Subnautica 2 is the long-awaited sequel to the beloved 2018 underwater survival game by Unknown Worlds Entertainment. With its Early Access launch generating serious buzz, a lot of players on older hardware want to know whether Xbox One makes the cut. The short answer is no, but there is quite a bit more worth knowing before you write off your options entirely.

Subnautica 2 Early Access Release Date and Price
Subnautica 2 entered Game Preview (Early Access) on May 14, 2026. It launched simultaneously on Xbox Series X/S, Windows PC, and the ROG Xbox Ally. The game also arrived day one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, meaning subscribers did not need to purchase it separately.
For players who prefer to buy outright, Subnautica 2 is available for $29.99 on Steam, Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store.
Is Subnautica 2 Coming to Xbox One?
No. Subnautica 2 does not support Xbox One, and Unknown Worlds has not announced any plans to bring the game to last-generation hardware. The Early Access build launches exclusively on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and the ROG Xbox Ally, with older consoles left out entirely.
This follows a pattern seen across many major 2026 releases, where developers focus their optimization efforts on current-generation hardware to push performance boundaries. Unknown Worlds confirmed that the Core Tech team invested significant time specifically optimizing the game for Xbox Series X/S, with that fixed platform architecture serving as an ideal baseline for performance work across other platforms.
However, if you previously owned Subnautica or Subnautica: Below Zero on Xbox One, both of those games did support last-generation hardware, so the shift to current-gen only is a notable change for the franchise.
What About PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2?
Subnautica 2 also does not launch on PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch 2 during Early Access. Neither platform has a confirmed release date at this stage, and Unknown Worlds has not announced any version of the game for those platforms alongside the current rollout.

What Does the Subnautica 2 Early Access Version Include?
The Early Access build that launched on May 14 reflects years of development and serves as the foundation for what Unknown Worlds describes as a 2 to 3 year active development period. Here is what players get at launch:
- Single-player mode with a full survival and exploration experience. Players can also convert a solo save to co-op at any point
- Online co-op multiplayer for up to four players, a first for the Subnautica series
- Cross-platform multiplayer between Xbox Series X/S and PC players
- Four pre-designed playable characters, with more customisation options coming throughout Early Access
- The Tadpole submersible for traversing new alien biomes
- Base building and crafting systems, with tools, equipment, and vehicles expanding throughout development
- Built on Unreal Engine 5, marking a shift from Unity used in previous Subnautica titles
Unknown Worlds has confirmed that biomes, creatures, leviathans, story content, and features will expand continuously as Early Access develops. Players should expect bugs and in-progress features as part of the experience, as the team actively uses community feedback to shape the final release.
A Quick Note on the ROG Xbox Ally
For handheld players, Subnautica 2 launches with specific support for the ROG Xbox Ally, which is the Xbox-branded version of the ROG Ally handheld. Unknown Worlds confirmed that a dedicated ROG Ally Graphics preset ships as the default setting on the device, though players can adjust graphical options manually for their preferred balance of performance and fidelity. The team confirmed the handheld’s analog controls were specifically tuned during development for a smooth and intuitive play experience.
Will Subnautica 2 Ever Come to Xbox One?
Unknown Worlds has made no announcement about bringing Subnautica 2 to Xbox One at any point, either during or after its Early Access period. Given the game’s clear focus on current-generation performance optimisation and its use of Unreal Engine 5, an Xbox One port looks unlikely. However, as the game approaches its full 1.0 release years down the line, broader platform support remains unconfirmed either way.
For now, Xbox One players will need to upgrade to Xbox Series X/S or access the game on PC to play Subnautica 2.
