The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Early Access Beta just got a serious shake-up. Infinity Ward has pushed out its first major beta update for August 22, responding directly to some of the biggest Day 1 complaints while adding fresh multiplayer content for players to jump into.

The update brings the new Cachette 6v6 map, the Inflation multiplayer mode, and map voting to the beta. At the same time, enemy footsteps and gear sounds have been toned down, several weapons have been adjusted to address time-to-kill concerns, and Frangible Rounds have taken a noticeable hit.

That is only the start. The patch also improves visibility on Transit 213, introduces Daily Challenge rerolls, fixes problems affecting the Mobility Course, Gunsmith, optics, controllers, menus, and more, while Infinity Ward continues investigating several issues that remain unresolved. The developer has made it clear that these are early responses to player feedback and gameplay data, so more changes are coming as the beta rolls on.

Infinity Ward Hits Back at Day 1 Feedback With New Content, Audio Changes and Weapon Nerfs

Day 1 of the Modern Warfare 4 Early Access Beta gave Infinity Ward a huge amount of player feedback to work with, and the first major update is already addressing some of the loudest complaints.

The studio said the update was created to tackle several issues that appeared during the opening day while also giving players new content to try throughout the weekend.

Infinity Ward thanked players for their energy during Day 1 and said it was ready to continue the beta weekend with a combination of bug fixes, gameplay adjustments, a new map, and a new mode. The developer also confirmed that the new multiplayer content would enter the rotation at 10:00 a.m. PT.

One of the biggest immediate changes is audio. Enemy footsteps and gear sounds were a major talking point during the first day, and Infinity Ward responded by reducing both their overall volume and their audible range.

The goal is not to eliminate movement audio. Instead, Infinity Ward wants footsteps to tell players that an enemy is approaching without allowing them to pinpoint that opponent’s exact location from too far away.

That means players should still be able to use movement audio as an important gameplay clue, but the sound should no longer make distant enemy positioning quite so obvious.

Infinity Ward said it will continue monitoring feedback on movement audio throughout the beta, so the current footstep changes are not necessarily the final version players will hear before launch.

The update also targets another major community discussion: time-to-kill.

Infinity Ward acknowledged that the current TTK balance was not where the team wanted it to be and said it had started reducing the lethality of some weapons. The changes are an initial response rather than a final balance pass, with the Weapons Team continuing to monitor both player reactions and gameplay data.

The ISO Nightshade SMG now has increased damage falloff at range, meaning its effectiveness drops off sooner at longer distances. Its headshot multiplier has also been reduced.

The Oris 8.6 marksman rifle has received several adjustments as well. Its initial damage range has been shortened, its headshot multiplier has been lowered, and the throw interval for the Razor attachment has been increased.

Infinity Ward said the Weapons Team is already comfortable with the changes being introduced in this update, but the team will continue watching how the weapons perform across the beta.

Frangible Rounds Take a Hit Too

Frangible Rounds have also been caught in the balance sweep.

The update reduces the duration of the Frangible slow effect by 26.8%. The magnitude of the slow has also been reduced by 21.4%.

These changes fit into Infinity Ward’s broader attempt to address weapon lethality and combat pacing during the beta. They should not be viewed as the final balance state for Modern Warfare 4, since the developer is continuing to evaluate player feedback and gameplay data.

Cachette Expands the Beta’s Multiplayer Map Pool

The multiplayer rotation now has another battleground to throw players into: Cachette.

The new map is a 6v6 core arena set inside an abandoned wine warehouse and mechanic’s garage on the outskirts of a French rail terminal.

Cachette is more than just another location to learn. Its arrival also unlocks a multiplayer feature players have been waiting for: map voting.

Infinity Ward explained that the beta needed four total maps for map voting to work effectively. With Cachette joining the rotation, the required number has been reached, allowing players to vote between available maps rather than having the map selection determined without a vote.

For players jumping into matches throughout the beta, that means the multiplayer rotation now gives them more control over what they play.

Transit 213 Gets a Visibility Boost

Transit 213 has also received a visual update designed to make certain parts of the map easier to read during matches.

Infinity Ward brightened shadowed areas and adjusted the overall color balance. The goal is to make locations that were previously difficult to see clearer during gameplay.

