Housing in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is more flexible than it first appears. Whether you want to relocate a Mii’s house to a different spot on your island, merge homes together, or understand how Miis move in and out of shared living arrangements, this guide covers everything you need to know.

How to Relocate a House on the Island

You can move any Mii’s house to a different location on your island using the Island Builder feature. This lets you rearrange where individual houses and mansions sit, giving you full control over your island’s layout. Island Builder also supports a Batch mode that lets you move multiple objects at once, which is useful when you want to reorganise larger sections of your island in one go.

How Miis Move In Together: Group Housing Explained

When two Miis reach at least the Great Friends relationship level, one of them may ask to live with the other. You can encourage this to happen or talk them out of it. If both Miis agree to move in together, they will request a bigger house. The game will then automatically take you to Island Builder, where you can choose a new location for their merged home.

This merged home is known as a Mansion or Group House. It combines the Miis’ original individual rooms with a new, larger common room that serves as the kitchen, dining room, and living area.

Up to 8 Miis can live together in a single Group House. Keeping all their friendship levels high gives the best chance of everyone staying under one roof. When a new Group House is placed, you also get the chance to give it a household name, which can be changed at any time through the House Editor.

One thing worth knowing is that newlywed couples frequently request to move in together after getting married, so marriage is one of the most common triggers for Group Housing to form naturally. If a married couple is already living in a Group House and wants their own space, they may also request to move out together as a pair.

To help build friendships toward the Great Friends level faster, drag Miis together regularly and have them dine or eat together. These interactions build the bond more reliably than leaving Miis to find each other on their own.

Can Miis Move Out of a Group House?

Yes, Miis can leave a Group House. There are a few ways this can happen:

  • If a Mii’s relationship with their housemates weakens over time, they may express a desire to move out and live alone again. You can accept their request or persuade them to stay.
  • If more than two Miis are living together and two of them get married, the newlywed couple may ask to move out of the Group House and into their own place. You can agree or convince them to remain.
  • A Mii already in a Group House may also randomly decide they want to move elsewhere, either on their own or by bringing another housemate with them.

It is worth knowing that Miis do not move out on your command. Moving out only happens when a Mii brings it up themselves, and you respond to their request at that point. There is no direct option to force a Mii to leave a Group House.

How to Change the Interior and Exterior of a House

Once your Miis are settled, you can personalise their living space through the House Editor, accessible from the menu when you are inside a Mii’s home. If you are outside the house, select it first through the House menu before the renovation options appear.

Interior Sets can be purchased from the T&C Reno furniture shop. This shop unlocks after you have created your 4th Mii and formed at least two friendships on the island, not simply by having four Miis present. You can apply a full Interior Set to change an entire room at once, or mix and match individual wallpaper and flooring options from different sets. In Group Houses, each room is renovated separately, meaning you need one Interior Set per room.

You can also create custom Interior Sets using the Palette House Workshop, provided you have unlocked the corresponding option at the Wishing Fountain.

For exterior customisation, there are no preset exterior designs available to purchase. Instead, you use the Palette House Workshop to design your own custom exterior. The Palette House typically becomes available after your 6th or 7th Mii joins the island, and is often tied to a specific yellow pondering request or reaching a certain island level. Once the Palette House is accessible, you spend 1 Wish at the Wishing Fountain to unlock the House Exterior option. After creating a custom exterior design in the Workshop, it becomes available to purchase at the T&C Reno shop.

The Wishing Fountain plays a broader role in unlocking house customisation options, so spending Wishes on housing-related options early is worthwhile if personalising your island is a priority.
