July is already one of the busiest months Pokémon Go has seen in a long time, and Spotlight Hours are back every Thursday to give Trainers a reliable weekly highlight to look forward to. Four Pokémon, four bonuses, and sixty minutes each time to make the most of boosted spawns and stacked rewards. If you plan ahead, each of these hours can deliver serious value whether you are chasing Shinies, building Candy reserves, or pushing your XP to the next level.
What Is Spotlight Hour in Pokémon Go?
Spotlight Hour is a weekly one-hour event in Pokémon Go where a single Pokémon spawns far more frequently in the wild than usual. Alongside the boosted spawns, a special bonus activates for the full duration of the hour, covering rewards like double XP, double Candy, or double Stardust depending on the week. The event runs every Thursday from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM local time, making it accessible to players anywhere in the world.
Why Do Spotlight Hours Run on Thursdays?
Spotlight Hours now run specifically on Thursdays as part of the Forever Forward Season structure. Niantic introduced a daily discovery system for the season, with each day of the week dedicated to a particular type of activity. Thursdays are designated as GO Battle Thursdays and Spotlight Hour, meaning both events run simultaneously on the same evening. This is worth knowing because it lets you stack activities on a single night rather than spreading your playtime across the week.
On GO Battle Thursdays, the maximum number of sets you can play per day increases from five to ten, for a total of 50 battles, and win rewards offer up to 4x Stardust. Logging in on Thursday therefore gives you Spotlight Hour spawns and boosted Battle League rewards in the same session.

July 2 — Pidgey Spotlight Hour
The bonus for the Pidgey Spotlight Hour is double XP for evolving Pokémon, and this applies to any evolution you perform during the hour, not just Pidgey evolutions. The smartest approach is to collect a large stack of Pokémon ready to evolve in advance, then burn through them all the moment the hour begins. Activating a Lucky Egg at the start of the event doubles that XP again, making this one of the most efficient hours in July for levelling up fast.
As for Pidgey itself, its final evolution Pidgeot is a solid and consistent pick for the Great League and Ultra League thanks to its bulk, fast energy generation, and access to Feather Dance, which can quickly weaken opponents and swing matchups in your favour. However, Pidgeot does not offer much value in PvE, as there are stronger Flying-type attackers that outperform it in Raids and it has limited use in Team GO Rocket battles. If you are deciding whether to invest resources into Pidgey, PvP is where it truly shines.
July 16 — Zubat Spotlight Hour
The Zubat Spotlight Hour brings double XP for catching Pokémon as its active bonus. This is one of the more straightforward bonuses to take advantage of since you earn the reward simply by catching whatever spawns around you during the hour. Pairing a Lucky Egg with this bonus is highly recommended, as it doubles the XP you earn from every catch and makes the hour considerably more rewarding for players working their way up the level ladder.
July 23 — Eevee Spotlight Hour
Eevee on July 23 is the standout Spotlight Hour of the entire month. The bonus is double Candy for catching Pokémon, and given how Candy-hungry the full Eeveelution line is, this hour gives Trainers a genuine opportunity to bank serious resources toward whichever evolution they have been working toward. Make sure your bag is stocked with Pinap Berries before the hour begins, as these will double your Candy haul per catch and stack directly with the event bonus for maximum returns.
July 30 — Bidoof Spotlight Hour
Bidoof closes out July’s Spotlight Hours with a double Candy for transferring Pokémon bonus. This one rewards a slightly different approach compared to the rest of the month. Rather than focusing purely on catching, the most efficient strategy is to let Bidoof pile up throughout the hour and then transfer them all while the bonus remains active. This keeps your Candy gains high without requiring you to use Berries on every catch.
Can These Pokémon Be Shiny?
All four featured Pokémon in July have Shiny versions available. However, the individual Shiny rate does not increase during Spotlight Hour. The rate stays at 1 in 538, meaning the odds per encounter remain the same as outside the event. However, because the spawn rate of the featured Pokémon rises significantly during the hour, you encounter far more of them in sixty minutes than you would during normal play, which naturally improves your overall chances of finding a Shiny.
If you are specifically Shiny hunting during a Spotlight Hour, the best approach is to use Incense, explore actively, and tap every Pokémon you see. If it is not Shiny, leave immediately rather than catching it and move on to the next encounter as quickly as possible. You can also use Pokédex classifications to single out your Shiny Pokémon collection, which helps you track what you have already found.
How to Prepare for Each Spotlight Hour
With only sixty minutes available, a little preparation before each event starts makes a significant difference to how much you can get done.
Stock Up on Items Before the Hour Starts
Make sure you have enough Poké Balls, Great Balls, and berries ready before the event begins. Spinning PokéStops mid-hour wastes time you could be using to catch more Pokémon. Nanab and Razz Berries make catching easier, while Pinap Berries are the priority during any Candy bonus week.
Manage Your Pokémon Storage
You are going to catch a lot of Pokémon during an active Spotlight Hour, so clearing out your Pokémon Storage Box beforehand is a sensible move. However, if the bonus involves transferring, such as the Bidoof hour on July 30, let your spare Pokémon accumulate throughout the event and transfer them all while the bonus is still live to maximise your Candy gains.
Use Incense or Lure Modules
Using Incense at the start of the hour will increase the number of Pokémon you encounter while moving, and a Lure Module attached to a nearby PokéStop will draw more spawns to a fixed location. Both options increase how many featured Pokémon you encounter during the hour, improving your overall results. Incense is the more flexible option if you plan to walk around, while Lure Modules suit players who prefer to stay in one spot near a PokéStop.
Activate a Lucky Egg or Star Piece at the Right Time
During XP-based Spotlight Hours such as the Pidgey hour on July 2 and the Zubat hour on July 16, activating a Lucky Egg at the start of the event doubles your XP earnings for thirty minutes and pairs directly with the event bonus. Similarly, if a Spotlight Hour features a Stardust bonus, activating a Star Piece will further increase what you earn per catch.
Consider Using the Mystery Box or a Coin Bag
If a Spotlight Hour lands on a week where you also want to gather Meltan or Gimmighoul coins, you can pair the event with a Mystery Box or Coin Bag alongside your catching session. This works particularly well during a double Catch Candy hour, as the bonus applies broadly and gives you more value from every encounter regardless of which Pokémon you are catching.
Activate a Mega Evolution for Extra Candy
Having an active Mega Evolution during a Candy-based Spotlight Hour can earn you additional Candy for Pokémon that share a type with your Mega-Evolved Pokémon. During the Eevee Spotlight Hour on July 23, this is worth considering if you have a relevant Mega Evolution available and are trying to maximise your Candy total for a specific Eeveelution.
