Smith also explained that Logan starts out as part of Team X, alongside Sabretooth, while other recognizable Marvel characters enter the story later. Mystique and Jean Grey are among those already revealed.

There is no established Xavier-led team for Wolverine to join. There is no traditional X-Men structure surrounding Logan at the beginning of the adventure. Instead, Insomniac is giving players a Wolverine story built around Logan himself.

Why the X-Men Are Missing From Marvel’s Wolverine

Insomniac is not trying to recreate Wolverine’s most familiar comic-book timeline beat for beat.

The studio has created an original interpretation of Logan and the mutant world, with the story focusing heavily on Wolverine’s identity, relationships, memories and history.

The setting is also important.

In this universe, mutants are not yet a widely understood part of society. Many people do not even know they exist, while those who do know about them may fear them or want them eliminated. That leaves mutant characters without the established sanctuary that normally comes with Xavier’s school.

Narrative Director Walt Williams later explained that Insomniac wanted players to experience mutants as outsiders who have nowhere safe to go. Starting with the X-Men already established would have created an immediate safe space for mutants, something the developers specifically wanted to avoid.

That makes Logan a particularly useful character for entering this world.

He is already an outsider, even among mutants.

So instead of dropping players into an established superhero team, Marvel’s Wolverine lets us experience this dangerous mutant world from Logan’s perspective.

This is where the game’s alternate setup gets especially interesting.

Team X is not the X-Men.

It is a separate group connected to Logan’s history, and it gives Insomniac a way to surround Wolverine with mutant characters without immediately creating Professor X’s famous team.

The supplied game information identifies Sabretooth and Mystique among the characters connected to Team X, while later story material expands the team’s history and its connection to Nathaniel Essex. Official PlayStation coverage also describes Logan’s difficult relationship with Team X as part of the story setup.

The game takes players through locations including the wilds of Telambang and Madripoor’s Lowtown, while Wolverine’s buried past becomes increasingly important.

At the center of the conflict is Bolivar Trask, an anti-mutant industrialist whose forces target mutants.

The story therefore has a completely different foundation from the classic Xavier mansion setup. Logan is not beginning his adventure surrounded by Cyclops, Beast and the rest of the established X-Men.

Team X gives Insomniac plenty of room to explore Wolverine’s mutant connections without relying on the traditional X-Men.

The supplied story information connects Wolverine, Sabretooth, Mystique and Sunfire to the game’s Team X roster, while Nathaniel Essex is deeply connected to the team’s creation and history.

According to the game’s backstory, Team X was created during the 1960s by Nathaniel Essex as a special-operations unit designed to fight the threat posed by Bolivar Trask.

Logan eventually left the group, and his return is complicated by what happened during his earlier years with the team.

That history is important because Marvel’s Wolverine is not an origin story. Logan already has his adamantium skeleton when the game begins, but there are gaps and mysteries surrounding his past.

Players therefore get to uncover what happened during his time with Team X rather than simply watching Logan become Wolverine from scratch.

What Does Nathaniel Essex Have to Do With Team X?

This is another huge twist for fans who know the comics.

Nathaniel Essex is the real name of Mister Sinister, one of Marvel’s most infamous mutant-related villains.

The comic-book version of Sinister is an immortal geneticist obsessed with studying, manipulating, cloning and improving mutant bloodlines. He has a particularly disturbing interest in Jean Grey and the Summers family, including the creation of Madelyne Pryor, Jean’s clone.

So having Essex connected to Team X is a major reinterpretation.

In Marvel’s Wolverine, he is involved in creating the team rather than simply occupying his familiar comic-book role.

The idea fits the character’s broader obsession with mutants, but it also gives Insomniac a new way to explore Wolverine’s past.

The comic version of Team X is different, too. It has connections to the Weapon X and Weapon Plus programs, with past members including Wolverine, Sabretooth, Maverick, John Wraith, Mastodon and Silver Fox.

The lack of the X-Men does not mean Marvel’s Wolverine is short on mutant-related threats.
