What started as a few illegal fireworks near a Washington highway just after midnight on July 4 has become a criminal investigation involving a death, destroyed homes, thousands of acres of scorched land and an 18-year-old man accused of triggering one of Douglas Countyโs most destructive wildfires of 2026. Nearly two months after the flames erupted, investigators arrested Kent resident Michael Yakimov, alleging he was the primary suspect responsible for igniting the Chelan Hills Fire.
The wildfire ultimately burned nearly 10,000 acres, destroyed more than 100 structures, including 19 homes, and claimed the life of 69-year-old Robert M. Lister, who was trying to evacuate when his vehicle went off the roadway and was consumed by flames. Authorities say five other adults allegedly involved in the illegal fireworks activity are also being pursued, with arrest warrants being sought.

Chelan Hills Fire erupted after midnight and quickly became a major Washington wildfire
The first signs of trouble came shortly after midnight on July 4, 2026, near U.S. Highway 97 at approximately mile marker 233.
According to the Douglas County Sheriffโs Office, deputies responded to a reported brush fire at about 12:06 a.m. The Washington State Patrol separately reported that the fire began at approximately 12:05 a.m., when the blaze was initially estimated at around 400 acres and was already growing rapidly.
The situation escalated quickly. By approximately 4:30 a.m., authorities had requested state fire mobilization as the flames threatened homes, infrastructure and public safety.
What followed was a massive wildfire that would eventually affect the Chelan Hills and McNeil Canyon areas and force widespread evacuation activity.

Investigators say illegal fireworks sparked the deadly Chelan Hills Fire
According to Sheriff Tyler Caille, detectives determined that a group of people were setting off illegal fireworks around the time the wildfire began.
The people investigators were looking into were reportedly associated with vehicles in the area. Authorities allege that fireworks were being launched from the back of a truck when one of them landed in roadside vegetation.
That single ignition, investigators say, started the brush fire that eventually spread across thousands of acres.
The Washington State Patrolโs initial July 4 announcement listed the cause as under investigation. The investigation by Douglas County detectives continued for nearly two months before authorities announced a significant breakthrough.
On September 2, detectives developed probable cause to arrest Michael Yakimov, an 18-year-old from Kent, Washington, as the primary suspect responsible for igniting the fire.
Detectives traveled from Douglas County to Kent, located Yakimov and arrested him without incident.
The investigation had already involved extensive evidence gathering. Reporting surrounding the September 3 news conference said authorities had executed more than 50 search warrants while working to establish what happened and identify those allegedly involved.
The case had also attracted a significant public-information effort. Douglas County and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives offered a combined $30,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of those responsible.
Douglas County contributed $25,000, while the ATF contributed $5,000.

Michael Yakimov faces manslaughter, arson and assault allegations
Following his September 2 arrest, Yakimov was transported to Douglas County and booked into the Chelan County Regional Justice Center.
The allegations recorded against him include four categories of felony charges:
- Manslaughter in the First Degree
- Arson in the First Degree
- Malicious Mischief in the First Degree
- Assault in the Third Degree โ Six Counts
The six assault counts are connected to the broader consequences of the fire, according to the charges announced by the sheriffโs office.
The accusations are serious, but they remain allegations. Yakimov is legally presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty in court.
And he is not the only person investigators are looking for.
Authorities say five other adults were involved in the illegal fireworks activity and are seeking arrest warrants for them. Sheriff Caille described those individuals as being โcomplicit with the same crimes.โ
The sheriff has urged those remaining suspects to surrender rather than wait for investigators to find them.
โwe will come find you.โ
The investigation remains active as authorities work to establish the individual roles allegedly played by each person.

Robert Lister was killed while trying to evacuate the wildfire
Behind the criminal charges is the death of a 69-year-old Washington resident.
The victim was identified as Robert M. Lister, an Orondo resident whose death became one of the most devastating consequences of the Chelan Hills Fire.
The Douglas County Coronerโs Office confirmed Listerโs identity on August 31.
His final moments unfolded during the evacuation from the wildfire.
On July 5, deputies followed up on a report involving a missing resident from the affected area. Investigators eventually located a vehicle that had gone off the roadway and was subsequently consumed by the fire.
Inside the vehicle, authorities discovered human remains.
Those remains were later positively identified as Lister.
According to the sheriffโs office, Lister died after his vehicle went off the roadway during the evacuation and was consumed by the flames.
His death transformed the investigation from a case involving property destruction and a massive wildfire into one involving a fatality and potential criminal liability for those accused of starting the blaze.

