However, something genuinely interesting is happening to Rip Wheeler’s role in the Yellowstone spinoff, and it changes the dynamic of the entire show. Is Cole Hauser Leaving Dutton Ranch?
No. Cole Hauser is not leaving Dutton Ranch. In fact, Hauser serves as both the star and an executive producer on the series. In a PEOPLE interview, Hauser spoke directly about the weight of that expanded role, saying:
“It was more responsibility, to be quite honest, which I think Kelly and I took on and enjoyed for the most part. We put a lot of work into the continuation of the show with Christina Alexandra Voros, with Chad Feehan and everybody else that was part of it.”
The confusion comes from a real shift in Rip’s story, not from any rumour about Hauser’s departure.
What Changed for Rip Wheeler in Dutton Ranch
Dutton Ranch picks up after the events of the Yellowstone series finale, with Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton leaving Montana behind following the death of her father, John Dutton (Kevin Costner). The couple relocates to South Texas, where they purchase the Edwards Ranch in Rio Paloma and attempt to build a new life on their own terms.
However, things go sideways early. In the opening stretch of Season 1, their ranch gets devastated by a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak, forcing Rip and his crew to euthanize the entire Dutton Ranch cattle herd. With no cattle and no way to generate income, Rip and Beth temporarily take work at the neighbouring 10-Petal Ranch, owned by Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening).
That shift means Rip now runs day-to-day operations at the 10-Petal Ranch, while his ranch hands handle things back at Dutton Ranch. The show leans heavily into the classic Yellowstone formula of moral complexity and escalating violence, while giving Beth and Rip room to breathe and build something that is entirely their own, no longer operating under John Dutton’s shadow.
Who Is Replacing Rip Wheeler’s Old Role
Because Rip’s original Yellowstone role was so layered, the show fills it with three characters rather than one.
| Character | Actor | What They Cover |
| Azul | J.R. Villarreal | The loyal, hardworking ranch foreman side of Rip |
| Chet | Hart Denton | The darker, more dangerous enforcer side of Rip |
| Zachariah | Marc Menchaca | The hardened, morally complex ranch hand supporting operations |
Azul takes on the traditional foreman duties at Dutton Ranch, embodying the loyalty and work ethic that Rip brought to the Yellowstone Ranch under John Dutton. He has stepped up as a standout presence in the crew, though he has not yet displayed Rip’s capacity for violence.
Chet fills a very different space. Now managing the bunkhouse at the 10-Petal Ranch, Chet witnessed Beulah’s son Rob-Will (Jai Courtney) murder a cowboy named Wes (Nakoa DeCoite) and chose loyalty over doing the right thing. He brings the brutal, boundary-crossing edge that Rip used to carry in Yellowstone. In Season 1 Episode 2, Chet beats two cowboys, sending one to the hospital after Beulah encourages him to embrace that harder side.
Zachariah, introduced as someone with a hardened past, rounds out the trio. Much like characters throughout Taylor Sheridan’s wider universe, Zachariah is comfortable operating in morally grey territory, making him a natural fit for the kind of situation Rip’s absence from the home ranch creates.
None of these three characters is a direct copy of Rip. However, together they cover the different sides of what made Rip so compelling in the original series.
What Is Rip and Beth’s New Dynamic
Executive producer Christina Alexandra Voros told Page Six that audiences “love vintage Rip and Beth,” and the show has not abandoned that chemistry. The couple still supports each other through morally questionable situations, including a scene where Rip sets an enemy’s trailer on fire and Beth waits in the car without question. However, Voros noted that both characters are entering “a slightly more mature era.”
She added: “You really see these two people who have fought so hard to try to finally have peace. And no matter how badly they want it, war keeps coming to their doorstep.”
Meanwhile, Rip’s own situation is getting more complicated. After discovering a body partially buried on the Dutton Ranch property, he hides it in a freezer, keeping the couple insulated from the worst of it for now, but setting up potential problems ahead.
The Threat of Rob-Will
The most recent episode brought a new complication: Beulah announced that her volatile, recovering addict son Rob-Will would take over running the 10-Petal Ranch. Rip and Rob-Will already have a history after a physical confrontation in a parking lot earlier in the season. With Rob-Will back in charge, Rip’s time at the 10-Petal may not last much longer, which could force the couple to figure out what comes next for their cattle-less home ranch sooner than expected.
The Show Has Not Yet Been Renewed for Season 2
Dutton Ranch drew over 12 million viewers in its debut week, marking one of the biggest series launches in Paramount+ history. However, the show has not yet received an official Season 2 renewal.
The behind-the-scenes situation adds another layer of uncertainty. Showrunner Chad Feehan was quietly let go three weeks before the premiere amid reported clashes with Hauser and Reilly. A source told Page Six: “Chad won’t be returning should the show be picked up for a second season.” The show currently has a massive audience and an unresolved question mark where its showrunner should be.
