Sects sit at the heart of Where Winds Meet. They decide how your character fights, behaves, earns rewards, and even how the world reacts to your actions. Because they feel so central to progression, many players ask an important question early on: Can I join multiple sects, or does one choice lock you in forever?
The short answer is simple. You can experience every sect in the game, but only one at a time. This detailed guide covers how flexible the system really is and how to use it to your advantage without hurting your progress.
In This Post:
One Sect at a Time
Where Winds Meet does not allow simultaneous sect membership. When you swear loyalty to a sect, your character becomes a disciple of that single group. The game enforces this exclusivity through mechanics, rules, and reputation systems.
However, this exclusivity does not mean permanence.

You can leave your current sect, complete the punishment, return to being sectless, and then join another sect whenever you choose. The game supports this loop intentionally, and many experienced players rotate through sects over time.
What Happens When You Leave a Sect?
Leaving a sect does not erase your character’s identity or progress. Instead, it changes which systems currently apply to you. All you need to do is serve a brief Severance Period and you are a free bird again,
Here is what actually happens when you switch:
Martial Arts Stay With You
When you join a sect, you unlock its signature martial art and weapon through initiation. Once unlocked, these remain permanently available. Leaving the sect does not remove them from your kit.
Cosmetics Remain Unlocked
Any outfits, accessories, or visual items purchased from a sect shop stay unlocked forever. You can wear them even while serving a rival sect or staying sectless.
Reputation Progress Pauses
Each sect tracks its own reputation or precept value. When you leave, progress stops for that sect. If you return later, you continue from where you left off, but you lose the opportunity to earn rewards during your absence.
Punishment & Temporary Debuff
Leaving a sect, however, does come with unique punishments. A temporary debuff is also applied to your progress bar for a few hours (except for Nine Mortal Ways). After this phase passes, you are prompted towards Perception Forest where you need to complete the challenge to get your debuff revoked.

In addition to this, certain Sects also require you to pay additional penalties for betraying the master.
Rules No Longer Apply
Sect rules only affect active members. Once you leave and complete the Severance Period, you no longer face penalties or requirements tied to that sect’s philosophy.
How Switching Sects Works in Practice
Switching sects follows a consistent flow across the game:
- Open the Sects menu.
- Choose the option to Betray Master.
- Serve the punishment for leaving the Sect.
- Enter a sectless state.
- Follow the entry clue for a new sect and complete its initiation.

Some sects require combat trials, others ask for currency, and a few involve survival challenges. Nine Mortal Ways stands out as the easiest to leave, since it only demands a large coin payment rather than a combat ordeal.

Can You Rejoin a Sect You Left?
Yes. Where Winds Meet does not permanently lock you out of any sect.
You can rejoin a sect you previously left, regain access to its systems, and continue progression. The game treats sect allegiance as a chapter in your character’s story, not a one time decision.
This design encourages experimentation rather than commitment anxiety.
Why Rotating Between Sects Is a Good Strategy?
Many players intentionally move between sects for strategic reasons.
Collecting Martial Arts
Each sect offers unique techniques tied to specific weapons. Rotating lets you build a wider combat toolkit.
Unlocking Cosmetics
Sect shops carry exclusive outfits and visual styles. Switching allows you to collect them all.
Avoiding Restrictive Rules
Some sects impose strict behavioral expectations, such as healing quotas, PvP aggression, or social engagement. Leaving gives you breathing room when those rules feel limiting.
Adapting Playstyle
Your preferences may change. A healer focused on Silver Needle early on may later enjoy the freedom of Nine Mortal Ways or the structure of Well of Heaven.
The Sectless Path: A Valid Alternative
You do not need to join any sect at all.
Staying sectless removes all rule based pressure and allows total freedom in how you approach the world. You can still acquire sect martial arts through alternative methods, though they usually cost more effort or resources.
Some players deliberately remain sectless to avoid penalties, grind neutral cosmetics, or roleplay as an independent wanderer.
Choosing Your First Sect With Flexibility in Mind
Since no choice locks you in, your first sect should serve your immediate goals.
- Pick based on the weapon or martial art you want early.
- Choose a sect whose rules align with how you already play.
- Select a faction whose aesthetic appeals to you.
If the fit feels wrong later, you can walk away without losing what you gained.
