Can Miis Cheat on Each Other in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream?

Two Mii characters in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream interacting on a lawn with various items scattered around.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream puts you in charge of an island full of Mii characters who live, socialise, fall in love, and cause all sorts of drama. If you have been watching your Miis’ relationships unfold, you might be curious about whether the chaos can go further. Can a Mii in a relationship develop feelings for someone else? Can they actually cheat?

Can Miis Cheat in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream?

Yes, in limited circumstances. A Mii who is already in a relationship can still have another Mii confess feelings to them. If the existing relationship is at a low enough level, specifically at “Kinda getting along” or lower, the taken Mii may actually accept that confession, effectively ditching their current sweetheart without a formal breakup event taking place.

However, this outcome is rare and depends heavily on how strong the existing relationship is at the time. If the sweetheart bond is solid, the taken Mii will almost always reject any outside confession.

Can a Mii in a Relationship Develop Feelings for Someone New?

This is where things get interesting. Single Miis can absolutely develop crushes on Miis who are already in relationships. However, the reverse situation, where a Mii who is already a sweetheart develops a crush on someone completely new, is more complicated and largely driven by the simulation rather than anything you directly control.

What you can do is encourage interactions between two Miis and hope that chemistry builds over time. However, the game does not guarantee that a taken Mii will start developing feelings just because you put them together frequently.

Can Miis Break Up?

Yes, Miis can break up in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. Breakups can happen in a few ways:

  • A Mii’s romantic feelings simply fade over time, and the relationship status drops
  • A couple gets into a fight that you fail to resolve, which can cause the relationship to worsen progressively
  • A taken Mii accepts a confession from an outside Mii, which replaces the existing relationship

Importantly, you cannot directly force two Miis to break up. The simulation drives these outcomes, and your influence over them is limited to nudging interactions and responding to events as they come up.

How Relationship Levels Affect Cheating and Breakups

The strength of a sweetheart relationship plays a direct role in how vulnerable it is to outside interference. Here is a quick look at the Sweethearts relationship level scale:

LevelStatus
1Not getting along
2Kinda getting along
3Really likes
4Falling in love
5In love
6Super in love
7Wants to marry

A Mii at level 1 or 2 is far more likely to accept a confession from someone outside the relationship. A Mii at level 5, 6, or 7 will almost certainly reject any outside confession and stay loyal to their current partner.

What Happens to the Rejected Sweetheart?

When a taken Mii accepts someone else’s confession, their current sweetheart does not receive a standard breakup event. Instead, that Mii will become sad, in the same way they would after a regular rejection. Their happiness meter will be replaced by a sadness meter, and they will stop participating in island activities until you cheer them up.

Key Things to Know About Relationships and Drama

  • Miis can only have one active crush at a time. If they develop feelings for a second Mii while already interested in someone, you will be asked which relationship to pursue
  • Relationships can be one-sided. A Mii can be deeply in love while their partner is only at a “kinda getting along” status
  • Fights can weaken relationships significantly, and unresolved fights over time can lead to a breakup
  • Dating multiple Miis at once is not possible. The game will always prompt you to choose one path if feelings develop in multiple directions
  • Miis continue to interact while you are offline, which means relationship changes, for better or worse, can happen without your input

Can You Control Any of This?

Only partially. You can encourage interactions by dragging and dropping Miis near each other, send Miis to help others who have frozen or fallen over (which builds affection), and respond to pink thought bubbles to guide confessions and crush outcomes. However, who actually falls for who, and whether a relationship holds together, is largely determined by the simulation itself and the personality compatibility between your Miis.

There are 16 personality types in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, and compatibility between them affects how easily two Miis bond, whether platonically or romantically. The game does not spell out which personalities mesh well, so some of the drama on your island will always catch you off guard.
