Third Burning Man Death Confirmed After Attendee Dies in Transit
The third death was confirmed by Pershing County Sheriff and Coroner Jerry Allen in a statement issued on Monday, September 7.
According to Allen, the unidentified participant died while being transported from the Burning Man site to a hospital in Reno, approximately 120 miles from Black Rock City.
Because the death occurred outside Pershing County, the case falls under the jurisdiction of authorities in Washoe County.
Allen said:
“Although we average 1 death a year at the Festival, we have had two so far this year within the confines of the Festival and I have received information regarding a third who died in transit to a hospital in Reno,”

Who Was Sampson Tshombe?
The first of the two on-site fatalities involved Sampson Tshombe, a man in his mid-50s.
Tshombe experienced a medical emergency on September 3. He was found on a street inside the festival grounds, where emergency personnel immediately began lifesaving efforts.
The Burning Man Project said:
“immediately received lifesaving measures, and was transported to the onsite center for emergency care where he was pronounced deceased.”
Pershing County authorities later said Tshombe had:
“been found on a street within the Festival and emergency personnel had performed CPR on him for several minutes, until a certified doctor pronounced Sampson deceased.”
Deputies were notified of a possible death at Rampart, the temporary medical facility serving Black Rock City, at approximately 6:36 p.m. on September 3.
Tshombe was subsequently pronounced dead at the facility.
His name was initially withheld while authorities worked to notify his family.
Investigators said there were no outward signs of foul play. However, because authorities did not have access to his complete medical history, his body was sent to the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy and toxicology screening.
Craigh Mann Was Found Dead in His Camp Two Days Later
The second fatality came just 48 hours after Tshombe’s death.
Craigh Mann, 60, was found dead by campmates at approximately 3 p.m. on September 5.
Authorities said Mann was discovered inside a trailer he was sharing with his partner.
A preliminary investigation found no apparent signs of foul play, but investigators have not determined the cause or manner of death.
The Burning Man Project confirmed Mann’s death and said:
“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the participant’s family, friends, campmates, and all those affected by this loss.”
Mann’s body was also sent to the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office for examination.

For both Tshombe and Mann, the causes of death remain undetermined.
The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to conduct autopsies and toxicology screenings to establish the causes and manners of death.
