Windrose is a pirate survival game currently in Early Access on PC, and if you are planning to sail with friends across different storefronts, the crossplay situation is one of the most important things to clarify before you buy. There is conflicting information circulating online right now, so this guide brings together the most reliable community sources and post-launch reports to give you the clearest picture available.

Does Windrose Have Crossplay?

No, Windrose does not currently support crossplay between storefronts. Based on the majority of community reports, guides, and Steam discussions published after the April 14, 2026 Early Access launch, the Steam, Epic Games Store, and Stove versions run on separate networks. Players on different storefronts cannot join the same session, even when using dedicated servers or invite codes.

Multiple reliable sources published between April 14 and 21, 2026 are consistent on this point. Here is what they confirm:

  • Steam and Epic versions are separate, and crossplay between them is not supported at launch.
  • Co-op only works between players on the same platform.
  • Kraken Express has not announced crossplay support.
  • No crossplay exists between Steam and Epic Games Store players, as the two networks are separate.

It is worth noting that one source has claimed dedicated servers enable cross-store play via invite codes. However, this appears to be an outlier that contradicts the broader community consensus, and no official confirmation from Kraken Express exists to support it. Until the developers make an official statement, the safe and evidence-based answer is that crossplay is not available, and everyone in your group should buy Windrose on the same storefront.

Crossplay remains a frequently requested feature in the official Discord. If it gets added in a future update, the developers will likely announce it via the official website at playwindrose.com, the Steam page, or the Windrose Discord server.

What Platforms Is Windrose Available On?

Windrose is currently available on the following PC platforms only:

PlatformAvailability
SteamAvailable in Early Access
Epic Games StoreAvailable in Early Access
StoveAvailable in Early Access
PS5 / XboxNot available (PC only for now)

Regarding console availability, Kraken Express has expressed enthusiasm for eventual PS5 and Xbox ports, however the studio is currently focused on PC stability and the 1.0 release first. No timeline or confirmation exists for consoles, and fans are directed to official channels for future platform announcements. The 1.0 release is expected after roughly two to three years of Early Access development.

There is also no local co-op or split-screen in Windrose. Every player needs their own copy of the game and their own machine. The game also does not allow Family Share to run two copies simultaneously.

What Are the Ways to Play Windrose With Friends?

As long as you and your friends are on the same storefront, there are three ways to set up a multiplayer session:

1. Host a peer-to-peer session Launch the game, start a world, and invite friends via your platform’s friends list. This is the easiest option for casual sessions. However, the world only exists while you are online, so anyone who wants to play has to wait for the host to be available.

2. Join a friend via invite code Open the multiplayer menu, paste the invite code your friend shares with you, and connect directly. This is the most common method for casual groups and works within the same storefront only.

3. Use a dedicated server A dedicated server runs the world around the clock on separate hardware. Players can join and leave on their own schedules without needing the original host to be online. You can rent a dedicated Windrose server through providers such as Nitrado, with costs typically ranging between $10 and $15 per month depending on slots and provider. Self-hosting via SteamCMD is also an option. Note that there is no public server browser in Windrose, so all sessions remain invite-only whether using a code or a friends list.

How Many Players Can Play Together in Windrose?

Player CountStatus
2 to 4 playersRecommended sweet spot for best performance
5 to 8 playersSupported, with some performance variability
Up to 8 playersStable maximum currently
10 playersExperimental, treat as unstable

The developers recommend four players for the best experience, particularly in the late game when the world fills up with structures, enemies, and active ship combat. Performance in Windrose scales with player count and world complexity, as the game runs on Unreal Engine and requires more processing power as sessions grow larger.

Loot and Progression in Co-op

A couple of things worth knowing about how loot and progression work when playing with friends:

  • Chest loot is individual. Each player receives their own rewards from chests, so there is no race to grab items first.
  • Gathered resources such as wood and stone are shared. If one player spends an hour chopping trees, everyone benefits, though your island will look noticeably emptier.
  • Your character and inventory follow you between worlds. This means your progression carries over when you join a friend’s world, and you can continue quests together even if you have already made solo progress.

Known Co-op Issues and How to Fix Them

Windrose has had a strong Early Access launch, however some connectivity issues have surfaced. The developers have been actively shipping hotfixes, with connection improvements listed as a priority. Some Steam players have reported ISP routing issues that cause blocked or limited access, which Kraken Express is investigating. The studio is based in Uzbekistan, and some players have reported unusual routing through certain regions that their ISPs subsequently block or limit.

If you are running into co-op connection problems, try the following:

  1. Let the host connect and fully load into the world first before other players attempt to join.
  2. Make sure both players have completed the initial tutorial. The developers suggest ensuring Doc Galen is unlocked before connecting with friends, or at minimum that both players are on the island.
  3. Verify your Steam game files by right-clicking Windrose in your Steam library, selecting Properties, then Installed Files, and clicking Verify Integrity of Game Files.
  4. Confirm everyone is on the same storefront. Mixed-platform groups will not be able to connect until official crossplay support is added.

The Bottom Line

Windrose is a well-received Early Access launch with solid co-op foundations, but crossplay between storefronts is not available right now based on current community reports. If you are buying the game to play with friends, coordinate your group to purchase from the same storefront, whether that is Steam, Epic Games Store, or Stove. For groups on the same platform, peer-to-peer hosting works well for casual sessions, and a dedicated server is the better option for larger or more committed crews who play on different schedules. Keep an eye on playwindrose.com, the official Steam page, and the Windrose Discord for any future crossplay announcements as Early Access development continues.
