How to Get Keys in Crimson Desert and Open Locked Doors

Buying a stack of three keys from a vendor in Crimson Desert.

Crimson Desert is packed with locked doors hiding loot, quest items, and secrets. However, figuring out where to find Keys is not always obvious, and the game’s auto-consumption mechanic makes wasting them far too easy. This guide covers every confirmed method for getting Keys, how to use them smartly, and how to avoid losing them to doors you never meant to open.

First Stop: Visit the Back Alley Shop in Hernand

The moment you arrive in Hernand, head to Grimrak’s Back Alley Shop on the outskirts of town, just slightly southeast of the Church Confessional vendor. Once you discover it, it appears on your map as a red circle with a Mask icon, which also helps you spot additional Back Alley Shops as you explore further regions later in the game.

Your first priority here should be picking up a Mask (around 10 Copper Coins) and as many Keys as you can afford (30 Copper Coins each). Locked doors appear constantly across Pywel and the game auto-consumes Keys without any warning, so stocking up early saves a lot of frustration later.

There is also a second Back Alley Shop just south of St. Halssius’s House of Healing, further east of Hernand. Both shops carry exactly three standard Keys per restock, with restocking taking roughly one to two in-game days. Some players report the restock triggers faster if you leave the area and return. The Mask restocks roughly once per in-game day, and each shop usually carries only one at a time.

How to Get Keys in Crimson Desert

Keys in Crimson Desert work as generic, one-time-use items. Unlike many RPGs, most locked doors across Pywel do not require a specific Key. Any standard Key works on any standard locked door, which makes stocking up a smart move from the very start.

There are four confirmed ways to get Keys:

Getting and Using Your Mask

You need a Mask equipped before you can steal anything in Crimson Desert. There are three confirmed ways to get one:

  • Buy it from the Back Alley Shop for around 10 Copper Coins. This is the most reliable option, though the shop typically stocks only one Mask at a time and restocks roughly once per in-game day.
  • Loot it from Bleed Bandits, where it drops fairly commonly alongside Keys. Loot enemy bodies quickly after combat, however, as they despawn after a short time.
  • Earn it by completing the Bounty Notice: Jeffrey quest, available at the Hernand Guard Captain or the bounty board. This early bounty rewards you with one Mask plus a bonus of 1 Silver, making it well worth completing before you start exploring buildings.

One important detail that many players miss: the Mask does not just need to sit in your inventory. You must actively equip it through the Weapons radial menu, where it occupies its own dedicated slot separate from helmets and armor. Only once it is equipped can you interact with stealable containers without triggering suspicion.

Where to Steal Keys in Crimson Desert

Look for small wooden boxes on desks, shelves, and cabinets while exploring. When you are close enough, stealable containers sometimes appear as bag icons on your minimap, which makes them easier to spot. However, not every container holds a Key. You will pull out a Well-Aged Cheese just as often, so treat each steal as a gamble rather than a guaranteed find.

Two confirmed early steal locations for Keys are:

  • Church of Hernand — Enter the church, turn right down the corridor, and look on top of a cabinet to your right.
  • Oakenshield Manor, Hernand — Enter through the main doors, go right into the room with the staircase, and check the cabinet straight ahead.

Crime level and consequences: Stealing triggers a red detection circle around you. Stay out of sight or leave the area for around 20 seconds to let it clear. Repeated criminal acts lower your regional reputation and can lead to guards becoming hostile or bounties being placed on you. So be thoughtful about when and where you steal, particularly in busy settlements like Hernand.

How to Open Locked Doors in Crimson Desert

Opening a locked door is simple in theory. Walk up to it with a Key in your inventory and the game opens it automatically. However, the execution has a frustrating catch.

There is no visual difference between a locked door and an unlocked one. You will not know a door is locked until you actually walk into it, at which point the game silently consumes a Key from your inventory with no confirmation prompt. Many players lose multiple Keys this way on unimportant sheds, storerooms, and back doors before they even realise what happened.

The Lantern Trick: A widely used community workaround is to equip and hold your Lantern while approaching any door you are unsure about. Many players confirm this prevents the game from automatically consuming a Key, giving you a chance to decide whether the door is worth opening. It is currently the best known method for avoiding accidental Key loss.

When a door requires something other than a standard Key, it will display a message such as “This door cannot be opened with a normal key,” so you will always know when a specific or quest-related Key is needed instead.

Prison Keys: Opening Jail Cells

Prison Keys work separately from standard Keys and unlock makeshift wooden jail cells found in guard stations and camps, such as those at the Hernand Constabulary west of town, the Dueling Area, and similar locations across regions including Calphade, Varnia, and Delesyia. Opening these cells typically frees Pailunese Refugees.

You can purchase Prison Keys from the Back Alley Shop for 26 Copper Coins each, and you can also loot them from Bandits. As with enemy loot generally, grab them quickly before bodies despawn.

Alternative Ways to Enter Locked Buildings

If you are running low on Keys, climbing through windows is the most accessible and reliable alternative for entering many buildings throughout the early game. Further into Crimson Desert, two additional options become available:

  • Tech Gloves, obtained through a faction quest in Delesyia, eventually let you bypass certain doors entirely without using a Key.
  • Axiom Force and creative physics interactions can also help you access locked areas in ways the game does not explicitly spell out, though windows remain the most practical early-game method.

Keys are not required to complete the main story. However, they unlock access to valuable loot, Crafting Books that teach new recipes, and certain quest-related areas. If you enjoy thorough exploration, keeping a healthy stock of Keys in your inventory is well worth the Copper investment. Just remember to hold your Lantern before testing any unfamiliar door.

That covers everything confirmed about getting Keys and opening locked doors in Crimson Desert. Grab your Mask and a stack of Keys from Grimrak’s Back Alley Shop as soon as you hit Hernand, keep your Lantern handy near suspicious doors, and complete the Jeffrey bounty early for a free Mask and some extra Silver on the side.
