What Is Fortnite Save the World?
Fortnite Save the World is the original Fortnite game mode, released in 2017 before the Battle Royale mode launched and took over. Rather than PvP combat, it is a co-op PvE survival experience where you and your teammates hold back waves of monsters known as Husks, explore a destructible open world, build forts, craft weapons, gather loot, and level up your characters and gear. When Does It Go Free and What Happens to the Paid Version?
Fortnite Save the World officially becomes free-to-play on April 16, 2026. Epic Games stopped selling the paid version on March 11, 2026 at 8PM ET, so new players can no longer purchase it in its current paid form. However, every existing player retains full access to the mode without any changes to their progress, items, or Founder status. This marks the first time Save the World has ever come to a Nintendo console, as the original Switch never received the mode.
Rewards for Existing Players on April 16
As a thank you to players who paid to play Save the World over the years, Epic Games will gift the following items on April 16, 2026:
- 1x Hero Supercharger (promotes a Hero beyond Level 50)
- 1x Weapon Supercharger (promotes a Weapon beyond Level 50)
- Recruitment Voucher
- Research Voucher
- 10,000 Gold
On top of that, Save the World Founders (those who purchased the mode at any point) will continue earning V-Bucks through Daily Quests, Mission Alerts, Storm Shield Defense Missions, and existing challenges. The free-to-play shift does not remove that benefit for paying players.
Pre-Registration Community Goal and Rewards
Epic Games opened pre-registration for the free-to-play launch, and every registration contributes toward a community milestone goal. Each milestone that the community reaches unlocks a free in-game reward for all registered players:

The Snowstrike Hero is a Save the World-specific reward with the North Star perk, which causes Throwing Stars to slow enemies for 4 seconds instead of dealing direct damage. Why Is This Happening Now?
Fortnite Save the World originally launched in early access in 2017 at a price of $39.99. Epic reduced that over the years, most recently selling it as part of a $19.99 bundle that included V-Bucks. As of March 11, 2026 at 8PM ET, the paid version was pulled entirely ahead of the free relaunch.
The timing is notable. Epic announced this news just one day after confirming a V-Bucks price increase set to take effect on March 19, 2026, when the next Fortnite season begins. The Epic Rewards program will give players 20 percent back on V-Bucks purchases, with that credit usable in Fortnite, other Epic Games titles, or on the Epic Games Store. V-Bucks gift cards already purchased retain their original value. Similarly, Show-Bucks, the currency for Fall Guys, will also receive a price increase starting April 8, 2026.
