Police warned the public not to approach him.
Authorities confirmed Ballout is known to Berlin’s Islamist scene and has a history of radicalisation and prior criminal offences.
According to media reports from Bild, Der Spiegel, and other outlets citing investigative sources, Ballout is believed to support Islamic State (IS/ISIS), allegedly travelled to the Middle East the previous year in a failed attempt to join the organisation, and was reportedly convicted around May for preparing a serious act of subversive violence. He received a suspended sentence of one year and ten months, despite prosecutors objecting to the suspended sentence. German authorities have confirmed his Islamist associations and previous conviction, while noting that further official confirmation regarding all reported IS-related details remains pending.

Official Reaction: German Leaders Condemn the Attack
Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner visited the scene and described the incident as “an attack on our free and cosmopolitan/open society” and “our way of life,” following what had been a peaceful and colourful Pride celebration. He praised emergency responders and organisers, announced flags would fly at half-mast and confirmed plans for a memorial service beginning at St. Mary’s Church before continuing near the Brandenburg Gate.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the “horrific” and “abhorrent” attack, pledging that authorities would fully investigate the case alongside Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt.
