The South Korean comedy world is mourning the sudden loss of Jung Se Hyup, who passed away on October 6 at the age of 41. Known for his infectious humor and memorable performances, Jung captured the hearts of audiences as the beloved dog-character “Chow Chow” on SBS’s People Looking for a Laugh.
Sources report that Jung was spending time with a friend when he experienced sudden chest pain and difficulty breathing. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, efforts to save him were unsuccessful. An acquaintance shared, “He was speaking with the doctor when he suffered cardiac arrest. The medical team did everything they could, but he could not be revived.”
The news is particularly poignant given Jung’s past health struggles. In 2015, after a grueling five-year battle with leukemia and a bone marrow transplant, he was declared fully recovered. His courage and optimism during that difficult period inspired countless fans and fellow entertainers alike.
After a period away from the spotlight, Jung made a celebrated return to comedy in April 2024, appearing on Gag Concert and delighting audiences once again with his vibrant performances. His unexpected passing leaves a void in the comedy community, where he was admired not only for his talent but also for his warmth and resilience.
Fellow entertainers, including broadcaster Hong Hyun-hee, expressed their sorrow online, remembering Jung’s generosity and playful spirit. “I am heartbroken by this unbelievable news. May you rest in a place without pain,” she wrote.
Jung Se Hyup’s funeral is being held at Hanbaeksan Funeral Home in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, with the burial scheduled at Hanbaeksan Memorial Park on the morning of October 9. Fans and colleagues continue to share their condolences, celebrating the life of a man who brought laughter and hope to so many.