Listerโs family says the arrest gives them a chance to begin healing
During the September 3 news conference, Listerโs family was given an opportunity to address what had happened.
At the familyโs request, Detective Jacqui Williams, who has served as a liaison between investigators and Listerโs family, read a prepared statement.
The family thanked firefighters, law enforcement officers, first responders and everyone else who helped during the disaster and the recovery effort.
They also said the arrest gave them a measure of closure and allowed them to begin moving forward following Listerโs death.
โRobโs life was taken far too soon, and he will continue to be loved, missed and remembered by all,โ the family statement read.
For Listerโs loved ones, however, the arrest represents only one step in dealing with a loss that followed a rapidly spreading fire.

Sheriff Tyler Caille calls the wildfire completely preventable
Sheriff Tyler Caille did not describe the Chelan Hills Fire as an unavoidable natural disaster.
Instead, he sharply criticised what investigators say happened before the blaze began, pointing to the alleged use of illegal fireworks as the action that set the chain of events in motion.
During the September 3 news conference, Caille said:
โThis is complete recklessness that led to billions of dollars of loss, loss of Mr. Listerโs life and, unfortunately, everybody involved in that is going to have to pay those consequences.โ
The sheriff also described the fire as completely preventable.
The consequences, authorities say, extended far beyond the original ignition point. Homeowners lost properties, firefighters and emergency responders faced dangerous conditions, and communities in the Chelan Hills and McNeil Canyon areas experienced widespread disruption.
At the same time, Caille highlighted the communityโs response to the disaster.
โDouglas County is a county that is resilient, and we strive to stay together and stand behind each other in times of tragedy.โ

Investigation took nearly two months and involved dozens of searches
The September arrest came almost two months after the wildfire first erupted.
The investigation was complicated by the sheer scale of the fire, the number of vehicles and people potentially connected to the events surrounding its ignition, and the destruction caused by the flames.
Detectives continued collecting evidence and conducting searches while attempting to determine exactly who was involved and what each person allegedly did.
More than 50 search warrants were reportedly involved in the investigation.
By September 2, detectives said they had developed sufficient probable cause to identify Yakimov as the primary suspect. Investigators then traveled to Kent and arrested him at his residence without incident.
The case is not over.
Five other people whom authorities say were involved in the illegal fireworks activity remain under investigation, and arrest warrants are being sought.
That means investigators are still working to establish the alleged role of each person and determine how the events of July 4 unfolded.

Chelan Hills Fire came during a severe 2026 Washington wildfire season
The Chelan Hills Fire was also part of a much larger wildfire crisis across Washington.
By early September, wildfires had burned more than 1,125 square miles, or approximately 2,914 square kilometers, across the state, according to the Associated Press.
The Chelan Hills Fire was among the major blazes that caused extensive property damage and displacement.
Another major Washington wildfire, the Old Trails Fire in Spokane, also resulted in criminal charges. Authorities charged a man in connection with that fire, which was among three fires in the area that collectively burned more than 850 buildings and destroyed entire neighbourhoods.
That suspect was also accused in connection with four smaller fires from 2025 and 2026.
The separate investigations have highlighted the potentially enormous criminal and financial consequences when human activity is alleged to have caused destructive wildfires.

Community recovery continues as authorities pursue five more suspects
Even as the criminal case moves forward, recovery from the Chelan Hills Fire continues.
Residents in the Chelan Hills and McNeil Canyon areas have been left dealing with destroyed homes, damaged property and the wider disruption caused by the wildfire.
The Douglas County Sheriffโs Office has acknowledged the long-term impact and said it remains committed to providing information as the investigation develops.
Douglas County Commissioner Marc Straub also praised investigators and the wider community for their response.
โOn behalf of the Douglas County Commissioners, we express our deepest gratitude to the Sheriff, our detectives, and all of the men and women of the Douglas County Sheriffโs Office. Their professionalism, determination, and care have resulted in accountability.โ
Straub also thanked state and federal partners, volunteers, first responders, nonprofits and neighbours who assisted people affected by the fire.
For Listerโs family, the arrest of Yakimov marks one moment of accountability following a tragedy that began with an alleged act involving illegal fireworks.
For investigators, however, the work continues. Yakimovโs criminal case will proceed through the court system, while authorities continue pursuing the five other individuals they believe were involved.
The Chelan Hills Fire started as a rapidly spreading brush fire shortly after midnight. It grew into a nearly 10,000-acre disaster, destroyed more than 100 structures, killed a man attempting to escape the flames and left communities facing a long recovery.
Now, nearly two months later, the investigation has produced its first major arrestโbut authorities say there are still unanswered questions and five more people they want to find.
