Minecraft Is Getting Its First New Dimension in Over 14 Years — Meet The Sift

Minecraft is finally opening a door that has been closed for more than a decade.

Following the latest Minecraft LIVE presentation, Mojang has officially revealed The Sift, an entirely new dimension that will first debut in Minecraft Dungeons II before making its way into Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition in 2027. And yeah, this is a pretty huge deal for anyone who has spent years exploring every corner of the Overworld, Nether and End.

The Sift will become Minecraft’s first new dimension in more than 14 years, giving the game a fourth major destination. Players can get their first playable look at the mysterious world when Minecraft Dungeons II launches on September 29, 2026, although Mojang is keeping many details about its eventual main-game arrival secret for now.

The Sift Becomes Minecraft’s Fourth Dimension

For years, Minecraft’s world has revolved around three dimensions: the Overworld, Nether and End. The Sift is about to break that formula.

Mojang confirmed during Minecraft LIVE that The Sift will eventually become part of the main Minecraft experience. The official Minecraft recap describes it as the game’s first new dimension in over 14 years, meaning players are about to get a completely new destination to explore.

Xbox Wire summed up the reveal with a simple message:

“We’ve visited the Overworld, the Nether, and the End. Now, prepare yourself for a journey to the Sift.”

But The Sift isn’t being treated as just another map with a different colour palette.

Mojang is introducing it with its own visual identity, mobs, environmental hazards and rules. The dimension has its own ecosystem and environmental behaviour, meaning players will need to learn how this strange world works rather than simply treating it like another Minecraft biome.

And that’s where things get particularly interesting.

While Minecraft prepares to expand into a whole new dimension, PlayStation Plus subscribers have their own countdown running on a batch of catalog exits. For more, check out our report on PlayStation Plus October 2026: Kingdom Come Deliverance II Arrives as 8 Games Prepare to Leave.

What Is The Sift in Minecraft Dungeons II?

The Sift is introduced early in Minecraft Dungeons II after strange events begin disrupting the natural order of the Overworld.

According to Xbox Wire, unusual occurrences begin spreading through the world, new enemy types appear and souls start flying through the environment. Those events eventually lead players toward the mysterious new dimension.

The Sift operates according to its own rules and comes with a colourful visual style unlike the familiar Minecraft dimensions. Its creatures can either help or threaten players, while dangerous blocks and environmental conditions can completely change how exploration works.

One of its most unusual features is the changing tides within The Sift. These shifting conditions can affect players and the characters around them, making the environment itself part of the gameplay rather than simply acting as background scenery.

Mojang design director Laura De Llorens discussed the development of the dimension during the Official Xbox Podcast.

“We set off to make a new dimension, and it has been a very involved process.”

She also explained that the team wanted The Sift to feel genuinely unfamiliar:

“It’s just its own independent thing that you just have never encountered before.”

That idea extends to the creatures living there. De Llorens explained that The Sift has its own independent ecosystem, with creatures adapted to surviving in the environment instead of simply being familiar Minecraft mobs dropped into a new location.

Some of those creatures can even thrive under conditions that are harmful to the player while being naturally adapted to living there.

So, entering The Sift won’t simply mean learning where to find resources. Players will also need to understand the ecosystem and environmental rules that make the dimension tick.

New Biomes, Mobs and Dangerous Blocks Are Waiting

The Sift isn’t a single environment.

Mojang has already confirmed multiple biomes, including Meadows and Carapace, while additional areas remain hidden ahead of Minecraft Dungeons II‘s launch.

That secrecy appears intentional. Rather than revealing the entire dimension before players can experience it themselves, Xbox Wire says other areas are being kept secret for players to discover.

The same goes for its creatures.

The Sift contains new mobs that can function as companions as well as hostile creatures. Their connection to the dimension’s ecosystem is part of what makes them different from simply reskinned or relocated Minecraft enemies.

Then there are the hazardous new blocks.

Combined with The Sift’s changing environmental conditions, these hazards mean players will have to pay attention to where they move and how the world around them behaves.

That makes The Sift feel less like a traditional destination and more like an environment players have to learn.

Not every big reveal is intentional — Rockstar recently let slip some GTA 6 map details it hadn’t meant to show. For more, dive into our story on Rockstar Accidentally Reveals Hidden GTA 6 Map Locations, Then Quickly Removes Them.

Minecraft Dungeons II Is Your First Trip Into The Sift

If you want to experience The Sift before it reaches the main Minecraft game, Minecraft Dungeons II is where the journey begins.

The game launches on September 29, 2026, and introduces The Sift through mysterious rifts appearing throughout its interconnected world. Players who encounter these rifts can be transported into the new dimension.

