Directive 8020 is Supermassive Games’ latest entry in The Dark Pictures Anthology, and saving every crew member requires careful decisions across all eight episodes. Anders is one of the trickier characters to keep alive because her survival depends on a chain of choices that begins as early as Episode 2. Here is everything you need to know to make sure Anders makes it off the Cassiopeia.
Can You Save Anders in Directive 8020?
Yes, Anders can survive the entire game. However, her fate connects directly to a power system decision you make in Episode 2 and a split-second rescue choice in Episode 5. If you miss either of these, keeping her alive becomes significantly harder. The good news is that with the right decisions in place, Cooper steps in as a backup if you fail the rescue minigame, meaning Anders has more than one lifeline. That said, saving the full crew including Anders is genuinely challenging on a first playthrough, so do not be discouraged if things go wrong the first time around.
The Decision That Sets Everything Up: Episode 2
Before Anders is ever in danger, you need to plant the groundwork in Episode 2: Best Laid Plans. During the Power Games scene, you play as Young and face a terminal that asks you to cut power from one of two systems.
| Choice | Effect |
| Deactivate Fire Control | Landing Computer stays active, which sets up a smoother path for saving Anders in Episode 5 |
| Deactivate Landing Computer | Fire Control stays active, but this makes saving both Anders and Mitchell significantly harder later |
The recommended choice is to deactivate Fire Control. This keeps the Landing Computer online and gives you the better survival path when the crisis hits in Episode 5. However, note that this means the fire suppression system will be offline during the Episode 5 explosion, which affects how Mitchell’s situation plays out.
Additionally, during the Suspicions scene in Episode 2, when Eisele chats with Stafford, choose Accuse and then Contemplate. This matters later when you need to identify the real Eisele at the scanner in Episode 6.
Saving Anders in Episode 5: Under Pressure
Episode 5 is where Anders faces her first real threat. During the Ice and Fire scene, an explosion causes the lab to fill with freezing air while Anders is inside with the alien specimen. At the same time, Mitchell is caught in the fire at the fuel pump area. Young arrives and cannot save both, so you have to choose.
To save Anders, select Save Anders when the choice appears.
From here, the outcome splits depending on what you did in Episode 2:
- If you deactivated Fire Control in Episode 2 and choose to save Anders, you will face a more straightforward path to rescuing her. This is the recommended route and gives Anders the best chance of surviving in good condition.
- If you deactivated the Landing Computer in Episode 2 and choose to save Anders, the minigame to unlock the door becomes the harder path. If you complete it successfully, Anders survives. If you fail, Cooper steps in and saves Anders, though she will come out of it injured due to the extreme cold.
So the cleanest path to saving Anders is to deactivate Fire Control in Episode 2 and then select Save Anders in Episode 5.
Finding the Real Anders in Episode 7
Episode 7 introduces one of the trickiest Anders moments in the game. During the Search Party scene on the surface of Tau Ceti F, the group gets separated and Anders ends up alone. The mimics will try to lead you toward a fake Anders, so you need to track down the real one.
Follow these steps to find the real Anders:
- Use your comms system to message Anders and follow her directions
- When you reach a fork in the path, go right
- Follow the path toward the cave with stalactites on the ceiling
- You will find the real Anders a short distance ahead in this area
The fake Anders will try to contact you through an unknown channel. Ignore that contact and trust only the existing Anders contact on your PDA. If you follow the right path and push forward through the cave, you will reunite with the real Anders and keep her safe.
Keeping Anders Alive Through Episode 8
Episode 8 is where the majority of the game’s 44 potential deaths are concentrated, and Anders is still at risk during the final escape. The key to protecting her in this episode comes down almost entirely to passing every QTE without missing a single prompt.
The critical moments where Anders can be lost in Episode 8 include:
- Redirect, Atrium, and Mess Hall: You face the Eisele mimic across these three areas. Getting caught during any of these sequences can result in crew deaths, so move carefully and stay alert
- Tentacle Flail and Creeper: These are rapid-fire QTE sequences during the escape. Failing here puts multiple crew members at risk simultaneously
- Teardown: When the monster attempts to crush characters with a ceiling beam, pass the QTE to prevent further casualties and keep the group intact for the final push
- Seal the Exits: This is one of the most critical QTEs in the entire game. Failing it means everyone on the ship dies, so treat this prompt as the highest priority moment in the escape sequence
The escape sequence in Episode 8 moves quickly, so treat every button prompt as a priority from start to finish.

Using Turning Points If Things Go Wrong
If things go wrong during your playthrough, Directive 8020 includes the Turning Point feature, which lets you rewind to key decision moments. On Explorer Mode, you can access the Turning Point menu at any time. On Survivor Mode, the menu only unlocks after you finish the game for the first time. So if Anders dies on your first run, you can go back and correct the relevant choices without starting over completely.
Saving the full crew on a first playthrough is genuinely difficult, and many players will need a second attempt or the Turning Point system to get everyone home. Follow the steps above and Anders will be standing alongside the rest of the crew when the Cassiopeia finally escapes Tau Ceti F.
