After a staggering 25-year wait, the Pokémon franchise’s most iconic mascot is finally getting a brand-new variant, and the reveal comes from an unexpected source. Pokémon Pokopia, the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 life-simulation spin-off, has officially introduced Peakychu, a ghostly new form of Pikachu that has already set the internet on fire. Here is everything you need to know.

Meet Peakychu: Pikachu’s First New Variant in 25 Years

Now for the headline news. Pokémon Pokopia has officially revealed Peakychu, a new variant of Pikachu that is simultaneously adorable and a little unsettling. The Pokémon Company describes Peakychu as

“a pale Pikachu with drooping ears whose fur is a mysterious colour.”

Visually, Peakychu stands apart from the classic Pikachu in several noticeable ways:

  • Pale, whitish fur with a strange, ethereal glow
  • Drooping ears, unlike Pikachu’s signature upright ones
  • A smaller tail compared to standard Pikachu
  • Larger eyes that contribute to its melancholic expression

The name itself comes from the word “peaky,” meaning pale or unwell. Its Japanese name is Usuchu, derived from “usu,” meaning pale or light-coloured.

Speaking to Famitsu (via GamesRadar), Koei Tecmo chief director Takuto Edagawa revealed a charming behind-the-scenes detail: the development team gave Peakychu an unofficial nickname during production. “In particular, Pikachu (Peakychu)’s temporal and melancholy feel is impressive. Internally, we called it Unfortunate Pikachu,” Edagawa said. That name alone should give you a sense of just how distinct this variant’s personality is.

Crucially, this is the first new Pikachu variant since Pichu, Pikachu’s Baby form, which was introduced in Pokémon Gold and Silver back in 1999. While Gen 6 introduced an Alolan form for Raichu, Pikachu’s evolution, Pikachu itself never received a new form during that period. So yes, Peakychu genuinely represents a 25-year first.

Is Peakychu a Ghost-Type Pokémon?

This is the question every fan is asking right now, and the honest answer is: not confirmed yet, but the signs are hard to ignore.

Several details from the Pokémon Pokopia extended trailer point strongly toward Peakychu being a Ghost-type:

  • Its pale, glowing appearance gives off a distinctly spectral look
  • A cutscene shows Peakychu waking up and lighting lanterns using a blue and white energy
  • The Pokémon series has a long history of associating lantern-based designs with Ghost-types
  • The scene in question is surrounded by creepy atmospheric fog, which feels very deliberate

However, The Pokémon Company is staying tight-lipped on the matter. Their official description only confirms that the fur is a “mysterious colour,” which suggests the Ghost-type angle may be part of the game’s narrative mystery. Whether Peakychu turns out to be a Ghost-type, an Electric-type with ghostly aesthetics, or something else entirely, the community will have to wait for confirmation.

Other New Variant Pokémon in Pokémon Pokopia

Peakychu is not the only new variant making its debut in Pokémon Pokopia. The extended trailer also revealed two additional new forms worth getting excited about.

Mosslax is a new variant of the beloved Gen 1 sleepyhead Snorlax. According to the trailer, this Snorlax has been sleeping so deeply inside a cave that moss has grown across its entire body, complete with a flower growing from its head. Mosslax is the first new Snorlax variant since Gen 2, and it looks every bit as awesome as it sounds.

Smearguru is a new variant of Smeargle, the painting Pokémon. Smearguru sports a multi-coloured tail and colourful splotches across its body, fitting for a Pokémon built around artistic expression.

Additionally, Professor Tangrowth serves as your guide in the game. The character is a Tangrowth who has disguised itself as a human, though whether it officially counts as one of these new variants remains unclear.

Are These New Variants Official Pokédex Entries?

One of the bigger questions surrounding Peakychu, Mosslax, and Smearguru is whether they will receive their own numbered entries in the official Pokédex. The Pokémon Company is currently referring to them simply as “Peculiar Pokémon,” which keeps things deliberately vague.

If they do receive Pokédex entries, it would mark a notable moment where a spin-off game, co-developed by Bandai Namco’s Koei Tecmo rather than Game Freak alone, formally expanded the official Pokémon roster. That would be a genuinely historic precedent for the franchise.

What Is Pokémon Pokopia?

Pokémon Pokopia is an open-world life-simulation game for the Nintendo Switch 2, co-developed by Koei Tecmo and Game Freak, with The Pokémon Company publishing. The game draws clear inspiration from titles like Animal Crossing, Minecraft, and Dragon Quest Builders, and many fans are already calling it the spiritual successor to Viva Piñata that the community has been waiting years for.

In Pokémon Pokopia, players take on the role of a Ditto that has woken from a long slumber and transformed into a human. Guided by the mysterious Professor Tangrowth, who has been living alone in a long-abandoned land where humans and Pokémon once coexisted, players craft items, learn moves from Pokémon, and gradually restore the area’s habitats. The goal is to attract and befriend Pokémon by turning a desolate landscape into a thriving utopia, one step at a time.
