In the fall of 2026, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) will open its doors to a story told not through music but through canvas, sculpture, and silence. BTS leader RM (Kim Namjoon), the artist whose words have shaped a generation, will step into the role of curator for “RM x SFMOMA,” an exhibition that bridges worlds: his personal collection of modern and contemporary Korean art and SFMOMA’s global holdings.
Running from October 2026 to February 2027, the exhibition will feature around 200 works, many never before seen by the public. Co-curated with América Castillo and Hyoeun Kim of SFMOMA, the show marks the first time RM’s private art collection will be unveiled in a museum setting—an intimate dialogue between the personal and the universal.
A Bridge of Light Between Worlds
RM describes the exhibition as a reflection of boundaries—between East and West, Korea and America, the modern and the contemporary, the deeply personal and the profoundly shared.
“I don’t want to prescribe how these works should be seen; whether out of curiosity or study, all perspectives are welcome,” RM said in a statement. “My only hope is that this exhibition can be a small but sturdy bridge for many.”
That bridge is made of brushstrokes and quiet devotion. Within the galleries of SFMOMA, the meditative blues of Yun Hyong-keun, the lyrical lines of Park Rehyun, and the earthy abstraction of Chang Ucchin will meet the solemn minimalism of Mark Rothko and Agnes Martin, the poetic colors of Matisse, and the delicate forms of Georgia O’Keeffe and Paul Klee.
This fusion isn’t meant to compare, but to converse—to show how art transcends geography, speaking instead in the language of feeling.
The Collector’s Journey
RM’s love for art is no secret. It’s woven through his lyrics, his studio, and even his quiet museum visits, captured in fleeting Instagram posts. His journey as a collector began almost by accident. In 2018, while touring the U.S., he visited the Art Institute of Chicago, an experience he later described as “transformative.” Since then, art has been a compass for him—a constant in a world defined by movement.
From Yun Hyong-keun’s solemn canvases to Philip Guston’s bold abstractions, RM’s collection mirrors the inner landscapes of his mind—disciplined, searching, endlessly reflective. His 2022 album Indigo even paid tribute to Yun, both in imagery and in its lead track “Yun,” which explores how art and identity intertwine.
In the years since, RM has emerged as one of Korea’s most passionate cultural ambassadors. His donations to Korean heritage preservation projects and his loans to museums, including Seoul’s Kwon Jin-Kyu retrospective, have earned him recognition not just as a global pop icon but as a thoughtful custodian of art history.
A Museum’s Invitation
For SFMOMA, this collaboration is a meeting of artistic minds.
“Visitors will have an unprecedented opportunity to explore RM’s beautiful and contemplative collection in dialogue with works from our holdings,” said Janet Bishop, Chief Curator at SFMOMA. “It’s an invitation to make new discoveries and reflect on our own relationships with art.”
The exhibition’s curatorial design will emphasize resonance—the subtle echoes that occur when a Korean Dansaekhwa canvas stands beside an American color field, or when a minimalist sculpture converses with a century-old ink painting. Each pairing is less about contrast and more about empathy—how different artists, across eras and continents, search for stillness in their own way.
Art as Everyday Life
To RM, art has never been a luxury but a daily ritual.
“Art is like every basic thing in life, like eating and sleeping,” he said in a past interview. “It’s a beautiful process to be an art man.”
That philosophy will likely define the tone of RM x SFMOMA: not grandiose, but intimate; not loud, but resonant. Visitors won’t just see RM’s collection—they’ll feel his quiet fascination with the process of seeing, of finding meaning in color, texture, and time.
A Year to Wait, A World to Anticipate
The early announcement, made by HYBE INSIGHT and SFMOMA in October 2025, has already sent ripples across both art and music communities. When RM x SFMOMA opens next fall, it won’t just mark a milestone for the artist—it will stand as a testament to how art, when loved deeply, can transcend fame and become something universal.
In that space, between the brush and the beat, between the Korean modernists and the Western masters, RM’s curatorial vision will remind the world that art—like music—remains humanity’s truest language.
