Filming was either already underway or set to begin imminently around the time of the March 31, 2026 casting announcement.

What Is ‘I Am the Sinner’ About?

The series is a crime action noir set in 1980s South Korea, during the height of the urban redevelopment frenzy that swept through the country ahead of the 1988 Seoul Olympics. It centres on two men whose lives collide violently in a lawless city.

The story follows Paeng-i, a mysterious and ruthless figure who embodies the era’s greed and corruption, and Saeng Dak, a survival-driven gang member who accepts a once-in-a-lifetime offer that upends everything he knows. Their collision sets off a chain of betrayal, greed, and merciless action that drives the series.

The original webtoon of the same name, serialised on Kakao Webtoon, earned acclaim for its dense story structure, nuanced character portrayals, and narratives that tap directly into human instincts. The series adaptation now carries significant expectations from fans of both the source material and the confirmed cast.

Who Is Playing Who?

Park Seo Joon as Paeng-i

Park Seo Joon takes on his most villainous role to date as Paeng-i, described as a figure who “concentrates the desires of the era” and functions as the moral centre of gravity pulling everyone else into chaos. He is a mysterious man who surfaces in a district overtaken by redevelopment activity, enters the drug business, and systematically draws both Saeng Dak and Bok Hee into his orbit.

Park Seo Joon is known for his work across genres including the drama Gyeongseong Creature, the film Concrete Utopia, and the series Surely Tomorrow. However, Paeng-i represents a sharp departure from his previous roles. He addressed this directly, saying: “This is a character and story I’ve been waiting for. It’s a project that naturally sparks ambition as an actor. Through the role of Paeng-i, I hope to present a new side of myself.”

Uhm Tae Goo as Saeng Dak

Uhm Tae Goo plays Saeng Dak, a Bukgu gang member who betrays his organisation and accepts Paeng-i’s life-changing proposal. The betrayal costs him everything he had built, and the series tracks how his life unravels from that moment forward.

Uhm Tae Goo previously demonstrated his commanding screen presence in the drama Light Shop, Woman Who Plays, and the film Night in Paradise. On joining ‘I Am the Sinner’, he said: “There are a variety of characters, and the script is very engaging. I feel both nervous and excited, and I will do my best during filming.”

Jo Hye Joo as Bok Hee

Jo Hye Joo portrays Bok Hee, Paeng-i’s first love and a key supplier in the drug trade. She becomes entangled with him again through the business and proceeds to make a series of unpredictable choices that shift the direction of the story in ways neither Paeng-i nor Saeng Dak anticipate.

Jo Hye Joo has built strong credentials across projects including My Demon, Dear Hyeri, The Secret Romantic Greathouse, and Reborn Rich. She commented on the project:

“The historical setting and each character’s personal story left a strong impression. It’s such a compelling project that I wanted to join as soon as I read the script.”

About the Director: Hong Won-chan

‘I Am the Sinner’ is written and directed by Hong Won-chan, whose previous work includes the stylish, fast-paced action film ‘Deliver Us from Evil’, which is widely credited with pushing the boundaries of the Korean action genre. This series marks his first major series directing project, and having him handle both the writing and direction adds coherence to what is already a tonally dense crime noir. The series is produced by New Point and Plus Media Entertainment.

What Happened at the Script Reading?

Before filming began, the three lead actors attended a script reading session, their first time working together. A production representative confirmed that they “radiated overwhelming energy” as soon as they began reading, immersing immediately into their respective characters. All three actors came away expressing clear enthusiasm for the project, with their individual quotes reflecting genuine personal investment in the material rather than standard promotional language.

When and Where to Watch

‘I Am the Sinner’ will be available exclusively on Disney+ as a worldwide original. The series is expected to premiere in 2027, though a specific date has not been confirmed as of March 31, 2026. Filming was underway or beginning imminently at the time of the casting announcement. You can access Disney+ via its website at disneyplus.com and through the Disney+ app, available on smart TVs, mobile devices, tablets, and gaming consoles across most major regions.
