Alright, so Santa Monica Studio just dropped some news that a lot of us have been hoping for a long time. There’s a brand-new God of War game focused on Kratos in the works, and it’s tied straight into what’s happening in God of War: Laufey.
Cory Barlog, the studio’s creative head, spilled the beans during their panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026. However, he kept things pretty vague on the stuff we all really want to know. So for now: no release window, no platform, no official title, and zero word yet on which mythology or setting they’re heading into next.
Still, he gave us a decent sense of how it all links up. He called the new project “a continuation of what came before,” but made it clear they’re not just rehashing old ground. They’re building forward. And he specifically called out Phranque as a character who’s been in the mix since the very beginning, which makes it feel like the studio’s still got a few surprises up its sleeve as this whole world keeps growing.

What did the Studio Reveal About the New God of War Project at Comic Con 2026?
Ever since Laufey put the spotlight on Kratos’ late wife Faye, fans have been wondering what that means for the big guy himself. Back in June, the studio’s official X account already said there are “always going to be Kratos games” and that they’ve still got plenty of his story left to tell.
Barlog basically repeated that at Comic-Con, and director Ariel Lawrence was even more direct. She basically said they just can’t “not” keep telling stories about Kratos. His part in all this is nowhere near done.

So where does that leave Laufey and Kratos right now? Laufey is locked in for February 16, 2027, and it’s a pretty big shift, as for the first time Kratos isn’t the main character. The story picks up right after Faye’s death and runs alongside the events of the 2018 game and Ragnarök. She wakes up in the Everywhen, this afterlife for gods, and has to fight to protect the plans she made for Kratos and Atreus. She’s up against gods from other pantheons in a place packed with dangerous magic.
Deborah Ann Woll (who voices Faye) called her a reluctant hero at the panel. Christopher Judge, who’s been Kratos since 2018, talked about how much Faye shaped who he becomes (all that hope and forgiveness stuff from the last two games). Judge is back in a supporting role, Jack Quaid is the talking cosmic cube Phranque, and Perlina Lau is the enchanted ribbon spirit, Rue. Both of these companions are doing a lot more than just hanging around. They’re big for combat, getting around, and the story itself.
Early reactions to Laufey have been mixed, though. Some fans are loving the combat and how it looks. Others aren’t totally sold on the simpler gameplay in the opening or the fact that Kratos isn’t front and center. That pushback is probably why they felt the need to confirm the next Kratos chapter at Comic-Con. It reads like a “don’t worry, we’ve still got you” move as much as a straight announcement. And the studio also confirmed Laufey is getting a physical disc release, which is nice given everything going on with Sony and discs right now.

On top of all this, they’re still working on a remake of the original Greek trilogy. It’s early days, no date yet, and we don’t even know if it’ll be three separate games or one big package. And don’t forget God of War: Sons of Sparta dropped earlier this year, that little 2D spin-off about young Kratos training in Sparta with Deimos.
Other genres are getting their own resurgence moments this year too, including a shmup that’s been generating a surprising amount of buzz. To see the details, read our article Truxton Extreme Is Almost Here, And This Might Be The Shmup Revival We Actually Needed
So yeah, there’s a lot to keep an eye on. Laufey next February, this new Kratos game that’s directly connected to her story, the Greek trilogy remake still taking shape, and the feeling that the studio is just expanding this world in every direction at once.
