The Poppy Field sits early in STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl, yet the area’s strange pull and constant drowsiness mislead many players who try to reach the Root Cellar. The surroundings look calm from a distance, but the field keeps every visitor fighting off sleep as if the flowers tug at their thoughts. Because of that, the simple request from Mityay in Zalissya can turn into a confusing loop of blackouts, resets, and lost bearings.
This guide keeps things grounded, practical, and easy to follow. Once you know how to approach the field and where the Root Cellar rests, the entire sequence feels far more deliberate than chaotic.
How the Quest Begins?

You receive the Poppy Field assignment the moment you speak with Mityay near Hamster’s Shop in Zalissya. He mentions an Orthodox icon hidden in an old Root Cellar on the edge of the field. His story hints that the place steals alertness from anyone who enters, so energy drinks become essential rather than optional.
After receiving the assignment, visit Pomor in the wooden hut by teleporting to the location of the mission. However, he will demand a hefty fee & a dangerous job from you. You do not need Pomor’s help to reach the cellar. You can avoid both his fee and his task entirely if you follow the route below.

Before leaving the village, stock up. Vendors in Zalissya sell enough drinks to make the trip safe, and a few extra bottles can spare you from an unexpected blackout.
How the Poppy Field Works?
The moment you step into the sea of red flowers, your vision starts to blur. The world grows heavy, your eyelids burn, and your footsteps slow. You can fight the effect with energy drinks, but running around without direction drains your supplies. Navigating with intention becomes the key.
Two buildings stand in the field and serve as natural landmarks. Each contains energy drinks you can grab if you need help crossing the distance. Treat the buildings as stepping stones rather than destinations.
Where the Root Cellar Actually Is
The Root Cellar lies on the western edge of the Poppy Field. This part of the field sits away from the houses, barn, and central paths, which makes it feel isolated and easy to miss. The entrance blends into the earth, and the poppies hide it until you are nearly on top of it.

Here is the simplest, most consistent route:
- Enter the field and run toward the barn and nearby house in the center.
- Catch your breath inside if needed and drink an energy drink before the next sprint.
- Step outside and align yourself so both buildings sit behind you.
- Run straight west, keeping a light angle along the field’s edge until the poppies thin.
- Watch the ground closely. The Root Cellar appears as a wooden hatch built into the soil.

Once you drop inside, the air clears immediately. The icon rests on a simple shelf, waiting to be taken.
What to Do After Finding the Icon?
Once you have the icon, the story branches. STALKER titles often reward curiosity, and this quest fits that pattern.
Your three options:
1. Return the Icon to Mityay
You receive a pouch of Coupons and the satisfaction of completing the request as asked. Mityay later places the icon on his family grave, which creates a small but meaningful detail in Zalissya.
2. Trade the Icon to Pomor
Pomor hands over an early-game AR416. The rifle hits hard, and many players enjoy using it, though its low durability forces repairs.
3. Trade the Icon to Pomor, then Kill Him, then Return the Icon to Mityay
You walk away with the rifle, the Coupons, and the chance to loot Pomor’s room after taking his key. This route does not break later quests or cause meaningful consequences.
The decision rests on your own approach to the Zone. Some players seek clean solutions. Others prefer to sweep the board.
