Does Echoes Of Aincrad Have Co-Op?

If you have watched Sword Art Online anime, you already know the core sentiment of the story is all about making bonds with real people, even if they meet in a fantasy world. So, it is only natural to assume that a game inspired by SAO will let you share experiences with real people.

Right?

Well, the answer might come as a disappointment to you. Keep reading to learn why Bandai Namco decided to take an unexpected turn on the Co-op mode.

So, Is Echoes Of Aincrad Single-Player Or Multiplayer?

Despite carrying the Sword Art Online name, Echoes of Aincrad is confirmed to be a single-player experience. Yes, the irony of that is not lost on anyone. This is clearly not what most of us were hoping for from such a huge SAO project!

The official Steam page lists the game under the “Single-player” category. In addition to this, there is no multiplayer, co-op, or online mode listed anywhere in the confirmed features.

Bandai Namco’s own official description backs this up directly, describing the experience as something you “live as yourself by designing and customizing your own avatar,” with your journey shaped by “your equipment, weapons, statistics, partner and special skills.”

As you can notice, the description mentions the word “partner”, singular. That’s your one confirmed companion system, and it’s an NPC, not another real player.

Then, What Replaces Multiplayer In Echoes Of Aincrad?

So, instead of teaming up with actual people or your friends, Echoes of Aincrad leans on a customizable NPC partner system. According to the official feature breakdown, you get to:

  • Choose your own partner from available NPC companions
  • Deepen your bond with them as you progress through the story
  • Unlock new skills and more powerful abilities together as that bond grows
  • Adapt their tactics and build to create what Bandai Namco calls “a team dynamic that turns every battle into a triumph”

So while you won’t be inviting a friend into your world, the game is clearly designed to give you a sense of teamwork through this single, deepening NPC relationship instead.

Why Are Fans So Frustrated About This?

Honestly, the frustration makes sense to those who are familiar with the concept of the storyline. The game is inspired by Sword Art Online, a franchise built entirely around the idea of thousands of real players trapped together in a virtual world, forming guilds, raiding bosses as groups, and relying on other actual people to survive. Hence, announcing a strictly solo experience under that name was always going to spark debate.

Currently, fan opinions from the US, UK, and other regions are quite conflicted on the current state of multiplayer. While some fans are furious, others are keeping an open mind, and some are even excited about the solo-player experience.

Is There Any Official Word On Adding Co-Op Later to Echoes Of Aincrad?

To be completely clear here, Bandai Namco has not officially confirmed any plans to add co-op or multiplayer, either at launch or in a future update. Everything about a potential co-op mode, DLC multiplayer addition, or expanded online features comes entirely from fan speculation and community wishlisting, not developer statements. So, if you are holding out hope for this, there is currently no official roadmap confirming it will happen.

What About The Game’s Floor Count?

I would like to mention one more point, since it ties into the multiplayer conversation. There has been community discussion suggesting the base game may only include a limited number of Aincrad’s 100 floors at launch, with additional floors possibly coming later through updates or a sequel down the line. This detail has not been officially confirmed by Bandai Namco in the source material available, so do take it with a grain of salt.

While the game does not seem to feature a multiplayer mode for now, it is still too soon to say that the gameplay curated by developers may disappoint us. Maybe the lack of multiplayer turns out to be a more introspective experience, or maybe not. I guess we will get our answers on July 10th!
