After years of anticipation, BTS has chosen a setting that carries weight far beyond a stage. The group is preparing to signal its long-awaited full-group comeback through a large-scale cultural project centered around Seoulโs Gwanghwamun area. This moment does not arrive quietly. It unfolds at the heart of Koreaโs historical landscape, where music, heritage, and national identity intersect.
For you as a fan or observer, this project reads as more than a comeback announcement. It feels like a statement of intent.
In This Post:
Why Gwanghwamun is Historical to BTSโs Comeback
Gwanghwamun stands as a symbolic gateway to Korean history. It connects Gyeongbokgung Palace, Sungnyemun, and Gwanghwamun Square, spaces that represent continuity, resilience, and national memory. By choosing this location, BTS ties its return to a broader cultural narrative rather than a conventional performance venue.
HYBE submitted official requests to the Korea Heritage Service and the Seoul Metropolitan Government to film and stage events in these areas. Authorities conditionally approved the applications, with further review planned to ensure cultural preservation and public safety.
This choice signals intention. BTS positions its return as something rooted, deliberate, and reflective of where the group began.
What the Gwanghwamun Project Includes
The project involves multiple elements designed to unfold across several days rather than a single reveal.
BTS plans to film pre-recorded comeback content at Gyeongbokgung Palace and nearby heritage sites on days when public access remains closed. The proposal also outlines nighttime media faรงade events, using LED projections along the walls of Gwanghwamun and Sungnyemun.
These visuals aim to act as a signal flare rather than a full reveal. They mark presence before performance.
A Comeback Date That Carries Weight
BTS is scheduled to return on March 20 with its fifth full-length album, ARIRANG. This release marks the groupโs first full-group album in nearly three years and nine months, following the 2022 anthology Proof and the period shaped by military service.
The album title reflects cultural depth. โArirangโ holds a long history in Korean folk tradition, often associated with endurance, longing, and collective memory. Choosing this title reinforces the larger theme behind the comeback. BTS does not simply return as performers. They return as storytellers grounded in origin.
Plans for a Landmark Performance at Gwanghwamun Square
Alongside filming and media installations, HYBE has applied to hold a large-scale performance at Gwanghwamun Square. The proposed dates include March 20 and the following weekend, March 21 and 22.
If approved, this event would mark the first time a single artist or group holds a standalone concert at Gwanghwamun Square. The venue has hosted major cultural gatherings before, but never a solo K-pop concert of this scale.
Officials estimate attendance could reach 18,000 people at Gwanghwamun Square, with a separate event for up to 30,000 attendees proposed at Seoul Plaza.
A Global Broadcast With Cultural Purpose
HYBE stated that the event would stream live through a global OTT platform, potentially reaching viewers in 190 countries. Internal projections estimate exposure to hundreds of millions of subscribers, with tens of millions expected to watch in real time.
The agency framed the broadcast not only as entertainment but as cultural outreach. By showcasing Korean heritage sites through a global performance, the project aims to introduce history, architecture, and tradition to audiences worldwide.
For ARMY watching from afar, the experience would extend beyond music. It would offer context.
Safety, Logistics, and Final Approval
City officials continue to review safety and traffic management plans before granting final approval. Authorities remain focused on crowd control, emergency access, and infrastructure protection, drawing from past large-scale gatherings held in the same area.
A final decision is expected within days. Once confirmed, the project will move from proposal to preparation at speed.
