Crafting a legendary Orc weapon does not come cheap in Gothic 1 Remake. Before Tarrok will forge the Ulu Mulu for you, the game demands proof that you can take down some of its toughest creatures. Here is everything confirmed about gathering each material, where to find the right monsters, and what to expect once you hand everything over.
What Is the Ulu Mulu and Why Do You Need It
The Ulu Mulu is a Staff-type melee weapon obtained through The Banner of Banners, a mandatory story quest in Chapter 4. It deals 35 Edge damage and requires 25 STR to wield. Beyond being a strong weapon in its own right, the Ulu Mulu also doubles as the Orc Banner, the item that grants you access to the Orc Enclave and kicks off Chapter 5: The Custodians of the Portal.
To craft it, you need to track down Tarrok, an Orc held prisoner deep inside the Free Mine, south of New Camp. However, before you reach him, you will need to collect four specific monster materials first.
The Four Materials You Need
Here is a quick breakdown of what you are hunting for:
| Material | Creature | General Location |
|---|---|---|
| Tongue of a Fire Lizard | Great Fire Lizard | Northern Orc Territory / near Xardas’s Tower |
| Horn of a Great Shadowbeast | Great Shadowbeast | Cave near the Stone Circle / between Old Camp and Swamp Camp |
| Teeth of a Swampshark Mother | Swampshark Mother | South of Swamp Camp, in the water |
| Tusks of a Troll | Great Troll | Troll Canyon |
Important note: these creatures only appear once you have actually picked up the requirement from the quest giver. Even if you defeated a regular Shadowbeast or Troll earlier in the game, those old kills will not count toward this quest. Special “Great” versions spawn specifically for this task, often in the same general areas you previously fought their weaker counterparts.
You will also need to have learned the appropriate Hunting Skills before taking these creatures down. Skipping this step can risk a soft lock, since you may not be able to loot the required material from the corpse without it.
Tongue of a Fire Lizard
The Great Fire Lizard can be found in the northern Orc Territory, often near the desert zones or as you descend toward the water below Xardas’s Tower. You can tell it apart from a regular Fire Lizard thanks to its white skin and a noticeably stronger fire-breathing attack.

This fight rewards patience. The lizard’s main threat is a continuous fire-breath attack that tracks your position, so the safest approach is to retreat until the breath ends, then close in for a quick strike. Once it falls, loot the Prime Tongue of Fire (also referred to as the Tongue of a Fire Lizard) from its body.
Horn of a Great Shadowbeast
You can find the Great Shadowbeast in a cave southwest of the Stone Circle landmark, the same spot tied to an earlier Focus Stone quest. The cave itself is dark and fairly spacious, so be ready for a tough encounter the moment you step inside.

This creature hits hard, with swipe and bite attacks plus a fast charging move that can catch you off guard. A few tips make this fight more manageable:
- Enter at full health before engaging, since the Shadowbeast can deal heavy damage quickly.
- Use a Summon Golem Scroll if you have one, letting the Golem distract or tank hits while you chip away at the beast.
- Magic users can try the Shrink Monster spell, which can shift the fight significantly in your favor if it lands.
Defeating it nets 1,000 experience, and you will also find an Amulet of Life in the same cave, which grants 100 HP when worn. Make sure to loot the Horn of a Great Shadowbeast before moving on.
Teeth of a Swampshark Mother
The Swampshark Mother swims south of the Swamp Camp, often alongside regular Swampsharks. Its location can shift since it moves through the water, but it stands out thanks to its lighter skin tone and noticeably higher health and damage compared to standard Swampsharks.

The good news is that the fight itself is not too different from facing a normal Swampshark. Dodging its head during lunging bite attacks is usually enough to avoid serious damage, and a melee weapon can be used to block its attacks and create openings for retaliation. Defeating it grants 1,000 experience, after which you can loot the Teeth of a Swampshark Mother.
There is also a secluded hut nearby where you can meet an NPC named Shrat, who hands over a book called Beasts of Khorinis IV. This advances a separate sidequest involving Cavalorn, so it is worth the short detour while you are in the area.
Tusks of a Troll
The Great Troll spawns in Troll Canyon, the same location where you previously retrieved a Focus Stone during an earlier chapter. From Old Camp, simply follow the path north until you reach the ruins.
This encounter mirrors earlier Troll fights, with a few key attacks to watch for:
- Double arm swipe attacks
- Double arm slam attacks
- Boulder tosses from a distance
The recommended strategy is to roll backward to dodge, then close in for a quick strike once the Troll’s attack finishes. Defeating it rewards 2,000 experience. However, it is worth saving your game before this fight, since some players have reported issues with not being able to loot the Troll, or not receiving the Tusk at all if the correct Hunting Skill has not been learned yet.
A Quick Word on Respawns
Some players initially worried that killing every creature on the map before reaching this quest would leave them stuck without targets. According to community reports, this is not the case. The special “Great” versions of these creatures spawn fresh once the quest requirements are active, generally in the same locations tied to earlier story moments, even if you had already cleared out regular versions of these monsters beforehand.
Finding Tarrok and Crafting the Ulu Mulu
Once you have all four materials, head to the Free Mine, located south of New Camp. Here is the general path to reach Tarrok:
- Speak with Wolf near the Free Mine entrance if you want to start the optional Minecrawler Armor quest along the way.
- Deal with Jackal and his guards blocking the entrance, then use the key from Gorn to open the mine gates.
- Clear through groups of Old Camp guards as you make your way down through the mine’s shaft and ladders.
- Reach the lowest level, then follow the path to find Tarrok inside a cell in the forge room.
Unlock his cell and speak with him. If you are carrying all four required materials, Tarrok will begin forging the Ulu Mulu on the spot. Once the short crafting animation finishes, he challenges you to a duel using the newly forged weapon, wielding wide sweeping attacks that you cannot avoid by simply walking away from the fight. Melee users can stay close and parry or retaliate, while ranged and magic users are better off keeping distance and striking from range.
Defeating Tarrok and looting his body completes The Banner of Banners quest and finally hands you the Ulu Mulu.
