Changing your Digimon’s personality in Digimon Story: Time Stranger is an important part of optimizing your team. Each personality type provides unique stat bonuses and influences which Digivolutions your Digimon can access. Whether you want to boost Attack, Defense, or Speed, knowing how to adjust personality traits is key to creating your ideal lineup.

This guide explains every method to switch personality, the benefits of doing so, and how to aim for the personality you want—without wasting time or resources.

How to Change Personality in Time Stranger

There are three main ways to change a Digimon’s personality: talking to them directly, chatting over Digiline, or training them at the Digifarm.

1. Talk to Your Digimon on the Field

When exploring areas, you’ll occasionally see a speech bubble above a Digimon’s head. Interacting with them triggers a short conversation that slightly shifts their personality, depending on your dialogue choice.

  • Each response affects personality direction on a four-quadrant chart (Courage, Friendship, Love, Intelligence).
  • Picking certain replies nudges your Digimon’s personality toward different stat archetypes.
  • The effect is gradual—you may need several conversations to reach a new personality type.

Tip: If you’re unsure which option moves the personality where you want, open the Personality Chart (Triangle on PS5) before confirming your response. The interface shows a small plus sign that marks the personality’s current direction.

Personality Direction Guide

  • Courage: Moves diagonally up-right (Attack/Defense focused)
  • Friendship: Moves diagonally down-right (Support and Bond boosts)
  • Love: Moves diagonally up-left (Healing and Spirit boosts)
  • Intelligence: Moves diagonally down-left (Magic and SP growth)

If you don’t see the symbol for the direction you want, choose the neutral dialogue option so your personality doesn’t change at all.

2. Chat with Reserve Members via Digiline

Sometimes, Digimon who are not currently active in your battle team will send messages through Digiline. Responding to these messages works the same way as field conversations: the reply you pick can alter their personality.

While this method is slower and less predictable than Digifarm training, it’s a great way to build Bond and personality simultaneously, especially for Digimon you’re not using in your active team.

Pro Tip: You can save before replying to a Digiline message. If your response doesn’t shift personality in the desired direction, reload and wait for a different message to appear.

3. Train Digimon at the Digifarm

The Digifarm is the most reliable and consistent way to switch personality types. Each Training Set in the farm is tied to a specific personality and stat bonus. For example, some training types promote Daring (Attack) personalities, while others favor Calm or Devoted ones.

  • Training happens passively, so it won’t interrupt your progress in the main story.
  • You can queue multiple Digimon to train simultaneously.
  • Each session boosts certain stats while slowly steering personality toward that focus.

To access the Digifarm, you must first unlock it through the main story by visiting the In-Between Theatre and speaking with the receptionist. After that, you’ll be able to check your Digifarm anytime to train, feed, and monitor your Digimon’s progress.

Benefits of Changing Personality

Switching personality isn’t just cosmetic—it directly affects stat growth, Digivolution options, and synergy with Agent Skills.

1. Boosts Specific Stats for Digivolution

Each personality enhances growth in one or more stats. For example:

  • Daring boosts Attack and Defense, making it easier to reach Digivolution requirements for offensive forms like BlackAgumon.
  • Calm focuses on Spirit, aiding magic-oriented evolutions.
  • Devoted emphasizes HP and Defense, ideal for tank Digimon.

By aligning a Digimon’s personality with your desired evolution path, you’ll reduce grinding time and reach higher-level forms more efficiently.

2. Enables De-Digivolution to Lower Forms

Certain De-Digivolution routes require the current Digimon’s personality to match that of its previous stage. Adjusting personality before reverting ensures the form is available and prevents errors when trying to return to earlier evolutions like Koromon or Agumon.

3. Unlocks Stat Buffs from Agent Skills

Some Agent Skills correspond to specific personality types under four categories:

  • Bonds of Valor
  • Philanthropy
  • Amicability
  • Wisdom

Unlocking these with Anomaly Points enhances Digimon stats of matching personality types. For example, boosting Bonds of Valor increases Attack for Courage-type Digimon.

Important: Once you spend Anomaly Points, Agent Skills can’t be reset. Choose upgrades carefully so they match your Digimon’s preferred personalities.

Tips for Getting the Personality You Want

  • Save before interacting: If a Digimon’s dialogue bubble appears, save the game first in case your answer doesn’t move the personality correctly.
  • Alternate dialogue directions: Personalities move on a circular chart—sometimes you must “zigzag” through neighboring types instead of jumping straight across.
  • Don’t rush evolution: After Digivolving, a Digimon may automatically take on the default personality for that form the first time you evolve into it. Re-train afterward if you want a custom personality.
  • Feed and talk frequently: Personality shifts more quickly when Bond is high. Use snacks and interactions to keep morale up.
