Slay the Spire 2 replaces the traditional boss relics with powerful boons from Ancient characters, and the Golden Compass is one of the most unique options you can receive. Rather than giving you a direct power spike, it completely changes how Act 2 looks on your map. Here is everything you need to know about how it works, what you get, and whether it is actually worth taking.

What Is the Golden Compass in Slay the Spire 2?

The Golden Compass is one of three possible boons that the Ancient Tezcatara can offer you at the start of Act 2 in Slay the Spire 2. Unlike standard relics that sit in your inventory and provide passive bonuses throughout the run, the Golden Compass works differently. The moment you select it, the entire branching Act 2 map disappears and gets replaced with a single, linear special path that leads directly to the Act 2 boss.

Its official in-game description reads:

“Replaces the Act 2 map with a single special path.”

It is worth noting that because Slay the Spire 2 is a roguelike, the same Ancient does not always appear during every run. You will not always encounter Tezcatara, which means the Golden Compass is not guaranteed to be available in your playthrough.

How to Get the Golden Compass

The Golden Compass is not available through standard chests, merchants, or random drops during combat. There is only one way to obtain it:

  • Reach Act 2 of your current run.
  • Encounter Tezcatara, the Act 2 Ancient, at the start of the act.
  • Select the Golden Compass from the three boon options Tezcatara presents on the Blessing screen.

Because the game assigns Ancients randomly per run, Tezcatara may not appear in every playthrough. Additionally, even when Tezcatara does appear, the specific boons on offer can vary, so the Golden Compass is not always guaranteed to be one of the three choices presented.

What Does the Golden Compass Special Path Look Like?

Once you select the Golden Compass, the standard Act 2 map with its multiple branching routes disappears entirely. In its place, the game generates a single, fixed linear route to the Act 2 boss. Based on player-reported runs, the special path typically includes:

  • Two regular combat encounters
  • Two elite encounters
  • One random room
  • At least two rest sites (four rest sites is a commonly reported outcome across multiple runs)
  • At least two chests
  • One shop
  • Several event rooms

While the path is always linear, the exact order and composition of nodes can vary slightly between runs based on the seed, so the specific layout you see may differ from the one described above.

The path leads to the standard Act 2 boss. The Golden Compass does not change or replace the boss encounter at the end of the act.

Notably, the Golden Compass guarantees at least two elite encounters on the path. This is a small but meaningful benefit for players who are still working through early Epoch unlocks, since clearing elites in Act 2 contributes directly to Epoch progression on the Timeline.

What the Golden Compass Does Not Do

This is just as important as knowing what it does. The Golden Compass does not:

  • Increase the quality of card rewards during the special path.
  • Improve the gold you earn from encounters.
  • Enhance the relics available from chests or elites.
  • Change the Act 2 boss into a different or unique encounter.
  • Provide a bonus reward at the end of the special path for completing it.

The path itself is the entire reward. There is no additional incentive built into completing the Golden Compass route beyond the standard rewards you would collect from any other Act 2 path.

Is the Golden Compass Worth Taking?

This is where the Golden Compass gets genuinely debated among players, and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on the state of your run. Here is a breakdown of when it makes sense and when you should skip it:

Pick the Golden Compass If:

  • Your deck lacks synergy and needs immediate access to card upgrades, shops, and events to stabilise before the Act 2 boss.
  • You find map navigation stressful in co-op, since the Golden Compass removes all route debate and bickering by creating one fixed path everyone follows.
  • You have built up significant gold and want a guaranteed shop stop to spend it at a predictable point in the act.
  • Your current relic collection benefits from rest sites, since the special path is notably rest-site heavy.
  • You are early in your Epoch progression. The special path guarantees two elite encounters in Act 2, which helps push Timeline progress forward. For newer runs where Epoch unlocks are still being worked through, this makes the Golden Compass a slightly more attractive pick than it would be for fully unlocked rosters.

Skip the Golden Compass If:

  • Your deck is already strong. If your build is performing well, the branching map gives you more flexibility to seek out high-value elites and events that the linear path may not offer.
  • You want to avoid specific elites. The biggest downside of a linear path is that you cannot route around encounters. If a particular elite counter-matches your deck, the Golden Compass forces you to fight it regardless.
  • You prefer maximising rewards. A well-planned path through the normal Act 2 map will almost always offer better optimisation opportunities than the fixed special path.

What Are the Other Tezcatara Options?

Since the Golden Compass is generally considered the least impactful of the three Tezcatara boons, it helps to know what you are comparing it against. The other boons Tezcatara can offer include:

There is one scenario where the Golden Compass shines noticeably, and that is in Slay the Spire 2’s 4-player online co-op mode. In co-op, the shared map naturally leads to negotiation, and sometimes disagreement, about which route to take. The Golden Compass eliminates that entirely by creating a single path that everyone follows without debate. For groups that want a smoother, lower-friction co-op experience, this is a genuinely useful side benefit of the relic that goes beyond pure mechanical value.
