Resident Evil Requiem fans woke up on 8 May 2026 to a genuinely unexpected surprise. Capcom shadow-dropped Leon Must Die Forever, a brand new free roguelike mode, with zero formal warning and immediate availability across all platforms. The reaction from the community has been strong, and for good reason. This is not a small patch or a cosmetic drop. It is a full new mode, and it is already live.

What Is Leon Must Die Forever?

Leon Must Die Forever is a fast-paced roguelike mode exclusive to Resident Evil Requiem. You play as Leon S. Kennedy and fight through multiple stages across locations from the main campaign, working your way toward a final boss fight against Victor. The mode runs on a strict timer, features permadeath, randomised weapons, randomised enemy spawns, and branching paths across roughly 20 levels in total.’

Capcom describes the mode as offering “fast-paced action” that is distinct from the main story and packed with replay value. The mode draws clear comparisons to the Mercenaries mode from earlier Resident Evil titles, though Leon Must Die Forever leans more heavily into roguelike mechanics with its permadeath system and randomised structure.

Only Leon is playable in this mode for now.

How to Unlock Leon Must Die Forever in Resident Evil Requiem

You need to meet two conditions before you can access the mode:

  • Step 1: Finish the Resident Evil Requiem main campaign in full
  • Step 2: Update the game to version 1.300.000

Once both conditions are met, follow these steps:

  • Go to the main menu
  • Select “Extra Games”
  • Select “Leon Must Die Forever”
  • Choose “Ready to Die” to start a run

You can also browse unlockable items, traits, and active challenges under the “Special Content” tab before jumping in.

How Leon Must Die Forever Works

Starting Point Every run begins at Main Street of Wrenwood. From there, you choose your path by entering red doors placed at fixed locations across the map.

The Timer The clock is always running. Every run is a race against the time limit, and reaching the final boss before time runs out is just as important as surviving the stages themselves. Do not sleep on this mechanic, especially on higher difficulties.

Branching Paths Some areas branch into up to three different paths, giving you the opportunity to decide how challenging you want each run to be. Choosing a harder route typically rewards you with better loot.

Two Main Goals Per Stage:

  • Search for ammo and stronger weapons, found in weapon boxes at fixed points or dropped by rare enemies
  • Defeat enemies to fill Leon’s Enhancer meter and unlock special abilities

Permadeath If you die before reaching the final level, your run ends and you lose all upgrades and guns. There are no checkpoints mid-run.

Difficulty Levels The mode caters to both casual players and hardcore players with multiple difficulty settings. Capcom has also included an extreme high-difficulty setting described as being for only the most confident players, with a warning that you will “die forever.”

The Enhancer System Explained

The Enhancer system is one of the standout new mechanics in Leon Must Die Forever, and understanding it early makes a significant difference to how far your runs go.

  • Defeating enemies fills Leon’s Enhancer gauge
  • Once you reach at least 100 points, the “Refine Enhancer” prompt appears
  • You then choose one of three randomly offered abilities
  • The benefits cover a wide range of situations, from near-death recovery to general gun damage buffs
  • The abilities on offer change from run to run, which is a core part of what keeps the mode fresh

These enhancer abilities are exclusive to Leon Must Die Forever and do not carry over from the main story.

Challenges, CP Rewards and Replayability

Beyond simply surviving, Leon Must Die Forever includes a dedicated challenge system that adds a further layer of replay value. Completing challenges earns you Completionist Points (CP), which you can spend in a special shop to unlock additional items and traits. You can browse active challenges and available rewards directly from the “Special Content” tab on the mode’s menu screen before starting a run. This gives players a clear progression goal beyond just reaching Victor, and it meaningfully extends the time you will spend in the mode.

All Maps in Leon Must Die Forever

There are nine maps in total, though four of them serve exclusively as boss arenas. The full branching structure accounts for roughly 20 stages across a complete run. Below is the full map list with levels and available doors:

Recommended beginner route: Start at Main Street, head to Care Center: Rehabilitation Ward, then East Raccoon City: Central Camp, followed by Blister Borne as the least punishing boss option before facing Victor.

Enemy Types and Rare Enemies

Alongside standard enemies, Leon Must Die Forever introduces stronger variants that are worth hunting down deliberately:

  • Red and blue zombies count as rare enemies and drop better weapons
  • Campaign mini-bosses such as the chef and the singers also reappear as rare enemies
  • Killing rare enemies is one of the most reliable ways to upgrade your arsenal mid-run without relying purely on weapon boxes

Is a Story DLC Also Coming?

Yes, however, Leon Must Die Forever is not the full story expansion. In March, game director Koshi Nakanishi confirmed that a story expansion is currently in development but explained it “will take some time.” No release window has been confirmed yet. The two pieces of content are completely separate, so this free mode is not a replacement for what is still coming.

Is It Worth Playing?

If you have already finished Resident Evil Requiem and want a reason to jump back in, Leon Must Die Forever gives you exactly that at no cost. The permadeath mechanic, randomised abilities, timed runs, and challenge rewards mean no two runs play out the same way. The mode starts accessible enough for newcomers but scales into genuinely punishing territory for players chasing the extreme difficulty ranks.

You can download the update now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
