Story: What Is PRAGMATA About?
PRAGMATA takes place on a lunar research station overtaken by a rogue artificial intelligence called IDUS. You follow spacefarer Hugh and android companion Diana as they fight through the hostile facility and attempt to find a way back to Earth. The narrative focuses on survival, trust, and the evolving relationship between Hugh and Diana as they navigate both the dangers of the station and the mystery of what caused IDUS to turn hostile.
| Character | Role |
| Hugh | The playable spacefarer armed with firearms and a jetpack |
| Diana | Android companion who hacks enemy systems to expose weak points |
| IDUS | The rogue AI antagonist controlling the lunar station |
Diana visually appears human, however, her machine-like mannerisms and voice place her deliberately in the uncanny valley. Capcom’s director Cho Yonghee noted the challenge of expressing Diana’s android nature across different global cultural contexts, which directly influenced how her robotic qualities were represented throughout the game.
How the Gameplay Works
PRAGMATA uses a dual-character system where you control both Hugh and Diana simultaneously. The core loop works as follows:
Hugh handles all combat and traversal, equipped with firearms and a jetpack for dodging attacks and reaching elevated areas.
Diana hacks into enemy defence systems, disabling their armour and revealing weak points for Hugh to target.
Hacking sequences take the form of real-time grid puzzles where you guide a cursor to a target tile while evading obstacles. These puzzles run simultaneously with active combat, meaning Hugh still needs to dodge enemy attacks while Diana works through each hack. Optional bonus nodes on the puzzle grid offer combat advantages such as increased weapon damage when activated.
The game also features a New York City-inspired level that Capcom designed to look as though it was created by generative AI, complete with deliberate visual distortions like taxis sinking into floors and buses emerging from walls. However, no generative AI tools were used in its creation. Human developers constructed these effects manually to capture an uncanny, AI-generated aesthetic that fits the game’s themes.
The game is single-player focused, with an expected runtime of 8 to 12+ hours depending on how much you explore.
Why Was PRAGMATA Delayed Three Times?
PRAGMATA was originally announced at Sony’s PlayStation 5 reveal event on June 11, 2020, marking Capcom’s first original franchise in eight years. Here is the full delay timeline:
| Stage | Detail |
| Original Target | 2022 |
| First Delay | Pushed to 2023 (announced January 2021) |
| Second Delay | Delayed indefinitely (June 2023 trailer) |
| Return | 2026 window confirmed at June 2025 State of Play |
| Date Locked | April 24, 2026 confirmed at The Game Awards 2025 |
| Brought Forward | Global launch moved to April 17, 2026 (March 5, 2026) |
The delays stemmed directly from the game’s experimental design. Balancing the real-time hacking mechanics with action combat required multiple full iterations from the team. Director Cho Yonghee has spoken openly about the “trial and error” process involved in developing the dual-character system, which had no direct precedent to build from.
Additionally, the team needed significant time to develop the RE Engine’s hair strand simulation system to accurately render Diana’s long hair in motion. This technology later carried over to benefit other Capcom titles including Resident Evil Requiem. As a new IP built largely by newer Capcom staff rather than veteran franchise teams, the project needed more development time to solidify its identity before the studio felt confident bringing it to release.