The sequel expands the original Minecraft Dungeons formula with a new action RPG adventure featuring additional weapons, enemies, gear and locations.

Unlike the original game’s primarily level-based structure, Dungeons II introduces an interconnected world. That structure gives The Sift a natural role in the adventure, with the mysterious rifts acting as gateways into somewhere completely unfamiliar.

Mojang had already teased the concept through Minecraft Dungeons II‘s gameplay reveal, while the August gameplay trailer confirmed that stepping through these rifts would take players into an entirely new dimension.

That makes Dungeons II the first practical introduction to The Sift’s aesthetic, creatures, blocks, biomes and environmental mechanics before Mojang brings the concept into the main Minecraft game.

The Sift Is Coming to Java and Bedrock in 2027

Here’s the part Minecraft players have been waiting for.

The Sift is coming to Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition in 2027.

Mojang has confirmed the arrival, but that’s where the confirmed information currently ends in several important areas.

The company has not revealed the exact release date, how players will access The Sift in the main game, or its complete gameplay mechanics.

Xbox Wire has specifically noted that Mojang isn’t currently revealing too much about how players will reach the dimension in Minecraft or exactly how the Java and Bedrock version will differ from what players experience in Minecraft Dungeons II.

An early in-development glimpse has been shown, but Mojang is saving more information for future Minecraft LIVE presentations.

So players shouldn’t assume that every feature from Dungeons II will transfer directly into Java and Bedrock.

The dimension itself is confirmed. Its final implementation is not.

That distinction matters because several major questions remain unanswered: How will players reach The Sift? Which resources will exist there? Which mobs, if any, will appear in the main Minecraft version? How will its environmental mechanics interact with survival gameplay and building?

For now, Mojang isn’t saying.

Minecraft Dungeons II Launches on Six Major Platforms

Players won’t have to wait until 2027 just to see what The Sift looks like.

Minecraft Dungeons II launches on September 29 for:

  • Xbox Series X|S
  • Xbox on PC
  • Steam
  • PlayStation 5
  • Nintendo Switch
  • Nintendo Switch 2

The game will also be included with Xbox Game Pass at launch.

Xbox Play Anywhere support additionally allows players to play across supported console and PC versions without purchasing separate copies.

Microsoft’s Game Pass announcement confirms Minecraft Dungeons II as a day-one Game Pass release on September 29, giving subscribers access across supported Game Pass platforms.

So if you’ve been waiting to see what this mysterious fourth dimension actually feels like, the first opportunity arrives much sooner than the 2027 Minecraft update.

Mojang Is Still Hiding Some Major Secrets

Even after the Minecraft LIVE reveal, there is a lot we still don’t know.

Mojang has confirmed Meadows and Carapace, but other areas inside The Sift remain secret. The company also hasn’t explained exactly how players will access the dimension in Java and Bedrock or how that implementation will differ from Dungeons II.

Xbox Wire puts the current situation this way:

“Suffice it to say, if you want a sneak peek at how the Sift will work, the best way to find out more is to play Dungeons II, which will give us a taste of mobs, blocks, and biomes.”

Future Minecraft LIVE presentations are expected to reveal more about The Sift and its eventual arrival in the main game.

For now, Dungeons II is effectively the first chapter.

Speaking of highly anticipated worlds, one Red Dead Redemption star has weighed in on how his character stacks up against GTA 6’s new lead. For more, read our feature on Roger Clark Breaks Silence on GTA 6’s Arthur Morgan Comparisons: “Hard to Say Until We Actually Get a Go”.

Minecraft’s World Is About to Get Much Bigger

Minecraft has spent more than a decade with the Overworld, Nether and End forming the foundation of its dimensional exploration.

Now there’s a fourth.

The Sift represents Minecraft’s first new dimension in more than 14 years, and Mojang is introducing it through Minecraft Dungeons II before bringing it to Java and Bedrock in 2027.

The immediate date to remember is September 29, 2026, when Minecraft Dungeons II launches and players can begin discovering the first rifts leading into The Sift.

The bigger change comes in 2027, when that mysterious world finally enters Minecraft itself.

For now, Mojang is keeping the door only partly open. We know The Sift exists. We know it has new biomes, mobs, dangerous blocks, shifting environmental conditions and its own ecosystem. We know Meadows and Carapace are among its confirmed biomes. But exactly how this fourth dimension will work inside Minecraft Java and Bedrock remains one of the game’s biggest unanswered questions.

And honestly, that’s probably the fun part.

Disclaimer: Details about The Sift’s Minecraft Java and Bedrock implementation, including its access method, exact release date and some gameplay mechanics, have not yet been fully revealed by Mojang. Information may change as further Minecraft LIVE announcements are made.
