After over a year of legal battles, leadership changes, and repeated delays, Subnautica 2 is officially heading to Early Access in May 2026 on PC and Xbox.

Few games in recent memory have had a road to release quite as turbulent as Subnautica 2. The highly anticipated sequel to one of the most beloved underwater survival games has been at the centre of a dramatic legal dispute between developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment and publisher Krafton. However, with a court ruling now in favour of the studio’s former leadership, the game is finally ready to reach players. Here is everything you need to know.

What Has Been Confirmed About the May Launch

Unknown Worlds studio head Steve Papoutsis shared an internal message with the development team confirming the Early Access timeline, which IGN subsequently published. The message reads in part:

“Over the past nine months, you have worked incredibly hard to bring Subnautica 2 close to the finish line. That effort has resulted in a game we are truly proud of, one that each of us and our partners at Krafton unanimously determined is ready for Early Access release in May.”

Papoutsis also confirmed that the team has passed Krafton’s milestone review in March 2026, clearing the way for the open development phase to begin alongside the community.

Krafton also issued a statement confirming the launch target, noting: “The team has made meaningful progress following the milestone review approved earlier this month, and has been working toward an Early Access release in May.”

However, Krafton added that it “respectfully disagrees with this week’s court ruling” and intends to explore all legal avenues. Litigation over potential damages from the fired leaders remains a separate, pending matter. So while the game is moving forward, the legal story is not entirely closed.

What Is New in Subnautica 2

The Unknown Worlds team has been actively building out the game during the extended development period. Here is a confirmed breakdown of what has been added and what players can expect in Early Access:

New Gameplay and Traversal

  • A new Tadpole submersible vehicle, designed as a modular, craftable, and upgradable vessel with attachment options. It supports co-op play and expands on the role of the original Seamoth
  • A social dive elevator feature designed to support co-op traversal between depths

Creatures and Threats

  • A new Collector Leviathan, a large intelligent predator with four tentacles capable of grabbing, crushing, swatting, and terrifying players. It re-evaluates situations in real time and reacts dynamically to player actions. The Collector Leviathan spawns in sparse plains biomes roughly 20,000 to 25,000 units away from the starting area

World and Story

  • New biomes including sparse plains environments
  • More story chapters added to the game’s narrative
  • New creatures built and integrated into the alien ocean world

Base Building and Progression

  • An overhauled procedural base-building system with adjustable module sizes, new decorative and functional room pieces, and support for shared co-op building
  • Co-op multiplayer for up to four players, confirmed as optional and designed not to disrupt single-player progression
  • New tools and upgrades for deeper customisation of gear and equipment

Understanding how Subnautica 2 ended up in this situation requires a look back at over a year of confrontations. Here is the complete timeline:

DateEvent
2021Krafton acquires Unknown Worlds Entertainment. The deal includes a promise of up to $250 million in bonuses for staff if certain performance targets are met by end of 2025
July 9, 2025Krafton delays Subnautica 2’s Early Access launch, citing a need for more biomes, vehicles, creatures, and story content
July 2025Krafton fires CEO Ted Gill, co-founder Charlie Cleveland, and technical director Max McGuire, replacing them with the executives behind Callisto Protocol. Allegations emerge that Krafton was seeking to avoid the $250 million bonus payout
Late 2025Reports emerge that Krafton CEO Changhan Kim allegedly used ChatGPT to brainstorm strategies to avoid paying the bonus and reportedly considered a corporate takeover strategy. The judge’s later ruling backed this account, noting Kim was warned against relying on AI for legal advice
2025The fired founders file a lawsuit against Krafton. Unknown Worlds as a studio files a countersuit
March 16, 2026Vice Chancellor Lori W. Will of the Delaware Chancery Court issues a ruling in case Fortis Advisors LLC v. Krafton, Inc. (C.A. No. 2025-0805-LWW). The judge orders Krafton to reinstate Ted Gill as CEO with full operational authority, extends the bonus deadline to September 15, 2026, with a further possible extension to March 15, 2027 if needed
March 18, 2026Unknown Worlds and Krafton jointly confirm Early Access in May 2026

What the Court Ruling Actually Means

The March 16, 2026 ruling delivered a significant blow to Krafton’s position. Vice Chancellor Lori W. Will found that Krafton had violated the terms of its contract with Unknown Worlds when it removed the studio’s executives. The judge noted that Krafton CEO Changhan Kim had “consulted an artificial intelligence chatbot to contrive a corporate takeover strategy,” and that Kim viewed the original bonus agreement as a professional embarrassment that made him look like a “pushover.”

Importantly, only Ted Gill was reinstated as CEO with full operational authority. The July 2025 terminations of Gill, Cleveland, and McGuire were declared “ineffective” where they infringed on Gill’s contractual rights, though Cleveland and McGuire were not explicitly restored to their prior executive positions under the ruling.

The $250 million bonus deadline has been extended to September 15, 2026, giving the team a genuine opportunity to meet the performance targets that trigger the full payout. The acquisition agreement also allows for a further extension to March 15, 2027 if needed.

Litigation over potential damages from the fired leaders remains pending as a separate matter, so the legal situation is not fully resolved. However, for now, the ruling has cleared a path for the game to move forward under its original leadership.

How to Wishlist and Access Subnautica 2 Early Access

You can add Subnautica 2 to your wishlist now via Steam on PC or via the Microsoft Store and Xbox app for Xbox Series X/S players. The Early Access version will launch on both platforms in May 2026, with a specific date still to be announced.

It is also worth noting that Subnautica 2 is expected to follow Krafton’s existing relationship with Xbox Game Pass across PC, Premium, and Ultimate tiers, though this has not been explicitly reconfirmed in the March 2026 announcements.
