Forza Horizon 6 is one of the most anticipated racing games of 2026, set to take players through the neon-lit streets of Tokyo and across Japan’s largest open-world map in the franchise’s history. However, before it even had a chance to launch officially, the game made headlines for all the wrong reasons. An encryption failure during the Steam preload process exposed the full game to pirates more than a week before its scheduled release date.

What Happened Exactly?

On May 10, 2026, SteamDB, a platform that tracks Steam game data, detected a significant update to the Forza Horizon 6 Steam page. However, unlike a standard preload update, the files uploaded to the server carried no encryption whatsoever.

Under normal circumstances, a Steam preload pushes encrypted game files to a player’s system. The files remain locked until Steam pushes a separate decryption update at the official launch time. In the case of Forza Horizon 6, it appears that both the preload and the decryption update went live simultaneously and far too early, leaving the full 155 GB of game content completely exposed.

The files spread quickly across piracy communities and illegal file-sharing sites. Reports confirmed that the leaked build included:

  • Early gameplay footage
  • Internal documentation
  • Full car lists
  • Environmental textures and assets
  • Developmental material related to future Forza titles

How Did Pirates Access the Game?

Because Forza Horizon 6 reportedly does not use Denuvo or similarly robust anti-piracy DRM, the game did not require complex bypass techniques to run. Players on cracking forums confirmed the game was fully playable in offline mode shortly after the files surfaced online.

Reddit threads sharing the pirated content began appearing on communities such as r/GamingLeaksAndRumours, though Reddit’s Legal Operations team removed the most prominent posts. Microsoft also began issuing takedown notices across various hosting sites.

Additionally, reports emerged of players streaming Forza Horizon 6 gameplay on social media using the leaked build, prompting concern that Microsoft would move to ban accounts associated with the pirated version.

How Does This Affect Legitimate Buyers?

This is arguably the most frustrating part of the situation for the Forza community. Players who purchased the Premium Edition specifically for four days of early access on May 15 found themselves in the position of waiting longer than those who accessed the game illegally.

One user on X, posting under the handle NIKFOR, publicly announced a refund of their Premium Upgrade package, stating that paying for early access had no value when the full game became playable through piracy before any legitimate buyer could even launch it.

However, it is worth noting that pirated copies will not have access to online features, as those require server-side authentication. Post-launch updates, DLC, and online multiplayer are locked behind legitimate ownership.

Microsoft has also reportedly warned that anyone caught using pirated copies of Forza Horizon 6 could face a lifetime ban from the Microsoft ecosystem.

Is This the First Time Something Like This Has Happened?

Unfortunately, no. This marks the second major Steam preload encryption failure of 2026 alone.

Earlier in the year, the PC version of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach suffered a near-identical incident in March, when approximately 113 GB of unencrypted content leaked online just days before release. Pragmata also saw its files cracked just a day before launch, while LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight was accidentally released early on Xbox through Walmart digital codes.

The frequency of these incidents has sparked wider debate within the gaming industry about build security practices, with some analysts pointing to ongoing layoffs reducing available oversight teams, and others suggesting that increasing reliance on AI tools in development pipelines may be introducing new vulnerabilities in encryption processes.

What Has Microsoft Said?

As of the time of reporting, neither Microsoft nor Playground Games had issued a public statement regarding the leak. IGN and several outlets have reached out for comment, but no response has been provided. There is also no confirmed update on whether the leak will affect the game’s official May 19 launch timeline.

Will Forza Horizon 6 Still Succeed at Launch?

Despite the leak, early commercial signals remain strong. At the time the leak surfaced, Forza Horizon 6 held the position of second best-selling game by revenue on Steam, and ranked as the third most-wishlisted title on the platform. Pre-purchase activity had been notably healthy heading into the final week before launch.

The game also launches directly into Xbox Game Pass as a Microsoft first-party title, which broadens its accessibility significantly beyond outright purchases.

However, given that Forza Horizon 5 sold an estimated 7.2 to 8.4 million units on Steam according to Sensor Tower data, the pre-launch piracy situation does raise genuine concerns about the potential impact on day-one and week-one sales figures.
