Thirteen years is a long time to wait for anything, but Grand Theft Auto VI has somehow made that wait feel both endless and electric. Pre-orders are now live, the numbers are already breaking records, and the conversation around this game has moved well beyond gaming into something closer to a cultural event.

Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. No PC release date has been confirmed, and Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has previously stated that Rockstar prioritises console releases first, describing console players as its core audience, even while acknowledging that PC can account for up to 45 to 50 percent of sales for a major title.

How to Pre-Order GTA VI

You can pre-order Grand Theft Auto VI through the following retailers:

  • Amazon
  • Best Buy
  • Walmart
  • Target
  • GameStop
  • PlayStation Store
  • Xbox Store

Players who pre-order before November 20 will receive the Vintage Vice City Pack. Digital pre-orders also come with a complimentary one-month subscription to GTA+.

Pre-loading begins on November 12, covering both physical and digital editions.

What the Physical Edition Actually Contains

Here is something worth knowing before you commit to a retail box. Physical editions of Grand Theft Auto VI will not contain a disc. Each boxed copy holds only a digital download code, meaning the physical version functions as a code-in-a-box rather than a traditional disc release. This has drawn criticism from fans who value physical ownership and resale options, though Rockstar has not commented further on the decision.

Standard Edition vs. Ultimate Edition: What You Get

EditionPriceWhat’s Included
Standard Edition$79.99Base game
Ultimate Edition$99.99Base game plus exclusive vehicles, weapons, apparel, access to PTT Youngin$ Compound missions, and access to five exclusive in-game stores

The Ultimate Edition includes access to five stores unavailable in the standard edition: two mod shops, a clothing store, a salon, and a tattoo parlour. It also unlocks the PTT Youngin$ Compound and Scores side missions, which involve raiding a gang’s store for contraband and special items. This content was confirmed via the official pre-order page and has drawn significant fan debate about paywalling content that feels central to the GTA experience.

The Pre-Order Numbers Are Already Historic

Grand Theft Auto VI reportedly surpassed 39 million pre-orders worldwide ahead of its launch, generating over $3 billion in revenue before the game has even released. Industry analyst Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming went further, predicting that GTA VI could generate $1 billion in pre-order revenue within a single hour when comparing the pace to GTA V, which hit that milestone over three days.

Investment bank Piper Sandler estimates the game could sell more than 46 million copies in its first 24 hours, generating approximately $3.2 billion in first-year revenue. Analysts at DFC Intelligence project 40 million units sold in the first year alone.

The game’s first two trailers have accumulated more than 450 million combined views online, and its cultural footprint extends well beyond gaming. GTA-themed meme coins even surged across crypto markets on the same day pre-orders opened.

What is GTA VI’s Development Cost

Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive reportedly spent between $1 billion and $1.5 billion developing Grand Theft Auto VI, making it one of the most expensive entertainment productions ever created. That figure dwarfs most Hollywood blockbusters and reflects just how ambitious the project is.

However, based on the pre-order trajectory, analysts suggest Take-Two could recover most or all of its development budget through pre-sales alone before a single copy ships.

Take-Two stock did fall nearly 3 percent after pre-orders opened in a classic sell-the-news reaction, following a 13 percent surge in the preceding week. Analysts remain broadly bullish on the title’s long-term performance.

What Is Grand Theft Auto VI Actually About?

Grand Theft Auto VI returns to Vice City, Rockstar’s fictional recreation of Miami, set within the broader fictional state of Leonida, inspired by Florida. The game introduces Jason and Lucia, the franchise’s first male-female protagonist duo, in a story built around Rockstar’s signature mix of crime, action, and sharp social satire.

The game launches as a single-player experience. Sony’s official PlayStation FAQ confirmed that GTA VI is “a single-player experience,” with no online mode listed at launch. Rockstar has not announced when or how Grand Theft Auto VI Online will arrive, though the pattern mirrors GTA V’s 2013 launch, where the online component came weeks after the main release.

Rockstar has also confirmed improved content capture features built into GTA VI, making it easier for players to create and share their own videos from within the game. In 2023, Rockstar acquired Cfx, a popular modding marketplace, and turned it into an official platform for user-created assets.

The Bigger Picture: What GTA VI Means for the Industry

Games industry adviser Joost van Dreunen, a professor of video games at NYU Stern, put it plainly: “This is the big one. The whole industry has been clutching its little hands waiting for this one to come out.” He describes GTA VI as less of a game and more of a new operating system for an entire community, one that promises a living world players can share and return to for years.

GTA V launched in 2013, sold over 215 million copies worldwide, and generated nearly $10 billion across its lifetime including GTA Online, which still draws an estimated 18 million monthly active users. GTA VI carries the full weight of those expectations, and then some.

Whether the finished product can meet the moment is something only November 19 will settle. However, if the numbers already on the board mean anything, Rockstar has built something the world is genuinely ready to show up for.
