Metal Gear Solid 4 on Switch Appears to Lose Its Iconic PS3 Joke

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is finally escaping its nearly two-decade PlayStation 3 prison, but Nintendo Switch players may be getting a slightly different version of one of the most memorable Metal Gear games ever made.

Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 launches on August 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. The collection is a huge deal for fans because it marks the first official modern release of Metal Gear Solid 4, which originally launched as a PlayStation 3 exclusive in 2008.

But before players even get their hands on it, fans have spotted something seriously interesting in Konami’s official online manuals. The Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 versions of MGS4 appear to have removed a PlayStation 3 console that was visible in the original game.

And considering what that PS3 represents, this tiny visual change could have a surprisingly big impact on one of the game’s classic fourth-wall-breaking jokes.

Wait… where did the PS3 go?

If you’ve played Metal Gear Solid 4, you may remember the live camera feed showing Sunny aboard the Nomad. During the original PS3 version, a PlayStation 3 can be seen sitting on a table in the background.

That little console wasn’t just random decoration. It was part of one of MGS4‘s most memorable moments, where the game openly acknowledges the hardware you’re playing it on.

Now, fans comparing the platform-specific manuals for Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 have noticed something unusual.

The PlayStation 3 appears to remain visible in the screenshots representing the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC versions. However, screenshots for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 versions appear to show the PS3 missing.

In its place are what appear to be GA-KO duck figures, another recurring visual gag and motif from the Metal Gear Solid series.

The discovery was first noticed by fans on Reddit and was subsequently reported by outlets including Nintendo Everything, GoNintendo, and GamesRadar+.

That immediately raises the obvious question: why remove the PS3 specifically from the Nintendo versions?

Right now, we don’t have an official explanation from Konami. More importantly, the game has not yet launched, meaning the manual screenshots are currently the evidence behind the observation rather than confirmation from the playable Nintendo versions.

So, if you’re already imagining a completely rewritten MGS4, don’t. There is no evidence that the game has been substantially cut or changed on Switch.

This appears to be a small platform-specific background adjustment.

But the location of that adjustment makes it much more interesting.

The missing console could mess with one of MGS4’s best jokes

Here’s where things get very Metal Gear.

One of Metal Gear Solid 4‘s most famous fourth-wall-breaking moments references the disc-swapping mechanic from the original Metal Gear Solid. Otacon realizes that the game is running on PlayStation 3 hardware and points out that the console uses Blu-ray discs, meaning players don’t need to swap discs.

His iconic line is:

“Oh wait! We’re on PlayStation 3! It’s a Blu-ray Disc. Dual-layered, too – no need to swap.”

For longtime fans, it’s exactly the kind of ridiculous, self-aware humor that makes Metal Gear Solid feel like Metal Gear Solid.

The problem is pretty obvious now.

If the Nintendo versions really have removed the PS3 from the Nomad, what happens when Otacon starts talking about it?

At the moment, nobody has confirmed that Konami changed the dialogue.

The manual screenshots only appear to show the visual change. There has been no confirmation that Otacon’s famous line has been rewritten, removed, or replaced in the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 versions.

It’s therefore possible that the dialogue remains completely intact.

And honestly, that could make the scene even more bizarre. Otacon could still reference the PlayStation 3 while the console itself is no longer visible in the background.

Until players can actually play the Nintendo versions, however, that’s speculation.

The important distinction is that the PS3’s apparent removal is based on official manual screenshots, while any dialogue change remains unverified.

That means fans shouldn’t treat the altered joke as confirmed just yet.

MGS4 is finally coming to modern platforms

Whatever happens with the missing PS3 reference, the bigger story is that Metal Gear Solid 4 is finally becoming available beyond its original hardware.

For nearly two decades, Guns of the Patriots remained tied to the PlayStation 3. While players could still experience the original game on PS3 and through various imperfect emulation options, there was no official modern release.

That changes with Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2.

The collection includes Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, the HD Collection version of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and the bonus title Metal Gear: Ghost Babel. It also comes with digital extras including databases, screenplays and master books, plus a soundtrack.

Konami has confirmed the collection for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Steam, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2, with the release scheduled for August 27, 2026.

The US price is $49.99.

For Nintendo players specifically, this is also a major moment because Metal Gear Solid 4 is arriving on a Nintendo console for the first time. The official Master Collection manual confirms dedicated versions for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 alongside PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam.

So while the missing PS3 is definitely an intriguing detail, it shouldn’t overshadow what this release actually represents.

MGS4 is finally leaving the PS3 behind.

The Switch version may have its own little Metal Gear mystery

The apparent PS3 replacement is fascinating precisely because it seems so small.

Konami isn’t removing Metal Gear Solid 4. The game remains the centerpiece of Master Collection Vol. 2, and there is currently no indication that this particular visual adjustment represents a major content cut.

Instead, we’re looking at what appears to be a platform-specific alteration involving a background object that happens to be connected to one of the game’s most famous jokes.

And that leaves one question hanging over the August 27 launch:

Will Otacon still make the PlayStation 3 Blu-ray joke on Switch?

If he does, players may be looking at a slightly awkward version of the original gag. If Konami changed the line as well, then fans will have another small piece of MGS4 history to compare across platforms.

For now, though, the responsible answer is simple: the Nintendo versions appear to remove the PS3 from the relevant background scene based on the official manual screenshots, but the playable game and Otacon’s dialogue have not yet independently confirmed the change.

That makes this less of a confirmed controversy and more of a fascinating pre-release mystery.

And with Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 arriving on August 27, we won’t have to wait much longer to find out what actually happened to that little PS3.

The apparent removal of the PlayStation 3 model in the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 versions of Metal Gear Solid 4 has not been independently confirmed in the playable game as of publication. Any changes to platform-specific dialogue, including Otacon’s Blu-ray line, also remain unverified until the collection is released. Details may change.
