Is Pokémon Pokopia on Nintendo Switch 1?

Pokémon Pokopia is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive and is not available to purchase or download on the original Nintendo Switch. There is no Switch 1 version of the game, and no cross-gen release has been announced.

The most likely reasons come down to the technical scope of the game. Pokémon Pokopia runs at a locked 60fps on Nintendo Switch 2, and the scale of each area, the level of customisation available, and the game’s destructible environments would all require significant compromises to run on the original hardware. While games like Pokémon Legends: Z-A released across both consoles, Pokémon Pokopia represents a step forward into Switch 2 exclusivity for the franchise.

It is also worth noting that Nintendo has a natural incentive to keep certain high-profile titles exclusive to the Switch 2 in order to encourage players to upgrade. Pokémon Pokopia appears to be one of those titles.

Pokémon Pokopia launched with a day-one patch (v1.0.1) to address early issues, and the game’s first limited-time event began shortly after launch. The game has received strong early reviews, with many outlets praising its cosy and addictive gameplay, and it is already drawing comparisons to some of the best life-sim titles in recent memory.

Can You Play Pokémon Pokopia on Switch 1 Using GameShare?

Yes, there is one way Switch 1 owners can experience Pokémon Pokopia, and that is through GameShare. GameShare is a Nintendo Switch 2 feature that allows a Switch 2 owner to stream a compatible game to another Nintendo console, including the original Switch. However, both consoles need to be in the same room for the connection to work, as Switch 1 players can only join locally rather than online.

Before setting up a GameShare session, the Switch 2 host needs to have progressed far enough into the game to unlock Palette Town as an optional island and place a home there to enable fast travel and GameShare access. This means brand new players cannot host a GameShare session immediately on launch day, as some story progression in Withered Wasteland is required first.

GameShare supports one Switch 1 guest alongside the Switch 2 host, for a total of two players. If you want a full four-player session, that requires Link Play, which is only available between Switch 2 owners. Guests inherit the host’s available moves during the session, however some moves have exceptions and may not function as expected. Their overall ability to interact with the world also remains more limited compared to the full Switch 2 experience.

To use GameShare for Pokémon Pokopia, a Switch 2 owner must host the session. The Switch 1 player then joins as a guest. Here is how each side sets it up:

If You Are the Host (Switch 2)

  1. Visit the PC in Palette Town.
  2. Select Link Play.
  3. Select Invite Others to Visit.
  4. From the dropdown, select GameShare.
  5. Wait for the guest console to connect.

If You Are the Guest (Switch 1)

  1. Make sure you are in the same room as the Switch 2 host.
  2. From the Nintendo Switch 1 HOME screen, press the GameShare icon in the bottom bar (the teal rectangle with three wavelengths).
  3. Select your profile before continuing.
  4. Select Join GameShare and give the consoles a moment to connect.
  5. When your friend’s session appears with their profile icon and the Pokémon Pokopia game, press A to join.
  6. You will automatically appear in your friend’s world in Palette Town.

What Can Switch 1 Players Do in GameShare?

GameShare access is limited compared to the full Switch 2 experience. Here is a clear breakdown of what Switch 1 players can and cannot do during a GameShare session:

FeatureSwitch 1 via GameShare
Play areaPalette Town only
Terraform and use MovesYes
Moves availableYes, guests inherit host’s moves, however some moves have exceptions (e.g., Magnet Rise)
Pick up and place itemsYes
Talk to PokémonYes
Maximum guests1 Switch 1 guest (2 players total).
Full 4-player requires Link Play on Switch 2
Visit the host’s home worldNo
Use the WorkbenchNo
Access the Pokémon Center PCNo
Pokédex / Habitat DexNo
Customise your Ditto avatarNo
Keep items collected during sessionNo (items go to host’s Lost and Found at the PC)

As you can see, the GameShare experience is fairly limited. However, it still gives Switch 1 players a genuine taste of Pokémon Pokopia and a way to help a friend terraform and explore Palette Town together.

Will Pokémon Pokopia Come to Switch 1 in the Future?

There are no plans for a Switch 1 release, and given the technical demands of the game it is considered unlikely. The Switch 2 needs flagship exclusives to encourage players to upgrade, and Pokémon Pokopia is clearly positioned as one of those titles. While it is never possible to say never, all current indications point to Pokémon Pokopia remaining a Switch 2 exclusive for the foreseeable future.

Are There Similar Games on Switch 1?

If you own a Switch 1 and are not yet ready to upgrade, there are several games available on the older console that share some of Pokémon Pokopia’s DNA:

GameWhy It Is Similar
Dragon Quest Builders 2Developed by the same team behind Pokopia; the closest experience available on Switch 1
Animal Crossing: New HorizonsCosy life-sim with deep customisation and a similar island-building feel
MinecraftA clear inspiration for Pokopia’s building and resource systems; sandbox gameplay with enormous creative freedom

For Pokémon-specific experiences on Switch 1, you can also check out New Pokémon Snap, Pokémon Quest, and Pokémon Café ReMix, all of which offer a more relaxed and creature-focused approach to the franchise.

How Has Pokémon Pokopia Been Received?

Pokémon Pokopia has landed to a strong reception since its March 5, 2026 launch. Early reviews have praised the game’s cosy and addictive gameplay loop, with several outlets awarding it scores in the 9/10 range. Many critics and players have described it as one of the most compelling life-sim experiences on Nintendo hardware, and it is already being discussed as a strong Game of the Year contender for 2026. The combination of Pokémon’s beloved creature roster with deep habitat building and a charming story has clearly resonated with both longtime fans of the franchise and newcomers to the life-sim genre.
