Chelsea Green is officially the new Interim WWE Women’s Champion after winning the five-woman ladder match at SummerSlam 2026 on August 2 inside U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The dramatic victory not only marks Green’s first WWE Women’s Championship gold (albeit interim) but also reshapes the women’s division while reigning champion Rhea Ripley continues recovering from a knee injury.
With WWE choosing to crown an interim champion rather than vacate the title, Green now carries championship gold into SmackDown and is expected to eventually meet Ripley in a highly anticipated title unification match once the former champion is medically cleared.

Why WWE introduced an Interim WWE Women’s Championship
The road to SummerSlam changed dramatically after Rhea Ripley suffered a meniscus tear during her WWE Women’s Championship defense against Jade Cargill at Clash in Italy, leaving her unable to compete at WWE’s biggest event of the summer.
Instead of stripping Ripley of the championship, WWE introduced an interim title. Raw General Manager (and interim SmackDown General Manager) Adam Pearce officially confirmed in mid-July that Ripley would not be medically cleared for SummerSlam, setting the stage for a ladder match to crown an interim champion.

How Chelsea Green stole the biggest win of her WWE career
The championship ladder match featured Chelsea Green, Charlotte Flair, Jade Cargill, Tiffany Stratton, and Lash Legend, with the suspended championship hanging above the ring.
The action lasted approximately 13 minutes, with momentum constantly shifting between the five competitors.
At one point, Green appeared on the verge of victory after tipping a ladder, sending Tiffany Stratton crashing into the other competitors. However, her celebration was cut short when Jade Cargill’s associates Michin and B-Fab interfered, preventing Green from climbing high enough to retrieve the championship.
As the chaos intensified, Charlotte Flair and Jade Cargill battled near the top of the ladder, each seemingly moments away from becoming interim champion. Their struggle ultimately ended with both competitors falling from the ladder, creating one final opening.
Green immediately capitalized.
With every other competitor down, Chelsea Green climbed the ladder unopposed and retrieved the suspended championship belt, officially becoming the Interim WWE Women’s Champion.
The victory represents Green’s first WWE Women’s Championship gold, although it is recognized as an interim reign. Prior to this achievement, she had already established herself as a two-time Women’s United States Champion, while also holding WWE tag team championship gold and multiple championships in other promotions.

Expert/public reaction
Chelsea Green’s celebration continued after the cameras stopped rolling.
Following the event, Green dedicated her championship victory to WWE producer Michael Hayes.
According to post-show coverage, Hayes had previously commented on WWE: Unreal that Green was entertaining but not suited for top main-event roles occupied by stars such as Flair or Stratton.
Rather than responding with words inside the ring, Green answered with championship gold.
The celebration also extended beyond WWE.
Green’s husband, Matt Cardona, publicly celebrated the achievement, adding another emotional chapter to one of the biggest moments of her wrestling career.

What’s next for Chelsea Green and the WWE Women’s Championship?
While Chelsea Green now carries the Interim WWE Women’s Championship on SmackDown, the championship picture is far from settled.
Rhea Ripley remains the officially recognized WWE Women’s Champion and continues recovering from her meniscus injury. Once she is medically cleared to return, WWE is expected to schedule a championship unification match between Ripley and Green to determine the undisputed titleholder.
Meanwhile, Charlotte Flair, Jade Cargill, Tiffany Stratton, and Lash Legend all remain major contenders in an increasingly competitive women’s division, ensuring that Green’s reign will immediately face intense scrutiny and pressure.
After years of being viewed primarily as an entertaining personality, Chelsea Green now finds herself holding the most significant singles championship of her WWE career, with an even bigger challenge potentially waiting once Rhea Ripley returns.