It is a relatively straightforward change, but better visibility can have a major impact in a fast-paced multiplayer shooter, especially during hectic firefights.

Inflation Brings Cash, HVTs and Overtime Multipliers

The other major addition is Inflation, a new multiplayer mode built around cash collection and high-value targets.

Players earn cash by eliminating opposing players. They can also take money from HVT Operators by defeating them.

The money system creates another layer of danger because the richest players in the lobby become marked HVTs. Once marked, they become targets for everyone else, giving players a reason to hunt down the biggest cash holders.

Surviving into Overtime can also pay off, with players receiving increased cash multipliers.

The core Inflation rules are simple:

  • Eliminate enemies to collect cash.
  • Defeat HVT Operators to steal the cash they are carrying.
  • The richest players become marked HVTs for everyone to hunt.
  • Survive Overtime to receive increased cash multipliers.

For players looking for something different from the standard multiplayer rhythm, Inflation adds a cash-focused objective system that can quickly turn the lobby’s biggest earners into the most wanted targets.

Daily Challenge Rerolls Give Players More Control

Progression also gets a small but useful upgrade with the introduction of Daily Challenge rerolls.

Players can now replace Daily Challenges they do not want to complete, giving them more control over the challenges they pursue during the beta.

It is a relatively small addition compared with a new map or mode, but it can make the daily progression loop less frustrating for players who get objectives that do not fit the way they want to play.

A Huge List of Modern Warfare 4 Beta Bug Fixes

The August 22 update is not just about new content and balance changes. Infinity Ward has also tackled a long list of technical problems across the beta.

One fix addresses an issue that could prevent players from starting or completing the Mobility Course.

Another fixes a strange audio problem where footstep sounds could incorrectly use wet-surface audio while players were actually moving across dry areas.

The update also fixes an issue that prevented the Global Panel from being opened using its assigned keybind.

Players should also see fewer problems involving Seeker Drones, with a disconnect issue caused by them now fixed.

Infinity Ward has addressed various errors that could occur while navigating the front-end menu, along with an issue that could trigger an error when entering the Gunsmith without a valid weapon selected.

Controller-related problems have also received attention. The update fixes various errors that could happen when switching between controllers or reconnecting them.

Another fix addresses a problem where joining a friend directly from the menu could prevent access to some settings.

The Multiplayer Lobby has also received a fix for a bug that could leave party members stuck in a looping animation.

For players using magnified optics, Infinity Ward has fixed an issue that could cause certain optics to appear opaque while aiming down sights.

Finally, a rare disconnect problem affecting Gunfight 10v10 has also been addressed.

PC players are still receiving attention from the development team as well. Infinity Ward said it is working to improve in-game error messaging and its Secure Attestation Wizard, which is designed to diagnose and fix certain problems that can prevent players from accessing the beta.

Some Beta Problems Are Still Being Investigated

The patch is big, but it does not solve everything.

Join-in-progress remains temporarily disabled on Kill Block. Infinity Ward said a bug during the round transition is responsible, and the team is actively working on a fix.

The studio is also investigating reports that cooking certain lethal equipment can cause an FPS drop. Infinity Ward said it hopes to address that issue soon.

Players can continue following the developer’s live issue tracking board for updates on problems that remain under investigation as the beta progresses.

Modern Warfare 4 Beta Schedule

The first stage of the Modern Warfare 4 beta is currently running as an Early Access period.

Early Access Beta — Weekend One: Runs through August 25 at 10:00 a.m. PT.

Open Beta — Weekend Two: Runs from August 28 through September 1 and is free for everyone.

That timing gives Infinity Ward a valuable window to study how the August 22 changes affect multiplayer during the opening Early Access weekend before the second beta weekend begins.

The developer has also made clear that the current update should not be treated as the final version of the game’s multiplayer balance or features. As more players enter the beta and Infinity Ward collects additional gameplay data, further changes to weapons, audio, maps, modes, and bugs can be expected.

For players already grinding through the beta, the message is pretty clear: the feedback loop is active. Infinity Ward is watching what players are doing, listening to the complaints, and making adjustments while the test is still underway.

The studio has encouraged players to keep sharing their feedback, clips, and gameplay videos as development continues.
