Frontier Developments has officially pulled back the curtain on Planet Zoo 2, and the announce trailer is packed with far more than meets the eye. The sequel launches on 13th October 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC (Steam and Epic Games), and from the very first frame, it is clear this is a serious generational upgrade. Before diving into the hidden details, here is what you need to know about pricing and editions.

Planet Zoo 2 Editions and Pricing at a Glance

EditionPrice (USD)Price (GBP)Price (EUR)
Standard Edition$49.99£39.99€49.99
Deluxe Edition$64.99£54.99€64.99

The six Deluxe animals are: Golden Eagle, Axolotl, Longfin Batfish, Blue and Gold Fusilier, Hammerhead Shark, and Golden Lion Tamarin.

Now, onto what the trailer actually reveals when you watch it closely.

1. The Living UI System Changes How Animals Communicate Needs

One of the biggest gameplay upgrades hiding in plain sight is the new Living UI system. In Planet Zoo 2, animals now visually express their current mood rather than players having to check menus constantly. The trailer shows a Sumatran Tiger appearing lethargic, which is a direct signal to the player that something in its environment needs attention. This replaces guesswork with visible behavioural feedback, making zoo management far more intuitive.

2. The Sumatran Tiger Cubs Hint at Age-Specific Animations

Watch the tiger enclosure closely and you will notice the adult tiger grooming itself lazily while the cubs chase each other around the habitat. This is not just a cute visual flourish. It strongly suggests that younger and older animals now have different animation sets, which would add a meaningful layer of realism that Planet Zoo 1 never fully delivered. Frontier has not confirmed this explicitly, however the trailer frames it as a deliberate showcase rather than background detail.

3. Dynamic Water Physics React to Every Animal

Planet Zoo 2 introduces dynamic water that physically reacts to animals in real time. Terrestrial species walking through water now create ripples, while larger aquatic animals like the Saltwater Crocodile generate visible waves as they swim. This is a substantial technical improvement, and it goes well beyond cosmetic polish. The improved water system also benefits aquarium habitats, where the water appears crystal clear while still maintaining an authentic underwater atmosphere.

4. Aquariums Finally Arrive With Full Saltwater and Freshwater Support

Aquariums are entirely new to the Planet Zoo series and represent one of the biggest structural additions in Planet Zoo 2. The trailer confirms both saltwater and freshwater options. Spotted in the aquarium scenes are the Ocean Sunfish, Hawksbill Turtle, Yellow Tangs, and Moorish Idols. Keepers will even don scuba gear to maintain these habitats, which is a genuinely charming detail. The aquarium backdrop also features stone pillars and coral-covered rocks, signalling a strong set of dedicated scenery items built specifically for underwater enclosures.

5. The Hawksbill Turtle Represents a Conscious Conservation Choice

It would be easy to overlook the Hawksbill Sea Turtle as just another aquatic species, but Game Director Gareth Hughes specifically highlighted it as a critically endangered animal. Including it is a deliberate nod to Planet Zoo 2’s deeper conservation focus, where educating guests and reflecting real-world wildlife status plays a larger role in zoo management. Well-designed habitats now directly improve animal welfare ratings, guest experience scores, and the income needed to expand further.

6. Aviaries Use Auto-Generated Mesh Covers

Aviaries are the second major new habitat type, and they work through a clever building system. You place walls and support poles, and the game automatically generates a mesh covering between them. This removes the need to manually build custom netting, which was a time-consuming workaround in the original game. The Toco Toucan and Secretary Bird both appear in aviary enclosures during the trailer, and guests can even walk through aviaries where it is safe to do so.

7. The Secretary Bird Was the Community’s Most Requested Unadded Animal

Long-time Planet Zoo fans will immediately recognise the significance of the Secretary Bird appearing in this trailer. It was one of the most requested species throughout the entire lifespan of Planet Zoo 1 and never made it into the base game or any DLC pack. Seeing it confirmed as a launch species in Planet Zoo 2 is a direct response to years of community feedback, and the model itself looks spectacular with detailed feathers and an impressive wingspan animation.

8. A Vet’s Screen Teases the Tree Kangaroo

This one requires a sharp eye. In a brief shot featuring a vet character, the screen they are carrying displays a Tree Kangaroo. Frontier has not officially announced the Tree Kangaroo as a confirmed species yet, however placing it visibly on screen during the trailer is almost certainly an intentional hint at a future animal reveal. Keep an eye on upcoming announcements.

9. Cohabitation Returns With a Bigger Management Role

Cohabitation, which allows multiple species to share a single habitat, was present in Planet Zoo 1. However, Planet Zoo 2 expands it significantly. Frontier confirmed that cohabitation now plays a larger role in management, though the full details will be revealed in the months leading up to launch. The trailer shows multiple species sharing open spaces, particularly in scenes that appear connected to the new Wildlife Reserves feature.

10. Wildlife Reserves Let You Release Animals Beyond the Zoo

Perhaps the most ambitious new feature in Planet Zoo 2 is the addition of Wildlife Reserves. Rather than simply releasing animals into an abstract system, players can now build and customise expansive reserves across the globe where their zoo animals live in actual ecosystems. The trailer closes with African Elephants, Zebras, Blue Wildebeest, and Secretary Birds gathered around a waterhole with no enclosure barriers in sight. This feature ties directly into the game’s conservation focus and gives Franchise mode a meaningful long-term goal.

11. Four Brand-New Scenery Themes Join Five Returning Ones

The trailer showcases Southeast Asian-inspired temple builds and other new architectural styles, confirming that four entirely new scenery themes are coming to Planet Zoo 2 alongside five returning themes from the original game. Frontier has not revealed all four new themes yet, however the trailer prominently features what looks like an aquatic-themed path in a teal recolour, Southeast Asian temple pieces, and leaf canopy structures on a viewing gallery. That gives builders a much broader palette to work with from day one.

12. Improved Foliage and Terrain Brushes Are Officially Confirmed

One of the most common frustrations in Planet Zoo 1 was the time-consuming process of placing individual foliage items and shaping terrain. Planet Zoo 2 officially confirms new foliage and terrain brushes, allowing players to make large-scale changes to zoos and Wildlife Reserves far more efficiently. The trailer shows improved mushroom details growing on tree trunks, better dirt and mulch textures, and denser plant environments overall. These are small details in isolation, however together they signal a much smoother building experience.

Final Thoughts

Planet Zoo 2 is turning out to be a genuine leap forward rather than a simple content refresh. The combination of aquariums, aviaries, Wildlife Reserves, dynamic water physics, the Living UI system, and expanded cohabitation mechanics all point to a developer that has listened closely to its community. The game launches on 13th October 2026 on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC. You can pre-order through the Microsoft Store, PlayStation Store, Steam, or the Epic Games Store now to secure the Bonus Content Pack at launch.
