on Instagram at the time, writing: “I’m incredibly happy to welcome our new baby boy into the world, it’s a moment that I will never forget for the rest of my life and my favourite memory I have so far. I’m completely in awe of his incredible mother and how she has been the whole way through this, she’s really made my dreams come true.”

Liam Payne on Fatherhood

Payne spoke openly about how much Bear meant to him across multiple interviews over the years. He told PEOPLE in 2018:

“I always wanted to be a young dad, but I didn’t really expect that I’d ever be in this place. When I’m at home, I’m a dad. Then when I work, I see all these crazy things.”

He also shared a lighter memory of Bear as a toddler during a 2019 appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show:

“We put this Batman costume on him in the house, and it was a little bit slidey on the floor, and he kept falling off the sofa. And if I said ‘Whoopsie-daisy!’ it was like the best thing ever.”

In a December 2020 PEOPLE interview, Payne reflected more honestly:

“I had my son at a young age, and you think it will be a magical thing, that you’re going to grow up one day into the person you’re supposed to be. But it took a lot to find my footing.”

How Liam Payne Died

Liam Payne died on October 16, 2024, after falling from the balcony of his third-floor room at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires. An autopsy confirmed he died from multiple traumas consistent with a fall from height, including internal and external hemorrhage across the skull, thorax, abdomen, and limbs. A toxicology report later confirmed the presence of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in his system at the time of death.

Prosecutors determined that Payne likely could not have acted consciously or voluntarily given his condition, effectively ruling out any intentional act.

In connection with his death, five people faced charges in Argentina. The hotel manager, receptionist, and Payne’s personal representative were charged with negligent homicide. A hotel employee and a waiter were charged with drug supply.

Bear’s Life Since His Father’s Death

Cheryl has kept Bear largely out of the public eye since Payne’s passing. However, in April 2026, she shared a rare glimpse of their son during a trip to Disney World, a location that held deep personal significance given that it was one of Payne’s favourite places. Payne’s sister Ruth Gibbins also shared her own photos from the trip, writing:

“Always in your honour Liam, you’d have loved this trip.”

Payne’s One Direction bandmates, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan, each paid tribute to him after his death. Styles later described the grief publicly, saying:

“It’s so difficult to lose a friend. It’s difficult to lose any friend, but it’s so difficult to lose a friend who is so like you in so many ways. It’s like, I saw someone with the kindest heart who just wanted to be great.”

Payne also made a posthumous appearance as a guest judge on the Netflix singing competition Building the Band, which the series dedicated to him and his family.

Bear Grey Payne carries his father’s name, his father’s fortune, and, by all accounts, the deep love of a man who never stopped talking about how proud he was to be his dad. The money will wait for him until he turns 18. The legacy, however, is already his.
